Tour of California stage 2

Tour of California

Stage 2: Ventura - Santa Barbara 147.5 km

Welcome to the first “real stage” of Tour of California 2018, we start in Ventura, a city located on the Pacific coast. The original town grew up around a Spanish Franciscans mission founded in 1782.

The route starts south along the coast and then into the hills and back north before finishing in Santa Barbara about 50 km northwest of where it began. Santa Barbara is another coastal city, originally founded in 1782 by Spanish soldiers and missionaries building a presidio (fortified base).

The route is classified as flat, but taking a look at the bookmaker favorites shows that it may be more puncher friendly or at least favor a hilly sprinter. The pure sprinters may suffer on this undulated course especially if the pace gets too hot. Let’s see can’t always trust these bookmaker predictions.

With some clouds and wind speed at 45 km/hour this morning, even more challenging conditions today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/1.jpg

Very early attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza, they quickly build a lead of more than a minute.

Behind more attacks from the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Politt and further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van Hooydonck

Landa might be just a bit too strong this early in the race, at least now the peloton speed up significantly.

It ends up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman forming the morning breakaway, everyone else reeled in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman best placed in GC at 43”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas on paper the strongest on a route like this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas attacks for the KoM from about 1 km, that was too early a patient pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza takes his wheel and win the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/3.jpg

Next the intermediate sprint, it turns out to the a very close thriller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas fastest in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman

The peloton at 6’22” with 92 km left.

From here the peloton starts chasing harder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Restrepo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Fenn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petelin leading the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/4.jpg

On the next climb we see a similar situation as last time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas with an early attack trying to shake of the others, but again it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza reaping the harvest.

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza 12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas 6

Then on the descent, we get the expected disatster, with windspeeds at 47 km/hour and the high downhill pace the peloton breaks. 92 riders lose contack.
Can’t mention everyone but the camere have spottet: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Bonnin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Jang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Paulus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Rabottini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Van den Broeck

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/5.jpg

3rd KoM and this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas seems to have learned the lesson waiting in third position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman opens the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas played his cards right this time, taking the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza 16
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas 12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman8

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Gillett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Crncevic working the most in the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas takes the intermediate sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza

25 km to go, peloton at 2’11”, gruppetto at 5’39” a devastating blow to anyone in that group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/6.jpg

The pace is very hard in the peloton and even though the windspeed is now down at 35 km/hour more and more riders fall of the back, youth leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Goldstein and climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Signorini the latest victimes.

The last KoM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas forgot all about wheelsucking and attacks from 1.4 km, but this time he hold out, taking the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza, the latter though get the overnight lead.

Virtual and overnight KoM result:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza 20
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas 18
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman10

16.6 km left, peloton at 1’51”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas have attacked from the breakaway, first under the 10 km banner with 1’15” to the peloton.

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Gillett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Stüssi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Salinas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Dunne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod working in the peloton.

5 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas now alone in front of the bunch, he got 52”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/8.jpg

2 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas in front with 37”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Grieg – Eftel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Porto – Prio with a long pace line, but then suddently the left side of the road, four riders starts an early sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and further left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/9.jpg

Four more riders start sprinting opening a gap to the peloton in the left side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Lobato del Valle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche.

At the right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Thwaites also with some distance to the larger group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas just 10” in front now, with 1.5 km left unlikely he will make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/10.jpg

First under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden very close at his left rear. 1-2 meters behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni and another 2-3 meters back at the far left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Lobato del Valle

Then in this ordre:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche.

2-3 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Thwaites almost side by side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/11.jpg

600 meters left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh in front, still close pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden but seems like if he is no longer sprinting, did he blow up?

Further back a fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Lobato del Valle have passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni, he looks strong, behind Bouhanni also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz closing in fast.

Further back the peloton have almost caught up, actually anybody’s guess which one of all these riders who might end up in top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/12.jpg

Meanwhile the peloton have broken again and it is possiable that many more rider are about to lose time amongst them race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Malori, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Chernetskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Meintjes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh wins in Santa Barbara, he is measured as 13” in front of the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/13.jpg

Although it does not look like that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Lobato del Valle 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kangert both out of nowhere for 5th and 6th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/15.jpg

Is incredible close in the next group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Gallopin round of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S2/16.jpg

This was Peter Kennaugh first stage win in Tour of California, his best previous result was (as far is my research goes) 4th on stage 4 in 2016.

With Malori losing time Matthias Brändle takes the race lead.

Adrian Malori and Peter Kennaugh shares the point lead, and Christopher De Souza took the first KoM lead. With Goldstein also losing time today, Silvio Herklotz now leads the youth classification.
