Stage 6 - Montauban > Rodez The only hilly stage here and as said in the preview, it may not look too decisive for the GC fight. There's obviously some opportunities to attack each other though and some GC contenders may already try to attack prior to tomorrow's final mountain stage..

Sepulveda, Kiserlovski, König, Pinot as (slightly) better puncheurs than Brajkovic, who needs to be attentive today.. Edmondson, Hoelgaard or Lopez as the best non-GC focussed puncheurs and maybe looking at a stage win here..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_001.jpg

A group of 7 riders went clear early into this long stage and it's indeed an interesting group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Abreu (24th GC + 7.48)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Haavardsholm
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Bauer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson (2nd KoM with 23pts)

Abreu as clearly the best placed rider in the GC and Edmondson as the best puncheur in the field, joining the early break! Apparently, he's aiming for the KoM-lead today, as there will be four mountain sprints later into the stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_002.jpg

50km into the stage (180km to go), the situation changes significally though:

As soon as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov (19th GC + 6.51) bridged across the leading group, the peloton would start to chase again - apparently not willing to let Pomoshnikov join a breakaway group here! That's tough news for particularly Edmondson, as the group hasn't even reached the first climbs/mountain sprints yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_003.jpg

Soon after the first breakaway group got caught, a group with 9 riders goes clear for a second break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Bauer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Haavardsholm
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Daspuntsag
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Joeaar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Ebsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Godoy (54th GC + 18.08)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Quintana (37th GC + 9.58)

No real threat for neither the GC nor KoM-leader Moyano and the group is allowed to establish a 2'40" gap quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_004.jpg

Bauer took the first Cat4 climb ahead of Haavardsholm.. but what's happening then?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov does it again! The climber once again jumps away from the pack to bridge across the breakaway group.. and, yet again, the peloton pulls him (and the leading group) back quickly. That's prior to the second mountain sprint of the day, with still more than 110km to go..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_005.jpg

..and so while Pomoshnikov destroyed his initial plan, he kinda helped to revive his KoM ambitiouns by pulling back the second breakaway group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson can be happy eventually, as he took the Cat3 climb ahead of Rojas Villegas and Moyano..
..as well as the Cat2 climb ahead of Hughes and some random domestique!

Provisional KoM Edmondson 39, Moyano 29, Rojas Villegas 22, Pinot 20

No more attacks or breakaway attempts until the final 35km of the stage though.. the race settles down for quite a while..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_006.jpg

Lehtinen would then initiate a wave of attacks from 35km outside the finish and eventually, a group of 10 riders goes clear from the peloton with now 20.5km remaining:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Gonzalez Cortes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Manfred
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold (16th GC + 6.32)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Alizadeh (34th GC + 9.37)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Schurter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hughes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Lehtinen (26th GC + 8.09)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ikibe (30th GC + 9.14)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Heider

Aasvold as the most dangerous rider for the GC, even though he's clearly behind Brajkovic and also two minutes off the GC's Top-10..

..and so Swisslion and the other teams allow those ten riders to establish a 1'35" gap for now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_007.jpg

The gap remains at 1'14" with now just 11km to go and the penultimate ascent before a short uphill finish:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hughes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Manfred
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Alizadeh attack the leading group and open up a gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_008.jpg

The peloton with Brajkovic at the very front does just enough to keep the gap at a somewhat "okay" level: 1'40" at this point, where the action kicked off in the leading group. Brajkovic has no pressure here with the leading group(s) not featuring any serious threat for his GC ambitiouns..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_009.jpg

..and so it's pretty clear, that stage will go to one of those five riders in the new leading group: 1.5km to go and it's Alizadeh ahead of Aasvold, Hughes, Bugge and a struggling Manfred..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_010.jpg

Alizadeh kicks off the sprint from the leading position, Aasvold, Hughes and Bugge not far behind.. Manfred is done!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_011.jpg

No one can't counter his sprint and so it's still Alizadeh ahead of Aasvold... Bugge tries to go past Hughes at least..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Alizadeh takes the stage ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold! A nice stage-win, of course, and he did well to position himself at the front of the group, when it counted. Congratulations!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hughes held off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge til the end, completing the podium that way!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_013.jpg

+ 24" pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Manfred

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_6_014.jpg

+ 57" pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Lehtinen as the last remaining attacker to finihs ahead of the pack..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Atapuma wins the sprint from the peloton ahead of Pinot, Keough and Kiserlovski - they finish with the same time as Lehtinen and did gain back some seconds on the winning group eventually..

..and so Brajkovic enters the final stage with still the same gap on Kiserlovski (1.50), Sepulveda (2.40) and Pinot (3.03) - they all need to attack tomorrow!

BNZ Cycling with a great stage today: Edmondson takes the KoM-lead and Aasvold moves up from 16th to 13th in the GC.
