Stage 4 - Bourdeaux > Pauillac The peloton travelled to Bourdeaux, where another key stage will depart: the 51km timetrial will obviously be a difference maker between strong/solid and weak timetrialers - some GC contenders clearly need to somehow limit the losses today:
Pinot the new race leader, but just like Atapuma (3rd) he's significally weaker in TTs than Brajkovic (2nd) and also Kiserlovski (4th). Brajkovic will surely aim for yellow today, as another solid TT rider like Sepulveda (7th) is more than two minutes behind in the current GC. König (19th) as another GC contender with solid skills against the clock and he needs to bounce back from a disappointing first mountain stage..
With some many (flat) timetrial kilometres on the menu today, we should expect the TT specialists to fight for the stage though: Mottin, Olman, Reus/Kovalev/Martin, Sterobo, Johansson and Downey as the most promising riders. A few more possible contenders, as always we may see some surprises after all!
Several TT specialists with an early start thanks to yesterday's mountaintop finish: Johansson, Kovalev and Mottin (picture above) as the first three serious stage contenders!
Huge differences at the two first sectors already, as Mottin is 44 seconds faster than Johansson with still 11km to go!
Olman, however, is another 40 seconds ahead at the second split and we would crush the best times at the finish so far:
1h05'41" for Olman..
Mottin + 1'01"
Burke + 1'40"
Johansson + 2'06"
Kovalev + 2'12"
Laizer also a minute behind Olman at the second split:
+ 1'29" as provisional 3rd at the finish!
Hacecký with the second best split times, half a minute slower than Olman though:
+ 57" at the finish as 2nd ahead of Mottin!
Christian + 1'59"
Pökälä + 2'00" (both finish narrowly ahead of Johansson)
Downey + 2'25"
Kreuziger + 4'18"
Martin as the next TT specialist then.. he does quite well as 2nd at the final split, but still 30 seconds behind Olman:
+ 48" as provisional 2nd at the finish!
Kireva + 2'29"
Reus as the next option for Swisslion and he's just 12 seconds behind Olman at the final split:
+ 41" at the finish though, losing some further seconds eventually!
Craddock + 2'07"
With only the Top-50 riders to come, Olman definitely had a huge best time here, with no one coming really close so far..
Sterobo (GC 45th) as probably the last serious opponent (if we count just the best TT specialists), but he's also a minute down at the final split:
+ 1'40" at the finish as a somewhat solid 7th so far..
Kasa + 1'55" as provisional 9th
Zoidl + 2'23"
Roe + 2'25"
Claerebout + 2'25"
Cataldo + 5'05"
König (GC 19th + 4.22) with a key stage today, since he lost quite some minutes on Pinot already and he simply as to play his TT skills to perfection now. He's a solid 12th at the final split, more than a minute behind Olman:
+ 1'48" as 9th at the finish! That looks like a good time indeed, as he finishes not much slower than Sterobo and Burke..
And now for a quick overview of the GC's Top-15, where we have several climbers, who really don't handle TTs too well:
GC
15 | Pomoshnikov + 5'32"
14 | Ahmad Zamri + 2'10" and a chance to move up in the GC
13 | Anguilet + 5'34"
12 | Ratiy + 2'33" and clearly behind König that way
GC
11 | Costagli + 3'10" for a somewhat solid result
10 | Campero + 3'31"
09 | Warbasse + 3'32" rather disappointing, he spent much energy yesterday though
08 | Hoem + 5'01" as one of the slowest Top-15 riders so far
GC
07 | Sepulveda easily went past Hoem with still 14km to go and his split times are solid (21st, 22nd with + 1.39 on Olman at the final split then).. he's clearly slower than a strong Köning, but it should be fine enough to gain valuable time on other climbers:
+ 2'15" as 18th at the finish
The next two riders then - with Bardet amongst the worst TT riders of all riders at the start:
GC
06 | Bardet + 7'20" and the expected heavy losses
05 | Hacecký + 4'48"
GC
04 | Kiserlovski as the first GC contender with less than a minute disadvantage on Pinot.. he's two minutes off Olman at the final split and so more than a minute behind König:
+ 3'11" at the finish and something like 1.20 lost on König today!
GC
03 | Atapuma as one of those climbers, who just want to survive the day:
+ 6'03" and the podium is gone for now!
GC
02 | Brajkovic though does not want to defend the podium, he wants to slip into yellow today! He's 14th at the split, not much slower than König and so he's definitely doing well so far:
+ 1'51" as 10th at the finish, just 3 seconds lost on König and more than a minute won on Kiserlovski!
GC
01 | Pinot as the last rider then and the only question is, how far he will drop in the GC:
+ 5'16" on Olman as 62nd at the finish - that's more than 4 minutes lost on Brajkovic!
Olman finally celebrating his commanding victory after spending almost the entire day waiting in the box for someone to beat his time.. no one did, as Reus (41 seconds) and Martin (48) complete the podium with no real shot at the stage win!
As to be expected, Brajkovic takes over the GC lead from Pinot (at 3.03 now), who drops from 1st to 4th today. With a hilly and a tough mountain stage to come, that's doable - but Brajkovic definitely performed on a great level so far!
Kiserlovski (1.50) and Sepulveda (2.40) moving onto the podium for today and also Ahmad Zamri (3.22) as 5th, Ratiy (3.34) as 6th and König (3.57) as 7th can be considered the biggest winners today. Of course those guys had to deliver a good timetrial and actually, someone like Ratiy might have hoped for a better performance on the TT bike today..
Costagli, Warbasse and Atapuma completing the Top-10 ahead of Campero and Hacecký.. Atapuma going from 3rd to 10th with now + 4.24 on Brajkovic, who also defended the points lead (38pts) against Olman (33)!
