Grand Prix du Midi Libre - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_000.png

Stage 2 - Cahors > Toulouse The second stage leads us towards Toulouse, where a quite long day will end in a circuit through the city. A technical parcours, but no climbs and no crosswinds neither. It should be the first chance for the sprinters to fight for line honours:

Vanoverschelde as the best sprinter, though lacking acceleration in comparison to other fast men like Coutinho/Hochman, Korzh, Manan or Bogdanovics.. Hochman and Kluge as those sprinters, who are in striking distance for the GC lead - if they win the stage! Craddock will definitely hope for someone else to take the stage though..

Several riders tried to break clear right from the start, but it's a 3-men-group eventually going clear from the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Matzka (GC + 0.56)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Cancellara (GC + 0.27)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kreuziger (GC + 0.14)

A group with Schlegel, Brozyna, Haavardsholm, Taborre and Appleby desperately fought to join them - but they were not allowed to do so!

Kreuziger with a chance to move up into the virtual GC's Top-10, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Matzka easily takes the only intermediate sprint ahead of Kreuziger and Cancellara..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_002.jpg

The breakaway's lead would peak around 8 minutes, but with Rothaus pulling the strings hard towards the finishing circuit in Toulouse, this gap is down to 1'51" with now 30km remaining. Also ENI-MOL and Campari providing some support for Rothaus, which is the most active team in the pursuit though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_003.jpg

It still took them quite a while to finally catch the trio, but with now just 6km to go, the escapees are finally reeled in..

Rothaus still at the front with ENI-MOL and Campari showing their colors as well..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_004.jpg

2.7km to the finish and the sprint trains have been set up: despite some confused spectators, luckily nothing happens in this corner and so we can look at the picture for the sprint..

Less than 2km to go and the Rothaus train already went into pieces! Vanoverschelde with still Krasnov as his final leadout just ahead of him though..

Berger, Manan, Kluge and Bogdanovics now in those positions behind Hochmann and Coutinho..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_006.jpg

1.2km remaining and Hochmann launches his sprint with Coutinho not able to follow! So it's Hochman probably aiming for the stage and the GC lead as well..

Krasnov in the leading position though, Vanoverschelde lost his wheel for a moment, however!

Drucker finally losing speed.. Berger in between a few Campari helpers.. Kluge and Manan a couple of positions behind.. Keough and Cimolai try to stay in the mix!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_007.jpg

Hochmann now going past Krasnov with some good speed inside the final kilometre!

Lasca appears to be his team's fastest finisher today and he's head-to-head with Vanoverschelde, just ahead of Berger and Coutinho!

Kluge drops back and won't be a threat for Craddock today..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_008.jpg

..opposing to Hochmann, who is still maintaining his leading position ahead of Krasnov with just a few hundred metres left!

Lasca going strong and gaining an advantage over Vanoverschelde.. Berger attempts to go past him now!

Bogdanovics, Keough and Cimolai clearly ahead of Manan..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_009.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Hochmann as the clear stage-winner! Launching his sprint from outside the final kilometre, he was quite impressive to keep his speed until the end. And that's not only a great stage win, but also the GC lead for one day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Krasnov with a nice 2nd place then.. not providing an ideal leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde though, who has to settle for a somewhat solid 4th place and surely a nice team result then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Lasca the biggest surprise as 3rd on the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Berger lost some speed on the final metres and completes the Top-5 ahead of Coutinho, Keough, Bogdanovics, Cimolai and Vinther. Kluge ends up 12th ahead of Craddock, who probably can't believe that this one of only two sprinters with a chance to take the GC lead actually won the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_010.jpg

The fast finish and tricky corners in this circuit through Toulouse would cause some late splits in the peloton:

89 riders finish in the first main group and then a next bigger group:

+ 1'50" for those riders.. no real GC contender involved though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_011.jpg

But then, another big groups tumbles in, losing further time:

+ 2'46" for those riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Medvedev amongst them! He will have to focus on the mountains only, it seems..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/midi/MG18_midi_2_012.jpg

Hochmann taking over the GC lead from Craddock (4 seconds), but the US boy at least retains the points lead thanks to his solid result and three additional points (28pts in total)! Kreuziger as another rider improving in the GC, indeed going up into the Top-10 as 8th now.

Tomorrow's first mountain stage (with the Col du Tourmalet featured as the penultimate climb) should be a killer though, hence we will definitely see a totally different GC then.
