Second consecutive flat stage, as we're heading for a stage from Vancouver through a circuit in Coquitlam and back to Vancouver for the long finishing stretch. Probably the easiest of the three flat stages here, as we don't have too challenging climbs in the circuit. Anyway, there's a speedbump, that has to be raced a few times. The pure sprinters though looked fine on a more challening stage yesterday, so it's another day for the sprint favorites:
Haller coming off a commanding victory with his teammate Kreder also finishing on the podium. Also Vanderbiest and Feiereisen with a clear advantage over the best of the rest yesterday. Will anyone be able to contest those two top sprinters (and teams) today?
Like yesterday, the first couple of breakaway attempts had been shut down quickly:
#1 - Kiflay, Kossouhorou
#2 - Kung, Vlasov, Debesay, Martinez, GarcÃa Cortina, Sanchez Gil
Despite the peloton reaching the first intermediate sprint alltogether, there's no sprinter going for those points this time! Kraftwerk Machine's Schädlich, Denz and Irvine take it instead..
Soon after the sprint, a breakaway group with four riders would go (and stay) clear then:
Rajapakshage (74th in GC + 1.19)
Kung (1st in U25, 23rd in GC + 0.42)
GarcÃa Cortina
Martinez
Kung with a great oportunity to defend his U25 lead through bonifications, the three intermediate sprints see three different winners though:
Martinez takes the first sprint ahead of Garcia/Kung..
GarcÃa Cortina wins the second ahead of Rajapakshage/Martinez..
Kung takes the final sprint ahead of Martinez/Rajapakshage..
..at this point (34.5km before the finish) the peloton is down by two minutes..
Again Kraftwerk, cycleYorkshire and Carrefour as those teams taking care of chasing the breakaway group and after cutting down the gap to 55 seconds with 18km to go, they definitely looked in control of the race again..
.. Kung, however, does not give up, as the escaping group still has a small gap on the pack with now 5km remaining! The U25 leader goes clear from his former breakaway companions with a strong attack.. Kraftwerk Machine now pulling the peloton into the crucial moments of the stage!
Kung with a gutsy move there, but with less than 2.5km to go, he has to realize that there's no chance to hold off the nearing peloton. Quite a lot of sprinters in the mix today, the less wind affected race (and the less challenging profile) obviously would help some riders to keep up with the strongest teams today:
Tvetcov Gough Cullaigh Kreder Rowe Sanikwathi Golovash Ford Tzortzakis Bercz Haller Vingerling Kuboki Vanderbiest Hopman Canelon Paez Sobota Kemboi
Tennant as the first cycleYorkshire leadout to drop back, just like Politt and Schädlich for Kraftwerk..
1.7km to go and it's definitely not going to be such a dominant play by Krafterwerk and Carrefour today:
Gough/Keder/Haller leading the bunch though, with Golovash on the second position right now..
Bercz/Vanderbiest as Carrefour's train now.. Vingerling looking well positioned so far.. just like Rowe, who's still supported by two teammates.. Ford also in the mix yet and Kemboi moves forward now!
Final kilometre and Ford is done.. he loses ground quickly with other riders being significally faster now:
Hopman on the left side, flying past them all to move towards the very front of the bunch, where Bercz/Vanderbiest go past Kreder/Haller now!
Also Rowe now at the front, trying to go past Vanderbiest.. Golovash/Vingerling still there, too. Kemboi, Tzortzakis, Paez, Canelon ahead of a struggling Kuboki..
Speirs is popping up though!
A great leadout by Bercz, who pulled Vanderbiest to the front: it's still Bercz in the leading position now though! Vanderbiest ahead of Haller, who left Kreder's wheel now!
Hopman still in the mix, but not as fast as those other four riders at the front.. Vingerling loses ground quickly.. Rowe right behind Vanderbiest and doing much better than yesterday.. also Kemboi with a good kick! Speirs behind Cullaigh then..
Bercz now struggling and it's time for Vanderbiest to go past his leadout.. Haller though with a small advantage now, aiming to go past Kreder with a few hundred metres to go!
Hopman with a huge fight to keep the pace.. Rowe moved to the middle of the street and Speirs goes after him.. Kemboi in the mix for a Top-5, too.. Vingerling still there and then there's Kuboki making up ground with a pretty fast finish!
Kreder is done (just like Bercz) and now it's a tigh decision between Haller, Vanderbiest and maybe Rowe! Haller with still a small advantage over Vanderbiest, who needs to go for a final big push here..
Kemboi, a strong Speirs, Hopman and also Vingerling still going strong, but Kuboki comes close..
Haller does it again! A narrow victory over Vanderbiest today and so he grows his points lead and adds another stage win in this HC rated, prestigious Tour of Vancouver. A good result for both, but Haller obviously as the superior sprinter so far!
Rowe with a good 3rd place after his disappointing result yesterday..
Kemboi with a narrow 4th ahead of Speirs, who completes the Top-5 ahead of Vingerling, Kuboki, Hopman, Canelon and Sobota! Quite a huge finishing sprint by Speirs, but also Kemboi should be happy enough with such a result here.
Haller's second consecutive victory! Tomorrow's first mountain stage will give Pluchkin a chance to fight back in the points classification, but Haller definitely did his best to stay in contention for the points shirt, that went to climbers in four of the five past editions of the race (Avelino as the only sprinter to win the points classification back in 2015, one stage-win)!
