Vuelta a Colombia
Stage 5: Armenia – Cerra Torro 172.4 km
Welcome to the 5th stage of Vuelta a Colombia, we are back in the Andes for another very brutal mountain stage with summit finish, the last summit finish of the tour.
It is partly clouded, but that will only be a relief after many days in the sun as it does not look like rain and we got little wind.
We get a very strong group of riders forming a breakaway after only 5 km, Carthy (25th), Garby(15th), Ji (12th), Keizer (10th), Orozco , Sarmiento, Valls (14th), Velits (7th)
Behind them also Bostner and Gaimon on the move, but they never make it.
We are still at the flat and after some hard work from Lobato del Valle, Pozdnyakov, Hudecek, Grigrian and Bagot, everything are brought back together.
Not for long though, Keizer accelerates again, behind him also
Carthy (25th), Garby(15th), Orozco, Sarmiento, Valls (14th), Velits (7th) and Shapira
We are about to start the climbing to the first cat.3, might be harder to close down this time.
Orozco struggles to hang on at the climb. Valls attacks and win the KoM in front of Keizer.
Peloton (97 riders) at about two minutes over the top. 145 km left.
On the flat section leading up to the intermediate sprint, the breakaway can’t keep it together, under pressure from a high pace pursuit from the peloton.
Garby, Sarmiento and Valls form the leading group.
At 42” Keizer and Carthy in the poursuivant.
Orozco, Velits and Shapira reeled back in the peloton now at 1’03”.
Nazaret (8th) attack from the peloton.
Nazaret fails.
The peloton very fast on the last few kilometers leading up to the start of the next climb, just about to catch the last three breakaway riders, when with a strong kick Duarte (11th) is flying by, followed by Nazaret with a 2nd attempt.
Aggressive riding from Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff in front of the peloton and 6 riders break free, Scarponi, Dzhus, Pluchkin, Ji, Shikai (9th) and Iino
Shikai attacks and with unreal strength close up to the leading group very fast, just to fly by them and take the KoM.
This is an overview of the situation when the peloton have just passed the top.
Leading Shikai Duarte and Nazaret
At 1’31 Race leader group, 5 riders
At 2’16 Peloton 22 riders
At 3’08 4 riders, with Carthy
At 3’28 12 riders with Novak, Velits and Roglič
At 3’53 19 riders with Gilanipoor
On the downhill the race leader group, gets caught by the peloton and also group Carthy melt with group Velits
But Roglič fall back to group Gilanipoor.
They do not fight for the cat.4 and Duarte takes it. Shikai attacks again on the cat.2, again opening a gap to the breakaway companions.
After that Roglič make a fantastic solo ride, closing all the way up to the favorite group.
Situation is:
Shikai in front.
At 36” Duarte and Nazaret
At 2’19” quite surprisingly Dzhus has attacked with Martinez
At 2’37 Roglič with his new found great legs attacking, at his wheel Maillet
At 2’48 leader group 24 riders
At 4’03 33 riders with Carthy, Velits, and Gilanipoor
Again attack from the race leader group, Manfredi, and a bit later also Senni and De la Cruz accelerates.
On the way up the hard cat.1 climb, Roglič Maillet Manfredi and De la Cruz joins the stage leaders, now 7 riders in front.
Dzhus and Martinez are reeled back into the race leader group. Duarte wins the KoM
The fight for the KoM split the leading group but everyone gets back on the descent except Maillet, may also just mention that Senni is also still out somewhere in between.
On the way up the cat.2, first Úran attacks, then Ndayisenga with leader Kudus break free.
Finally also Denifl attacks Pluchkin quick to response an take his wheel.
Moves like this will of course break the larger group into pieces, those who want to get back on their wheel and those who just can’t keep up.
Up front Duarte takes the KoM, with only Roglič able to stay close.
This is the situation:
Duarte
At 7” Roglič
At 1’02 Manfredi De la Cruz Shikai and Nazaret
At 2’59” Maillet
At 4’31” Senni
At 5’12” Úran
At 5’29” Ndayisenga Kudus Denifl Pluchkin
At 6’04 Monsalve, Henao Valls
At 6’33 Ji, Keizer, Serrano
At 7’51 Garby, Koshevoy, Dzhus, Martinez, Augustyn and Jang
At 9’53 10 riders with Velits, Signorini Carthy
Now a long downhill/flat section, the 6 riders in front joins up again, and also 18 riders form a yellow jersey group (from Senni to Jang in the above list) only Maillet still riding alone.
Duarte takes the cat.4 and at the same time Pluchkin attacks as he see that Dzhus are no longer able to lead fast enough.
Now time to take a look at the situation as the first riders are about to start the final 16 km climb up to the summit finish.
In front the 6 riders.
At 3’34” Maillet
At 4’39” Pluchkin
At 5’55” Denifl, Henao, Úran
At 7’02” Kudus, Monsalve, Valls, Dzhus
At 7’34” Ji, Senni, Augustyn, Ndayisenga
At 7’52” Koshevoy
At 8’08” Jang
At 8’54 Keizer, Serrano, Garby and Martinez
Everyone else at more than 10 minutes.
The next rider to make an interesting move is Duarte launching a solo move with 13 km to the top, slope 13%
Over the next 5 km a few interesting developments, at first De la Cruz and soon also Manfredi drops, leaving 3 riders in direct pursuit of Duarte.
Also group Denifl splits as he attacks attempting to close up to Pluchkin.
A brief look at the times, this time only the first 15 riders:
Duarte in front, 8 km left for him.
At 56” Roglič, Shikai and Nazaret
At 1’53” Manfredi
At 2’06” De la Cruz
At 2’46” Pluchkin
At 4’05” Denifl
At 4’42” Úran
At 6’01 Maillet and Henao
At 6’44 Monsalve and Valls
At 9’02 Kudus
At 9’18 Augustyn
5 km left for Duarte
Nazaret dropped by the high pace of Roglič
Pluchkin fast on the climb have passed De la Cruz and Manfredi, now under two minutes behind the stage leader.
Monsalve and Valls have got contact with Maillet and Henao
2.5 km left for Duarte
Pluchkin now in the 2nd group and also Nazaret rejoined now 4 riders in direct pursuit at 1’06.
Denifl passed De la Cruz, now forming the 3rd group with Manfredi at 2’32
Henao have fallen back a little, now sitting 25” behind a group of Monsalve Valls and Maillet.
Also Kudus losing time over the last few kilometers now behind Augustyn and Martinez.
Duarte first under the red kite having a great last 1.5 km actually increasing the distance to the next group.
Let’s take a final and deep look at the situation before we get to the finish line.
At 1’12” Pluchkin, Shikai and Roglič
At 1’35” Nazaret
At 2’38 Denifl and Manfredi
At 3’12” Úran and De la Cruz
At 6’13” Monsalve and Valls
At 6’33” Maillet
At 6’44” Henao
At 10’17” Augustyn and Martinez
At 10’50” Ji and Kudus
At 11’12 Keizer
At 12’09 Senni
At 12’38 Garby and Ndayisenga
Duarte wins at Cerra Torro, he will surely move up in the GC.
Pluchkin 2nd at 1’15”, Shikai 3rd at 1’45” and Roglič 4th at 1’54”
Nazaret 5th at 2’11 and Denifl 6th at 2’41”
Manfredi 7th at 3’31” Úran 8th at 4’05” and De la Cruz 9th at 4’30
Valls at 6’26” round of top 10 in front of Monsalve at 6’38”
With the stage win Fabio Duarte moved from 11th to 4th in GC, other that gained positions in GC was Rigoberto Úran now 3rd, Chen Shikai, Magno Nazaret and Primoz Roglic.
Aleksandr Pluchkin further extended his race lead over Stefan Denifl, same with his point lead.
With stunning 71 points today, Fabio Duarte took the KoM lead.
