Vuelta a Colombia
Stage 3: Medellin – Tarso 142.2 km
Welcome to the 3rd stage of Vuelta a Colombia, we continue in the mountains today with many shorter but very hard climbs, before another Hors catégorie summit finish.
We saw many riders lose to the time limit yesterday; another short stage today may also be difficult to survive for the sprinters and other weak climbers.
Sunny but winds at 40-45/km hour may influence the race.
3rd in KoM Peterson opens the race, soon also Anderberg, Cherkasov, Jung, Krizek, Nonaka, Owen, Petelin and Pranata attack in smaller groups.
The 9 riders join up with 15 km to the first KoM, but as soon as the slope gets over 4.5%, It is evident that Anderberg may not have the right legs for a challenge like this one.
5.5 km to the KoM, 128.3 km to the finish.
The selection continues as we get closer to the top, Krizek takes the KoM (cat3)
At 36” Cherkasov, Peterson
At 54” Nonaka
At 1’16” Petelin, Owen
At 1’46” Jung
At 1’49” Pranata
At 2’36” Peloton, 136 riders, 122.7 km to the finish.
Peterson join Krizek and wins the category 4. In the peloton O'Connor single handed doing all the work.
Looks like Krizek got his climber legs on the morning, he attacks again and win the next KoM (cat3)
At 28” Peterson
At 1’26” Cherkasov,
At 1’43” Nonaka
At 1’59” Owen
At 2’26” Petelin,
Jung and Pranata now reeled into the Peloton at 2’56”, 128 riders, 95.6 km to the finish.
Peterson rejoins the front at the descent.
Krizek on the move again, winning the first category 2 climb
At 1’10” Peterson
At 2’51” Cherkasov,
At 2’51” Nonaka
At 3’16” the Peloton, 126 riders, 83.2 km to the finish.
In the peloton Gilanipoor accelerates, very rapidly overtaking rider by rider in front of him. Also Martinez on the move, the slopes on these climbs horrible, able to create huge gabs very fast.
Gilanipoor win the 2nd Category 2 climb
At 36” Krizek and Martinez
At 1’27” Peterson
At 3’21” Cherkasov.
At 3’16” the Peloton, 109 riders, 77 km to the finish.
Up front the first four riders team up at the descent, now only Cherkasov between the leading group and the peloton. In the peloton Nitu moves to the front may be a sight that the pursuit will be intensified from here.
As we have seen before in leading group splits on the climb, Gilanipoor win another Category 2 climb.
At 1’21” Martinez
At 2’49” Krizek
At 3’48” ” Peterson
At 7’08” Cherkasov
At 8’20” the Peloton, 97 riders, 52 km to the finish, a long way to go especially considering the brutal climb to come, but those gabs is getting serious.
Padun has moved to the front of the peloton now helping Nitu
Gilanipoor also wins the cat.4 and the intermediate sprint.
This is the situation at the start of the final hors catégorie climb to Tarso.
Gilanipoor alone in front with 18 km to the finish.
At 2’03” Martinez
At 3’42” Krizek
At 5’43” ” Peterson
At 10’00” the Peloton, 89 riders.
With this huge gab it is not only possible that Gilanipoor might win the stage, but also make an impressive move up the GC, he is 46th at 11’44”
As the peloton start the climb everyone in GC top 20 is rather well positioned, all sitting in the better half. Scarponi setting the pace.
With a little more than 13 km left for the peloton, we see the first attack from a GC rider, it is Roglič (14th), his move also provoke that other riders start chasing, Valls, Velits, Duarte, Garby now in front of the peloton.
After 2.5 km Roglič joins teammate Krizek taking a breather at his wheel.
With 9.2 km to the top for Gilanipoor, the situation is.
At 2’18” Martinez
At 5’17” Krizek with Roglič
At 5’51” ” Peterson
At 7’05” the Peloton, 49 riders with all GC top 20 riders.
Another GC rider accelerates away from the peloton, GC 18th Maillet, a bit later also GC 7th Kudus attacks.
5 km left for Gilanipoor
At 2’19 Martinez At 3’56 Roglič
At 5’37” Krizek, Maillet, Peterson and Kudus.
At 6’32” the Peloton, 45 riders.
The most notable riders dropped at this point are: Mai and Stetina
Another attack from the peloton Velits (27th), Shikai (15th) and Duarte (10th) they get about 35” before we see the most interesting move so far, Henao (5th) accelerates, at his wheel race leader Pluchkin, they start steadily building a lead over the peloton, until we finally see Denifl (2nd) start pursuing on his own, realizing the peloton was to slow under the circumstances.
3 km left for Gilanipoor.
At 2’24” Martinez
At 2’56 Kudus and Roglič
At 3’36” Shikai
At 4’06 Duarte, Velits, Maillet, Henao Pluchkin
At 5’09 Denifl
At 5’35 13 riders with: Monsalve (3rd), Ji (12th), Keizer (6th), Úran (4th), Carthy (20th), Valls (9th) and Garby (11th)
Gilanipoor first under the red kite, he will not toss away this win and we may just move to the finish line, but let’s take a final look at the situation before we do so.
At 1’45” Kudus have cut more than a minute from the lead and passed Martinez, he seems to be at fire.
So does Shikai now at 1’54”, cutting more than 1’30 of the lead also having passed Martinez.
Not to mention Henao, who somewhat surprisingly have left the race leader behind now with Martinez at 2’27”
At 2’42” Roglič
At 2’58 Denifl have close the gab to Pluchkin, Velits and Duarte
At 3’41” Úran
At 4’11” Ji
At 4’22” Maillet and Valls
At 4’49” Signorini (13th), Monsalve, Keizer and Garby
Everyone else at 5’+
Gilanipoor takes an impressive win in Tarso, after a brilliant attack over more than 80 kilometers of hard mountain terrain, by that also moving into GC top 20.
Kudus 2nd at 34”, with this result moving from 7th to 4th in GC.
Shikai 3rd at 47” also a good move from 15th to 7th in GC.
Henao Montoya 4th at 1’06”, advancing from 5th to 3rd in GC.
Velits with a strong finish 5th at 1'46” also with a good move to GC 14th.
Denifl 6th, Pluchkin 7th, Duarte 8th and Úran 9th all at 2'10”
Ji round of top 10, in front of Roglič and Martinez all at 2'35”
Today’s biggest loser
Monsalve comes in as 15th losing 3’42”, moving from 3rd to 6th.
