Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 3: Medellin – Tarso 142.2 km

Welcome to the 3rd stage of Vuelta a Colombia, we continue in the mountains today with many shorter but very hard climbs, before another Hors catégorie summit finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/0.jpg

We saw many riders lose to the time limit yesterday; another short stage today may also be difficult to survive for the sprinters and other weak climbers.
Sunny but winds at 40-45/km hour may influence the race.

3rd in KoM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson opens the race, soon also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Anderberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Cherkasov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Jung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Nonaka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Owen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petelin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Pranata attack in smaller groups.

The 9 riders join up with 15 km to the first KoM, but as soon as the slope gets over 4.5%, It is evident that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Anderberg may not have the right legs for a challenge like this one.

5.5 km to the KoM, 128.3 km to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/2.jpg

The selection continues as we get closer to the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek takes the KoM (cat3)

Looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek got his climber legs on the morning, he attacks again and win the next KoM (cat3)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson rejoins the front at the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek on the move again, winning the first category 2 climb

At 3’16” the Peloton, 126 riders, 83.2 km to the finish.

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor accelerates, very rapidly overtaking rider by rider in front of him. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez on the move, the slopes on these climbs horrible, able to create huge gabs very fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor win the 2nd Category 2 climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/5.jpg

Up front the first four riders team up at the descent, now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Cherkasov between the leading group and the peloton. In the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Nitu moves to the front may be a sight that the pursuit will be intensified from here.

As we have seen before in leading group splits on the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor win another Category 2 climb.
At 1’21” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez

At 7’08” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Cherkasov
At 8’20” the Peloton, 97 riders, 52 km to the finish, a long way to go especially considering the brutal climb to come, but those gabs is getting serious.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun has moved to the front of the peloton now helping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Nitu

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor also wins the cat.4 and the intermediate sprint.

This is the situation at the start of the final hors catégorie climb to Tarso.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor alone in front with 18 km to the finish.
At 2’03” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez
At 3’42” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek
At 5’43” ” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson
At 10’00” the Peloton, 89 riders.
With this huge gab it is not only possible that Gilanipoor might win the stage, but also make an impressive move up the GC, he is 46th at 11’44”

As the peloton start the climb everyone in GC top 20 is rather well positioned, all sitting in the better half. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Scarponi setting the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/7.jpg

With a little more than 13 km left for the peloton, we see the first attack from a GC rider, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglič (14th), his move also provoke that other riders start chasing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Valls, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Duarte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Garby now in front of the peloton.

After 2.5 km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglič joins teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Krizek taking a breather at his wheel.

With 9.2 km to the top for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor, the situation is.
At 2’18” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez

At 5’51” ” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson
At 7’05” the Peloton, 49 riders with all GC top 20 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/3/8.jpg

Another GC rider accelerates away from the peloton, GC 18th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet, a bit later also GC 7th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Kudus attacks.

Another attack from the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits (27th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Shikai (15th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Duarte (10th) they get about 35” before we see the most interesting move so far, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao (5th) accelerates, at his wheel race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin, they start steadily building a lead over the peloton, until we finally see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl (2nd) start pursuing on his own, realizing the peloton was to slow under the circumstances.

3 km left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor first under the red kite, he will not toss away this win and we may just move to the finish line, but let’s take a final look at the situation before we do so.

So does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Shikai now at 1’54”, cutting more than 1’30 of the lead also having passed Martinez.

Not to mention pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao, who somewhat surprisingly have left the race leader behind now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez at 2’27”
