Welcome to the 2nd stage of Vuelta a Colombia, today we are moving directly into the mountains, attacking the Hors catégorie Alto de Letras from two directions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/0.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff expected to dominate a stage like this. The Spectators looking out for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Úran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao to make a good result today.

The weather is perfect, expecting neither wind nor rain to influence the result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/1.jpg

We start with brutal 65 km basically only moving upwards to the first Hors catégorie climb, most sections on the first 50 km in the region of 5-7%.

The first move comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Turgis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Sinelobov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Owen, a little further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Daniel struggling with the hard slopes, fighting to close a small gab.

In the meantime attacks also from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson, later also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Daniel and joins the trio in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner also catch and drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Daniel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png De Souza joined from behind by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Per and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Sendeku.

A little later up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson now alone, at 10” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Sinelobov, at 52” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Turgis, at 1’14” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Owen.

The peloton have now swallowed everyone else, all this with just 15 km raced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/2.jpg

From now things are stabilized, Team Popo4Ever have been leading the peloton right from the start, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Scarponi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Nitu now upping the pace a little, expectantly soon dropping the lace leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit and other riders very weak in this terrain.

27.6 km to the top and 92 to the line.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Sinelobov reeled in now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson left in front with 1’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson takes the KoM with 1’11” to the peloton.

In the peloton still led by Team Popo4Ever, some of the major contenders have moved in between the first 20 riders, indication that they are ready for the battel to come. Besides pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin sitting right behind his train we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl (protected), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Kudus (protected), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Úran (protected), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Keizer ((protected).

A few good climber in trouble on the first climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Koshevoy almost 5 minutes behind.

First pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Stetina and a few seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet attacks after the top, trying to make a difference on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/5.jpg

With 51 km left the two riders join the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet accelerates and wins the bonus sprint.

After the sprint there is a short contra hill, enough to burn up the last calories left in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Peterson.

He was caught with 35 km left, at that point 1’12” from the duo to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/6.jpg

The front group has 51” when the road starts to rise again, but just another 5 kilometers and it is over for the breakaway, the peloton lead the race.

It is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff setting a hard pace, 68 riders in the peloton but it is stretched out, riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglič and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Ji, either having a horrible day or playing a dangerous game, both amongst the last ten in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/7.jpg

14 km lets
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Bagot in trouble

10 km to the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Dzhus now for the first time putting pressure in front.
The result comes after just 1 km when the peloton splits, 21 riders in trouble:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Borisavljevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gilanipoor and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Stetina miss the cut.

Also a hard day’s work is over for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Nitu

7.5 km left, new splits, another 20 riders in trouble:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Iino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Hiratsuka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Senni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Poljanski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Novak.

Also a hard day’s work is over for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Scarponi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet survived the split, but soon he loses his wheel, starts gliding back.

We are down to 17 riders, 6 km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet fight his way back, but over the next 1.5 km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Dzhus turn up the heat a bit more, dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png De la Cruz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Signorini and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maillet

Then we get the attack between the favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/9.jpg

3.3 km to the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve leads the poursuivant, separating a group of 5 riders from the rest of the favorites, the original 14 rider group now split in three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Colom/2/10.jpg

2.8 km to the top
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin attacks, immediately dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl, behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve have also laid a bit of distance to the other riders in his group.

Alone and approaching the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin can close the jersey and lift his arms, celebration with 300 meters left.

This was Aleksandr Pluchkin’s first stage win in Vuelta a Colombia, him and his team also took every single classification in the race, besides the youth lead now in the hands of Merhawi Kudus from Repsol

The short stage and high pace made many riders suffer, 45 riders missed the time limit, full list at the bottom of race results.
