Circulo de Juarez - Stage 2
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_000.png

Stage 2 - Ascensión > Galeana Second day here in Mexico and we should expect another bunch sprint decision. Guarnieri as the GC leader and already in the position to defend yellow until the end. Van Heerden gave him a good fight though and will try to bounce back. Also Manninen did well to sprint to a podium result, while other favorites like particularly Salleh truly disappointed in the opening stage.

Like yesterday, it's no easy way to form the break of the day and we have several empty-handed attempts in the first kilometres:

#1 - Yechezkel, Anderberg, Kukrle, Killy
#2 - Kulppi, Nardin, Anderberg, M Velits
#3 - Daspuntsag, Plucinski, Anderberg, Zaraliev
#4 - M Velits, Anderberg, Nardin, Daspuntsag, Stoenchev, Blums

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_001.jpg

Still no group allowed to go clear as the peloton reaches the first Cat4 mountain sprint:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Daspuntsag with another attack and taking the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Anderberg and Yomoto! Anderberg obviously willing to wear the polka dot for another day (and he indeed takes the sole lead that way):

Provisional KoM Anderberg 8, Hänninen 5, Daspuntsag 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_002.jpg

The attackers, however, once again fail to stay clear and so the attempts go on:

#5 - Yomoto, Gregaard, Brynjolfsson, Schinnagel, Blums
#6 - Kamp, Savickas, Machado, Powless
#7 - Kulppi, Nardin, Zaraliev, Plucinski, Anderberg

Empty-handed, yet again! The first intermediate sprint goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi then, who was the only one sprinting for those points and bonifications! Quite a surprise, since the was nowhere to be seen in yesterday's mass sprint decision..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_003.jpg

The race would continue to be action-packed with a few more short lived breakaway attempts, that did not stick further:

#8 - Minoungou, Eisnhart, Marchewka
#9 - Machado, Kamp, Marchewka

Eventually, it's attack number ten that finally is allowed to stay clear:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xdd.png Killy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Gregaard (3rd in KoM, 3pts)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xdd.png Killy takes the second and final intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire sprints for 3rd place from the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Gregaard attacking the KoM-lead by taking the final mountain sprint..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Anderberg though takes the 3rd place from the peloton to defend his lead:

Provisional KoM Anderberg 9, Gregaard 8, Hänninen 5, Daspuntsag 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_005.jpg

The leading duo had no chance against the peloton though and after being caught from 10km outside the finish (with teams like Sauber, Rothaus and cycleYorkshire again leading the pack), we're now already in the crucial moments for the bunch sprint. 2.8km to go and the sprint trains have been formed:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_006.jpg

Sauber entering the final 2km still from the leading position and it's now the final leadouts for Sauber/Rothaus, as well as for cycleYorkshire..

Manninen has caught Modolo's wheel now, with Guarnieri also trying to move forward from a rather bad position..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Corti joining the mix from far behind, sprinting on his own on the very left side!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_007.jpg

1.2km left and Corti powered to the front (unfortunately not taking Rowe with him)! Markus/Van Heerden still in a good position as well, while Sauber's leadout for Salleh struggles to maintain it's advantage..

Thorsen, Vanoverschelde, Modolo, Tewelde on the further positions.. Keukeleire, Guarnieri, Vanderaerden, Manninen and Von Hoff behind them..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_008.jpg

Markus still leading out Van Heerden and he's still fast enough to hold off the other sprinters! Corti as well..

Modolo, Thorsen, Keukeleire and Manninen now amongst the strongest, while Vanoverschelde seems to lose some speed.. Von Hoff trying to slip through somehow..

Guarnieri though! He quickly loses ground and is nowhere near his form from yesterday! That may be a disastrous day afterall..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_009.jpg

400meters remaining and when Markus was done with his leadout, Van Heerden could not keep the prime position:

Manninen moved to the front instead, with Vanoverschelde recovering from his weakness and catching his wheel!

Thorsen and Keukeleire ahead of Van Heerden, Modolo, Von Hoff and Tewelde.. Von Hoff amongst the fastest now, still trying to find a way through those guys ahead of him..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_010.jpg

We're approaching the line and wow, that will be a tight decision! It's not just two riders fighting for the stage, but six:

Von Hoff found a way through and he's head-to-head with Manninen and also Keukeleire almost on the same level! Thorsen, Vanoverschelde and also Tewelde still in the mix..

Salleh, Vanderaerden, Van Heerden and Modolo will fight for bonifications, as they won't slip through those guys ahed of them! Rowe ahead of Guarnieri, who looks better in the meantime..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_011.jpg

What a finish by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Von Hoff, who takes the second stage on the final metres of the day! A truly amazing speed on the final 500metres and even more impressive, to find a way through those riders, who were ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire with a strong 2nd place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen, who sprints to another 3rd place..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde bouncing back from some struggles and finishing it off as a still strong 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden, who should be satisified with a Top-5 result in such a tight sprint decision..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Thorsen doing quite well as 6th then. Opposing to yesterday, he managed to hang on with the very best!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden has to settle for a 7th place, which is rather disappointing after a good leadout from Markus today. He just did not have the speed like yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde a strong 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Modolo!

GC-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri disappoints as 12th behind Rowe! That's definitely not, what we had to expect from the top favorite after his victory in the opening stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_013.jpg

Von Hoff celebrating his stage-win, which is obviously a big step towards a good GC result here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/juarez/MG18_juarez_2_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen slipts into yellow! Thanks to his second consecutive podium finish, he moves up to 1st in the GC with now three stages to come. Guarnieri and Von Hoff 5 seconds behind as 2nd and 3rd, Van Heerden drops to 4th with 6 seconds off the new race leader. Keukeleire on 5th with 11 seconds and then already 18 seconds for Rowe as 6th in the GC.

Anderberg the new sole KoM-leader and Powless retains the white shirt as the U25 leader..
