KBC De Panne Tour - Stage 3
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_000.png

Stage 3 - De Panne > De Panne Third day here and it's a short flat stage made for the sprinters. Except of notable crosswinds, there's no real difficulty and of course some of the fastest riders would want to avoid another breakaway victory today:

Van Asbroeck and Rowe amongst the most promising sprinters, who are also in GC contention. Appollonio, Kip, Petit, Boivin, Coutinho/Wippert or Jorgensen as their main challengers for line honours. A pretty strong train for Van Asbroeck, who came short to Rowe and Petit in the first two bunch sprint decisions on the first two days here.

The breakaway group of 6 riders is formed quickly again:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xsi.png Bissinger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Stewart
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Halvorsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Rodriguez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Gaday (GC's 43rd, + 14.03)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xre.png Antonijevic

A few more riders failed to join the group: Toupalik, De Haes, De Souza, Miltiadis, Nych, Pszczolarski, Kaislavuo... Gaday as the biggest name in the group then and after a disappointing race so far, he obviously tries to at least get a possible breakaway win out of these days here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_002.jpg

Carlsberg, Lierse and Podium Ambition unsurprisingly leading the chase of the peloton and with now just 32km to go, the breakaway's advantage is down to 1'44" after peaking at someting like four minutes earlier on. Still some crosswinds blowing and the peloton is quite stretched with the pace currently at his maximum..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_003.jpg

Carrefour now joining the mentioned teams in the pursuit and the peloton is just 25 seconds behind the early break with now 9.5km to go! There's definitely a chance for major splits to occur in the pack, as we now have a bunch of 63 riders with a small advantage on a bigger group with 33 riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Lindeman (GC's 14th) as the most notable rider in the second group and in danger to lose some time today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_004.jpg

The early break is caught just a few moments later and with now just 4km to go, Lierse is pulling the strings hard and setting up a train for Van Asbroeck:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Bonifazio - Pelucchi - Van Asbroeck

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist - Appollonio right behind them though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_005.jpg

2.5km to go and Lierse's train is just ridicolously faster than Carlsberg's duo! They are opening up a big gap with still quite a way to go and Petit managed to join them in the meantime:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Bonifazio dropping back, but still ahead of the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist - Appollonio now kicking off their sprint with 2km to go: the leading trio is 20 seconds ahead though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe trying to follow..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Giaux and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Matthews a few metres behind him..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_007.jpg

Pelluchi has done his work and now Van Asbroeck launches his final kick! There's quite a gap on Petit, who struggles to follow his speed!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_008.jpg

Behind Petit, it's Kvist dropping an dead empty Appollonio! Rowe going past him easily, but he has yet to finally catch Kvist's wheel..

Matthews with a decent gap on Giaux, who's not too far ahead of the peloton: Boivin, Doull, Blythe, Thomas and Kuoreda in the most promising positions at the front there..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck takes the stage though and he does it in style! What a dominating showing from Lierse and their captain today. There's a decent gap on the bunch as well, but some riders in between. Will he gain further seconds in addition to the well needed bonifications as today's stage-winner?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit comes in as 2nd with no further time lost on Van Asbroeck! And also the next riders ain't too far behind to make it a gap, which is a bit unfortunate for Van Asbroeck eventually.

A strong runner-up for Petit, who could not keep up with Van Asbroeck at all though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe with minor bonifications as 3rd then! Valuable seconds though, since he's still a serious Top-10 contender for the GC here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/depanne/MG18_depanne_3_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist comes in 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Matthews then. A good result for Kvist, who appeared to be stronger than his captain Appollonio (who finishes 8th eventually).

Boivin 6th ahead of Giaux, Appo, Kuroeda and a quite strong Vanspeybrouck! Blythe 12th, Owen finishes safely in the bunch, too.

Good news for Lindeman, as his group is given the same time as the peloton eventually. No major changes in the GC today, but still a few notable moves:

Van Asbroeck going up to 7th with now + 1.56 on Owen.. Rowe up to 8th with + 2.08 and so with a tiny advantage over those riders from 9th to 20th in the GC (+ 2.16). Those guys will fight for the Top-10 tomorrow and of course there's still some room for signficant changes.

And of course there's the fight for the GC victory: just 2 seconds are separating Owen from Vanspeybrouck. Both ain't too good in timetrials and it should all come down to daily form. Also Albert ain't too far behind and despite lacking the TT skills either, he does have a chance to grab the GC on the very last day here.
