Stage 2 - Sunny Bay > Hong Kong Sports Institute Today's 22km individual timetrial is certainly another key day for any GC contenders and while there are probably only TT specialists fighting for the stage win, those GC contenders will need a good day to gain valuable time prior to the queen stage tomorrow. König and Warbasse as the most promising climbers for today's challenge and a good chance to gain an advantage over other climbers. Also Haga amongst those, who finished in the main group yesterday.
As for the stage win, it may come down to a battle between Mottin vs Swisslion's Reus, Kovalev and Martin. Also Sterobo as a possible threat though and also Postlberger, Laizer and the already mentioned Haga are amongst the more promising TT riders today.
When it comes down to the GC, it's mainly Haas vs Meyer for the GC lead today. Just separated by 8 seconds, Meyer is the better TT rider and could slip into the leader shirt later today. Their 3 minutes advantage on the first bunch of GC contenders is definitely big enough to at least hold on to a decent gap until tomorrow's mountain stage.
Kovalev with an early start and a first indicator, of which time(s) is to beat today:
26'54" for the first best time against four earlier starters..
Laizer + 45" for a rather disappointing performance
Young + 26" and provisional 2nd at the finish
Postlberger + 44" to finish just a second faster than Laizer..
Beukeboom just 8 seconds off Kovalev's split time:
+ 27" at the finish and so behind Young! He lost quite some time on the second sector..
Sterobo as the next favorite for the stage then. He's only 3 seconds behind Kovalev at the split:
+ 18" at the finish though! Provisional 2nd, but Kovalev's final sector apparently was pretty strong..
Barton with an early start, too (he lost 12 minutes on Haas yesterday), but he's quite fast at the split:
+ 25" as provisional 3rd at the finish, a second faster than Young!
Mottin on the road now and surely he hast to target for the stage win today. He's one second faster than Kovalev at the split halfway through the parcours:
+ 2" on Kovalev at the finish though! No stage win, but certainly a strong time for a possible podium result..
Ranaweera with a surprisingly fast first sector as well and he does pretty well until the finish:
+ 24" to finish behind Kovalev, Mottin, Sterobo as provisional 4th!
Porte as one of those minor stage favorites, who could potentially snatch a good result. 6th at the split:
+ 27" as 6th at the finish..
Manulang ain't a threat for the GC anymore, but he does quite well anyway:
+ 17" at the finish, one second faster than Sterobo as provisional 3rd!
Rosas + 22" for a strong time outisde the TV cameras
Martin as Swisslion's next option for the stage win.. 7 seconds behind Mottin at the split:
+ 8" on Kovalev at the finish, provisional 3rd behind his teammate and Mottin!
Reus next, as we're nearing the GC's Top-50 now: new best time at the split, two seconds faster than Mottin!
New best time at the finish as well! 26'40" to eventually beat Kovalev by 14 seconds - which is quite performance. Given the latest gaps between the best riders so far, this will be surely be a very promising time with no more big favorite to come!
Richardson already did quite well yesterday and he continues to deliver solid performances here:
+ 21" as provisional 4th at the finish!
König as the first big GC contender, who wants to gain time on all other climbers today. He's 16th at the split:
+ 40" at the finish - a solid performance and Pinot will certainly finish slower later on..
Gidich + 39" for a pretty good result today
Warbasse (GC's 12th) now and just like König, he should fancy his chances today. He's a strong 7th at the split:
+ 20" at the finish! A strong 4th so far and 20 seconds gained on König, too. Let's have a look at how some other climbers did:
Izagirre + 45"
Russom + 51"
Brajkovic + 53"
Diaz + 59"
Lopez + 1'06"
Roe + 1'15"
Cataldo + 1'26"
Panayotov + 1'27"
Stancu + 1'28"
Topchanyuk + 1'37"
Pomoshnikov + 1'38"
Hirschlein + 1'49"
Haga as one of the best timetrial specialists amongst the remaining GC contenders:
+ 36" as a strong 9th at the finish
Pinot as the last big GC contender today and he's already more than a minute behind Reus at the split:
+ 1'45" as 101st eventually! That's a minute lost on König and almost one and half minutes lost on Warbasse..
Jang + 1'37"
Gunman (GC's 4th) with maybe a small chance to attack the GC's podium for at least today:
+ 1'26" as 63rd at the finish. Not quite what he might have hoped for
Hategeka still with some pressure to defend his 3rd place in the GC:
+ 1'29" at the finish though and Gunman missed the chance to go past Hategeka..
Meyer now on the road and that's the fight for the GC-lead. He's pretty strong at the split as 27th with just 28 seconds lost on Reus:
+ 43" at the finish as 18th! A super strong performance to finish the timetrial with just three seconds lost on König..
Haas needs to defend 8 seconds on Meyer, who put some real pressure on him though. And despite not being the much worse timetrial rider, Haas is already more than 20 seconds behind Meyer at the split:
+ 1'21" on Reus at the finish and therefor losing more than 30 seconds on Meyer!
Stage win for Swisslion: Reus with a great day to dominate the timetrial with Kovalev (2nd) and Martin (6th) completing a good result for their team.
Meyer with a great performance as well, moving up to 1st with now 30 seconds on Haas. Hategeka + 2.15 as 3rd and Warbasse moved up to 4th (2.35) ahead of Haga and Gunman. Meyer and Haas will need a special day to stay on the podium, but that's still quite a gap on Warbasse and particularly König (2.55) as 9th in the GC.
