Hong Kong Challenge - Stage 1
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_000.png

Stage 1 - Man MO Temple (Lantau Island) > Hong Kong Sports House The first of three stages, the first of three key days for all GC contenders! It may not be the hardest hilly stage around, but those short and steep climbs in the final loop around Hong Kong island can definitely make a difference eventually. Meyer as the best puncheur amongst the starters, with Hategeka as his biggest competitor. Climbers such as König or Warbasse may already try to gain an advantage over some less strong puncheurs amongst the mountain goats (like Panayotov or Diaz).

Two early climbs on Lantau Island and a couple attacks right from the start of the stage, that did not go too far yet:

#1: Videika, Kamp, Chêrel, Meiler
#2: Chêrel, Moulingou, Castrillo, Coronel, Schinnagel, Postlberger

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Chérel taking both mountain sprints easily!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_001.jpg

And he's also part of that group, that eventually goes clear with now 155km to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Chérel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Castrillo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Moulingui

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbp.png Coronel 49 seconds behind, but he will struggle to close the gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman takes the only Cat1 sprint of the day (it's a first challenge up 'Tai Mo Shan', that will be climbed twice in the final stage), beating Chêrel easily:

Provisional KoM Chêrel 27, Gunman 22, Moulingou 18

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman also takes the next three Cat3 sprints, always ahead of Chêrel, who's fighting to defend his lead in the virtual KoM classification! Gunman, however, is the strongest in the breakaway group and with now still 41km to go (and the peloton more than three minutes behind) the Kiwi finally drops all of his former breakaway companions to go solo for the remainder of the stage - and to take the lead in the mountain classification:

Provisional KoM Gunman 40, Chêrel 39, Moulingui 24

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_004.jpg

It's looking quite good for Gunman, who's now entered the final lap of the circuit: just 16.5km remaining and the Kiwi is still 2'41" ahead of the peloton, where Andorra, GCN and Eddie Stobart are doing just enough pacing to keep Gunman's lead in a somewhat "okay" distance. The first split happened anyway, we've just 77 riders left in the main peloton:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Atapuma as the first big name being dropped and Compal is going all-in to support their premium climber! He's already two minutes behind the main group though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_005.jpg

A few moments later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer does not want to wait anymore and the favorite for the stage goes clear from the rather slow peloton with now 16km to go - he's 2'30" behind Gunman at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_006.jpg

Two riders jumping behind Meyer close to the hilltop at 'Mount Parker', which is the last real challenge before the final climb of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas quickly establish a gap on the pack, but face a 31 seconds gap on Meyer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_007.jpg

9km to go now and Gunman has slowed down in the meantime: with Haas on the move as well, he probably was told to drop back and support his teammate for the final climb of the day.

Meyer has caught up quickly and accelerates again! Haas 24 seconds behind, Hategeka further 9 seconds down the road..

..the peloton did not really react on those puncheurs yet: 1'54" behind Meyer at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Uwizeyimana setting the moderate pace at the front of the pack, that is at 67 riders now. It's quite obvious, that the premium climbers won't try to fight against Meyer, Haas and Hategeka today and they keep shadowing each other instead..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_009.jpg

So let's get back to the front, where the stage-win will be decided soon: Meyer indeed went for another acceleration and is still pacing as he now entered the final climb up 'Mount Nicholson' (8% slopes over 2.2km):

Less than 4.5km to go to the line and there's still a gap on Haas, who's now accelerating as well though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_010.jpg

And he's joining Meyer at the front soon after: 3.4km to the finish, the new leading duo reaches the final hilltop to now enter the downhill sector down to the finish at Hong Kong Sports Center!

Hategeka could not match the latest moves and he's already 1'10" in arrears - with Gunman a few seconds behind and the peloton still about 3 minutes behind Meyer/Haas!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_011.jpg

And now for the sprint to the line: Haas with a small advantage on Meyer, who's definitely the better sprinter of those two! With less than a kilometre to go, this may be a perfect position for Meyer, who's now trying to go past Haas..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_012.jpg

..but Haas is giving him a good fight and Meyer struggles to finally go past his compatriot..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_013.jpg

..who actually wins the stage: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas with a huge sprint to hold off the top-favorite and for a very nice stage win on this first day in Hong Kong! That's quite a great day for BNZ with Gunman in the break (and KoM honours) and Haas achieving such a big result for his new team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer with a narrow 2nd place. He did quite well to sense the desinterest in the peloton, but Haas was slightly stronger today. Still a good result for both Aussies.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_014.jpg

+ 1'25" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka, who may be happy enough with a podium result

+ 1'56" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman as the strongest early escapee with a huge day overall

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_015.jpg

+ 2'46" for the main group, where a few splits occured close to the finish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Marzuki sprints for a nice 5th place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Lopez! Also Warbasse (12th), Jang, Russom, Pomoshnikov, König, Panayotov, Nitu, Cataldo, Sanchez Gil, Seibeb, Diaz and a few others in this group, that gained an advantage over the next bigger bunch with GC contenders:

+ 3'23" for Stancu, Reus, Roe

+ 4'03" for Topchanyuk, Cuming, Brajkovic, Hirschlein

+ 4'17" for Anguilet

+ 8'35" for Atapuma, Henao and Mat Senan - a shocking day for Compal, that supported Atapuma until the end

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/hongkong/MG18_hongkong_1_016.jpg

Haas leading the GC and Points classification, Gunman the mountain classification: a great day for BNZ Cycling!
