The race gets underway from the historic city of Nimes, before ending with a circuit around Saint Ambroix. Along the way it passes through the climb of Col de Saint Jean de Maruejols, which is to be the focal point of Stage 2.
Allegaert, O'Connor and Nych make up the breakaway. Flaksis, Cowan, Matsumoto, Bissinger and Anderberg also tried, but the peloton were only happy to see three riders get away.
And Nemiroff's Aussie strikes first, O'Connor winning the first KoM.
But then on that ascent of Col de Saint Jean de Maruejols, Nych emerges as the strongest.
This leaves Nych and O'Connor tied on 18 points, so they will share the competition lead, while Allegaert collected 12 points.
Riders from Generali and ENI-MOL picked up the remaining points, and along with Indosat, their red and yellow colours were splashed over the peloton for much of the day - with Valio also helping out with the chasing.
Into the finishing circuit of Saint Ambroix, Nych outsprints Allegaert for the points and bonus seconds at the start of the first of four ascents. And at the top of it, the break are caught - but not by the whole peloton!
Led by ENI and Generali riders, 16 are clear: including team leaders Lutsenko, Di Maggio, Ulissi, Gautier and Anuar Aziz.
Minions' Selander powers across the gap solo, and Nordstrom pick up responsibility for the rest of the pack.
And they do bring it back together. There's a main group of 189 then going into the climb on the 2nd lap, with Generali pounding the pedals on the front.
A long line of race contenders sits behind the foremost domestiques. Ulissi, McCarthy, Flugel, Anuar Aziz, Di Maggio, Gautier, Ben Nasser and Dowsett.
Watching it all from across the road is Lutsenko, with the protection of his teammate Smit.
But watching is all that occurs. No moves now, nor on Lap 3 either. 8km to go and Luxembourg champion Michely is leading the field - only slightly reduced to 136 - towards that final lap.
There's a Generali attack! It's Tanovitchii though! Lutsenko and McCarthy following closely.
It's not clear what the Moldovan was thinking, but he doesn't keep it up - and neither do the other two. And that's it for the climbing of today.
Now, it's going to be a sprint then. Into the final 3km and Tanovitchii still leads, McCarthy alongside him.
Flugel, Ulissi, Lutsenko and Lavery are all close, then it is Gautier and Di Maggio.
Tracing down the field, we have Anuar Aziz, Mehr-Wenige, Ben Nasser, Bystrom, Paulus, Izagirre, Khalilikhosroshani, Dowsett, Hermans, Prevar, Silva, Juul-Jensen, Uchima, Pichon, Palini, Quevedo, Roelandts, Betancourt, Teklit, and Scheit.
No sprinting yet though. McCarthy has the lead still at 1.3km to go, and now it is Lavery in front of Ulissi as the closest challengers. Gautier, Ben Nasser, Mehr-Wenige and Flugel too.
And now the sprint goes!
Flying up the inside from nowhere is Kuboki! Betancourt, Pichon, Prevar, Juul-Jensen and sprinter Roelandts looking to follow his lead and sweep past the others on the outside.
But out of the bend Lavery drops back as Ulissi now takes the lead. McCarthy fading; Gautier and particularly Flugel looking quick.
Diego Ulissi takes the win! Exactly what his manager called for, to back up his Polish GC triumph. Gautier continues his excellent C1 form in 2nd, with Flugel in 3rd.
Lutsenko takes 4th from McCarthy, Ben Nasser, Di Maggio and Pichon - with Bystrom and Hermans completing the Top 10.
Juul-Jensen in 11th, followed by Kuboki, Betancourt, a weak sprinting Anuar Aziz, Lavery, Izagirre, Dowsett, Prevar, Paulus and Roelandts.
117 riders finished on the same time, the breakaway trio not amongst them - so the stage order is the GC order, and Paulus is the U25 leader.
