Stage 2 - Tona > La Molina The first of two mountain stages and it looks like the most challenging here: a HC climb kicks off the final third of the stage - the 'Alt de la Creueta' ain't too steep however, as it features 4.9% slopes over 19km (including a short dowhnhill sector). The finish climb up 'La Molina' comes at 5.5% iver 8.6km, with some steeper sections towards the finish line. Surely a key day for any GC contenders, who need to gain time prior to the timetrial in three days.
Keizer leading the GC and of course he will aim to defend his leader shirt in this mountain stage. Velits looked strong, too and some other pure mountain goats like Henao Montoya do already have some pressure to gain back time today. Let's hope for an interesting day with gutsy moves.
The same riders attacked the peloton right from the start, but it took them quite a while until they are finally allowed to form the break of the day - with now 144km to go, we have five riders leading by 3 minutes on the pack:
Tennant
Contador
Roson
Nakane (who took the first intermediate sprint)
Dahlberg
Catalunya legend Contador amongst those five! Winning the tour like he did back in 2015 and 2013 obiously won't happen again, but he seems to be willing to show himself for yet another time. Great stuff!
And it's getting even more interesting, as Contador would take the first mountain sprint ahead of Nakane and Roson!
The second sprint though goes to Nakane ahead of Roson and an quite exhausted Contador:
Provisional KoM Nakane 28, Contador 26, Roson 22
SPAR, Minions and Indosaat is doing the work in the chase then and as the peloton enters the HC rated climb with still 54km to go in the stage, the breakaway's advantage is down to 1'38" and only four riders left at the front (Tennant has been dropped from the leading group)..
42km to go (3km to the mountaintop) and the leading group went into further pieces:
Nakane as the strongest now, dropping Contador as the last remaining companion here!
The peloton (down to 67 riders in the meantime) hasn't kept the previous pace and is still one minute down on Nakane, who will reach the HC sprint as first:
Provisional KoM Nakane 48, Contador 34, Roson 22
Close to the mountaintop, several climbers attacked from the peloton:
Eastman
Panayotov
Rodrigues got a small gap out of this..
De Marchi is trying to follow as well!
Nakane as the only early escapee left in the lead, Contadofr has been swallowed by the pack - just like Roson a few minutes before..
It's just a short-lived attempt by Eastman and his group and the main group reeled them back on the following longer downhill sector! Nakane remains the solo leader with something like a 35" gap and he's now to enter the final 10km of the race:
Denifl attacks! We're not yet on the final ascent, but Denifl knows what to do: put some pressure on Keizer and those other better timetrial riders. He quickly opens up a 29" gap on the main group (56 riders), where no one responds on first hand!
Denifl's attack was the end of Nakane's solo effort, as the Japanese totally cracked once Denifl flew past him. With now 6.5km remaining and the leading groups on 6-7% slopes, Nakane has been caught by the big group with all GC contenders:
Denifl is 42 seconds ahead now!
Úran goes next!
It's not quite clear, why Martinez is accelerating from the main group and he surely will have some chats with Úran after the stage. Luckily for him, he soon stops, once he realizes, that his captain is trying to go clear from the pack!
It's other guys setting the pace now, like Henao Montoya:
just 2.5km to go for this group, that is still at 44 riders! Úran is 24 seconds ahead and Denifl further 27 seconds.. so Úran is making up some ground on the solo leader and it seems like it's coming closer together overall..
No more attacks here, it's Henao Montoya, Eastman and Meintjes pacing into the final 2kms of the stage.. we will see a rather unselective stage today:
Final kilometre for Denifl and he's still about 25-30 seconds ahead of Úran, who struggles to hold off the main group though! Just 27 riders in this group now, as a few helpers or third-tier climbers have been dropped from the pace of those premium climbers now..
Úran is fighting, but the big group won't stop.. it will be quite a messy sprint, as there won't be any further selection, it seems..
Denifl won't care and he plays his muscles! An important stage-win and well deserved, too. Launching a rather early attack prior to the final climb, he definitely went for a smart tactic today. No one else (except of Úran) managed to really get away from the main group, so Denifl must have been in some awesome shape. Well done and there's still a 30 seconds gap or something like that..
Úran still on second position, but the gap on the main group is melting! He's close to the finish, but Shikai is coming fast from behind! The big group is alltogether now, it's indeed a messy uphill sprint for minor bonifications now: Kiserlovski, Baltazar and Penasa in the best positions behind Shikai, who's maybe too far away already though..
+ 36" for Úran as 2nd
Same time for Shikai as 3rd on the stage! That's surely a nice gap for Denifl, who also gained bonifications of course.
Kiserlovski and Baltazar complete the Top-5 ahead of Penasa, Valls, Brenes, Eastman and Novak.. GC-leader Keizer finishes safely inside this bunch.
A few minor GC contenders losing minutes today: Pantano Gomez (1.51), Van den Broeck (2.17), Bennett (2.17), Brändle (3.42), Tvetcov (3.42)..
Denifl taking over the race-lead from Keizer, who's dropping to 3rd with + 0.40 now.. Úran 2nd with + 0.35!
Tomorrow's hilly stage will be interesting then: Denifl as one of the better puncheurs amongst the climbers here. Úran may fancy his chances to gain time on Keizer, too. Velits was invisble today, but will he show himself tomorrow?
