There won`t be many stages this season, that are as hilly and tough as this one here in Pologne. 14 1/2 climbs today over 191km and no flat section at all. It`s going up and down from the start and ends with a short uphill section.
The GC is wide open still with Anuar Aziz only leading due to bonus seconds ahead of Ulissi and Schreurs with Lutsenko and McCarthy in range though.
And also other riders still with big changes when having a good day. In especially Flügel and Froome must be named there.
Chaves apparently a bookie favourite for some reason, but I can guarantee you, it`s hill only.
3 early attackers with one more to join a bit later. As the late one is Gougeard though, the KoM jersey is being challenged today by the Iberia team.
The other three are:
Le Gac
Diggle
Robov
The Podium Ambition rider as 2nd in the U25 ranking and 34th in the GC at 3'45 also best placed.
And with 8 Cat.1 climbs it was obvious.
Park had to react and is attacking as well now alongside Ford, Oomen and a bit ahead Schoffmann, which makes it the full top5 in the KoM attacking.
Robov though getting the points ahead of LeGac and Goeugeard only in 3rd but as Park is crossing in 6th only, it`s still a 4 point advantage now for the French.
After the descent the 8 riders are together and the KoM fight can begin!
Gougeard is the better puncheur and shows it on the next. Clearly winning but Park in 2nd means it`s still only 8 points differential. And as Ford only comes over the line in 7th, the others are slowly closing on him as 3rd.
And the 3rd one. Surprisingly Le Gac with a strong attack makes him win the KoM despite not having any point prior to todays stage. Surely some French rivalry with Gougeard having to fight for it. He comes over the line in 2nd ahead of Park.
Meanwhile the peloton is a few minutes behind with 100km to go and Generali and Indosat are working. Robov in virtual 4th spot right now and had the virtual lead even for some time.
Park already couldn`t gain anything on the most recent KoMs and is now dropped with 50km and 3 more to go!
In fact only Diggle, Le Gac, Robov and Gougeard remain in front with the peloton just 1'40 behind now.
The KoM seems decided by now as Gougeard also takes this one and is up to 162pts, which is 30 more than Park in 2nd and it`s Diggle moving in to 3rd now passing Ford.
Generali has a lot of work to do and this came to the cost of the team ranking as Tanovitchii, Hermans, Lavery and co. usually drop behind other support riders.
Though their goal is to deliver Ulissi the race lead, for which he would need to gain 12s on Anuar Aziz while not losing to the others.
Today the 1-2 are easy to spot as it`s yellow vs. white jersey as Ulissi in the point jersey.
25km to go and on the penultimate full hill an attack by some 2nd tier riders, who have passed Robov now and only the other three still in front.
Boily
Moazemi
Barbin
Rovny
Smit
Moscon
Barrio
Behind Philips taking over now with J.Costa and Navardauskas as Rui Costa surely wants to improve as well and seems to feel well today.
13km and after Hermans has really paced for a while, it`s now Ulissi himself to go full acceleration.
Behind him Flügel, McCarthy, Anuar Aziz and Lutsenko.
The others were a bit surprised by that but while Schreurs quickly reacted and is behind them now, Froome and Bellis have waited that 1s too long and only react now.
The others not doing anything yet or not able to as the pace is high.
12km and Ulissi is not done yet. He attacks again and is opening a gap to the GC group!
Ulissi almost joins the other attacker group around Boily and is having a gap to the next. Right now he is in the virtual lead!
Schreurs a bit behind as he couldn`t follow the pace while Froome/Bellis/Costa follow with also Juul-Jensen ahead of the "peloton".
The GC leader in trouble. Just 6km left and he is in the 2nd group only. Well, it`s quality riders and also Schreurs is with them again, but Ulissi is in the group ahead and the other riders in there want the stage as well and support him. 35s already!
Behind them some riders joined the Froome group and they will try to come back as well.
Prevar, Waeytens, Izagirre, Klemme some of the main riders left in the later group still.
1,7km to go and Anuar Aziz only ~20s behind. Hence Ulissi with yet another attack and this time only Barbin is able to follow while the others are soon to be caught, which could be important as there would be more bonus seconds for 3rd as well!
Flamme Rouge and from behind Lutsenko is the only to react. 25s to him and another 7 to Anuar Aziz and the others.
Right now it`s enough and Ulissi knows it by going all-in and leading the whole time.
McCarthy the next rider to jump out of the group while Anuar Aziz not looking able to follow. Does he lose the lead today?
700m and Ulissi is attacked by Barbin. He surely wants the stage win, but it`s about the GC as well. Surely some more cooperation could have helped both the most.
For Kulczyk and Barbin that`s a great win obviously. Apparently forgot about that 3rd team from Pologne before but with that win, they got some nice reward from their home race.
Ulissi in 2nd with Lutsenko almost with him. Both are given a 13s gap but more important 12s time bonus for Ulissi and hence no matter if there is a gap or not, he will move back into the GC lead!
Anuar Aziz as 6th behind McCarthy and Schreurs. All at 30s in the end and hence Ulissi gains another bit and is in fact 17s ahead with only a flat stage to come.
Schreurs remains in 3rd with Lutsenko not having gained enough to pass him.
Betancourt than at 47s with all the other top riders behind including Flügel, who is keeping the top5 ahead of McCarthy, who is new 6th.
Some of the remaining GC riders then finish between 1'45 and 2'20 such as Waeytens, Dowsett, Prevar, Caruso or Izagirre.
