Ras Tailteann - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Stage 2 and we move on from Longford, riding southwards to Nenagh, cutting through the centre of Ireland.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-1.jpg

Yesterday showed that only a 3 man breakaway would be acceptable, and today there is a 3 man move going clear. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Talacka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png van den Berg and ... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot!

But the attacks don't stop, and cobbled specialist pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Kulppi powers across to the breakaway solo.

More riders too: Zaraliev and Van Zandbeek come very close; Rucigaj also has an attempt, but the 'Valio touch' is required to break through, and their former rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbo.png Lindau is able to make it a breakaway of five.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-2.jpg

A key focus for all is the intermediate sprint, the opportunity for all riders to secure themselves a potential GC placing.

Lindau led it out but faded, and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Kulppi who takes the 3 seconds. 2 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png van den Berg and 1 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Talacka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-3.jpg

Podium Ambition were determined to keep the breakaway in check today, and nobody else was willing to show quite the same urgency. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Morey did a lot of early work, with then particular credit for their stronger support options of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png De Vos. They really buried themselves out there, and had the gap down to 1'25 as far out as 42km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-4.jpg

Not long after, the team had burnt all of their domestique matches - with only 6 in the race after all. Kraftwerk and Carrefour sent a couple of riders forwards in their place, but the gap does then start go out slightly.

Glancing through the peloton just over 20km out, two of the top riders from yesterday are both sat a long way back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen, 2nd and 4th on Stage 1 and therefore GC. Consigned to the 'naughty step' after outperforming their leaders? Neither is going to be involved in the action today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-5.jpg

And look at this with 16km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kraftwerk Man Machine have swarmed to the front with all 8 riders in a line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-6.jpg

Soon the breakway is nearly caught but sensing a 2% incline, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot goes on the attack with 10km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-7.jpg

This reinvigorates the fading motivation of the break, they all get back up to Pinot and keep going.

Meanwhile some of the sprinters don't seem to know what to do. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss has decided to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl, despite the fact that the German is leading the relay train. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme also in line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Talacka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png van den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Kulppi hung on inside the final 5 kilometres, but Kraftwerk do bring the brekaway to an end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Terasaki has just pulled off and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough seems to be doing similar, leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kurth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maikin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish.

Perhaps sensing the sprinters on his wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl dropped back after his earlier turn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts jumped across to Cavendish instead, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss is now further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire has moved onto the wheel of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss then getting back on, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander.

But suddenly the breakaway trio swing across to the middle of the road and cause
chaos! Unacceptable behaviour from them, and the outcome is that all of those just named, Vantomme included, have lost ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough swings back into action to lead on that group of 6 (Maikin, Kreder, Cavendish, Roelandts, Ewan) and in that decisive moment, there are almost certainly only three remaining candidates for today's win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme is left to start a desperate sprint with 3km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Ji closest to him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire also sprinting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-11.jpg

Time now for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder to deliver the leadout that counts. They couldn't ask for a better position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Netia are all over the peloton here with Franczak alongside Vantomme, plus Hansen and Rekita. But there's no teamwork in evidence. Mareczko is the foremost Lierse rider, with Guerao and Goss seen behind Rekita; then Lo Cicero, Lander and Drapac near to Hansen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-13.jpg

Final kilometre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan gets the jump on Cavendish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero now leads the pack, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac and the Fablok rider is actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Guardini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish now responds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan, going head to head!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Mark Cavendish wins the stage! What a man, what a machine! Kraftwerk really earned that one, to really make amends for the opening stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan takes 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts never really threatened but his positioning earns him 3rd - and a further reward for Kraftwerk as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder takes 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero takes 5th place, holding off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri and a fast finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/ras/rast2-18.jpg

8th for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stauff, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Guardini is 9th and team leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs is eventually able to come through for a bonus second in 10th place. Guerao, Bonifazio, Drapac, Te Brake and Lander follow as Keukeleire and Vantomme really faded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss retains the race lead, with a 3 second advantage over Ewan, 6 seconds on Cavendish, and Nelson now 13 seconds back in 4th. Lo Cicero, Roelandts, Vantomme, Kreder, Feiereisen and Guarnieri completing the Top 10. Keukeleire in 11th is the last rider within 25 seconds of the lead.

Goss leads the Points as well. No climbs so Sirironnachai keeps the KoM lead. Ewan naturally remains the Top U25 rider, extending his gap over Willwohl and Yechezkel. Bonus seconds lift van den Berg and Talacka into the Top 5.
