One of the tough hill climbing challenges in Pologne. Going up and down the whole day except for the starting phase really.
With 6 Cat.1`s a real motivation for the break as well.
While the circuit is not the steepest, the final climb then is. Several ~10% sections on that last one where the GC riders really can attack each other if not already done before.
Main question next to "Who wins" is how Generali is managing their leadership today with Hermans being the GC leader but surely not as strong as Ulissi on such stage.
4 riders in the break of which 2 clearly aim the KoM competition:
Gougeard (5th, 16pts)
Park (6th, 14pts)
Oomen
Cowan
On the first Cat.1 Park is taking the 16 pts and moves into 3rd in teh ranking with now 30pts while Gougeard behind him is up to 4th and 28 pts.
No reaction from the peloton and Krizek, Planckaert for Generali and Walsleben for Kraftwerk move over the line in the latest positions.
Gougeard as strongest puncheur then takes the big points the second time and is going into the shared lead with William Ford!
Park up to 42 pts right behind them and those two clearly going for it here.
Same at the third climb. Again Gougeard first and now extending the gap to 6pts over Park and 16pts to Ford
Though at the fourth passing Park coming back again and it remains close. 72 vs. 70, advantage Gougeard.
And as the break was caught thanks to Indosat, Gougeard might be the new leader of the KoM ranking.
Well, or not. Park was able to keep contact with the best for the next 3km uphill and sprinted to the win on the 5th Cat.1.
Gougeard was right behind him but is losing out on the jersey by 2 points.
The peloton back to them soon after and the intermediate then was not contested by GC riders. Only helpers take the small bonus seconds.
With 10km to go a group of 38 riders is behind the peloton. It`s the sprinters gruppetto with Euskaltel and Meiji "chasing".
But not ideal to see it`s Zingle and Caruso, who apparently were asked to wait for Bouhanni...instead of going for their own GC.
6km and finally the first favourite move.
It`s Ulissi and only Anuar Aziz is following.
Still on the low slopes and just at the start!
Schreurs as first and then Flügel as well following next.
Behind them McCarthy, Lutsenko and Froome are chasing in the peloton and hence pace went up quite a bit. Bilbao, Hermans, Costa and the others behind them.
The Generali leadership question is solved as well now and they actually go for the actual strongest.
With a bit over 3km to go the most difficult part is reached with 11-12%.
Ulissi yet again doing all from the front with Anuar Aziz sitting behind him.
Schreurs adn also Flügel have made contact while the pretty big group is 38s behind led by the other GC riders.
A group of 7 riders have gapped the peloton and are chasing the others now.
It`s McCarthy
Lutsenko
Froome
Bilbao
Costa
Bellis
Betancourt
with Klemme and Izagirre just behind trying to higher the pace as well. All the remaining puncheurs with those two.
Flügel already didn`t look good with 3km to go and since then always having a bit of a gap to the others, where Anuar Aziz is taking over now as well from Ulissi, who sits in 3rd position.
But with 1,5km the gap ahead of Flügel really opened and he struggles to close it again.
From behind the seven riders are going faster than Flügel and might soon catch him, while Juul-Jensen is the one to jump from the "peloton" chasing those.
And in fact the Dane is doing very nicely being almost with them a bit later.
The last kilometer is reached and Anuar Aziz in the lead with both Ulissi and Schreurs next to each other behind him.
Flügel following a bit later with 13s and another 19s to the group of now 8!
The peloton as well then with the good puncheurs being in front and slowly gapping the helpers.
500m and the Malaysian opens the sprint. Schreurs and Ulissi having a small gap but still in contention and even Flügel might have found his legs again being closer to the trio as to the group behind.
And in that later group two riders surprisingly struggle now. Reigning champ Froome and McCarthy. Just like Juul-Jensen a bit behind.
And they are put under pressure by Yates, who has to attack if he wants to finish in the top10 for the 3rd year in a row.
Back to the front and Anuar Aziz is still looking strongest. The Indosat rider might win todays stage as Schreurs and Ulissi can`t close the gap.
And there it is. The celebration for the big win.
On the line Ulissi plays out his sprint advantage for 2nd ahead of Schreurs and all are given the same time, which now sees them in the dilemma of having the same overall time as well with bonus seconds from day 1.
But it`s the Italian Ulissi taking the race lead and keeping it in Generali`s hands.
Schreurs the new 2nd ahead of Anuar Aziz.
Flügel surely did not expect to lose contact with that trio on a good day but still on a decent 4th with a nice gap to the riders behind.
In the end 19s for him.
Lutsenko next and good for him that the judges give that small gap. 39s for him, while the others all at 44s!
Froome actually made it back to them and comes in 6th even while McCarthy and Juul-Jensen indeed lose another 15s!
Yates at 1'13 as 13th keeps contact to the top10 just like Waeytens, who jumped out of the peloton as well for 14th and 1'28.
Bystrom leads in the first group of GC riders that missed out today at 1'45. With him Prevar, Barbin, Dyrnes, Izagirre, Klemme, Dowsett, Chaves, Ducesne and Villella.
Hermans as 30th losing 2'13 and dropping down the GC a lot but this was expected.
