Stage 3 - Yiti (as Sifah) > Bousher al Amerat We're in Oman now and it's time for the first key stage for the GC contenders: a challenging hilly parcours with several steep climbs and a hilltop finish, that will probably make for some crucial gaps. The climb up 'Bousher al Amerat' is 3.6km long and features average slopes of 10%!
Certainly a stage, that must be the target for strong puncheurs like Kwiatkowski, Roche, Talansky and of course those, who may not ride for the GC - like Palini, Roux, Mehr-Wenige or Dieteren. Top climbers like Pluchkin, Denifl, Velits, Monsalve or Kudus ain't too bad on hilly stages either, but others like Úran, Henao Montoyoa or Shikai/Choi may be in troubles if the stage is ridden hard and fast.
A breakaway group of six riders is quickly formed this time and they are already 3 minutes ahead of the pack with still 192km to go:
Esmaeli
Stachowiak
Areruya
Allegaert
Onodera
Brockhoff
Stachowiak would take both intermediate sprints, but what's maybe more interesting today, is the six mountain sprints across the route:
Stachowiak takes the first ahead of Esmaeli/Areruya
Stachowiak also takes the second ahead of Esmaeli and Brockhoff
Esmaeli strikes back at the third, beating Stachowiak - and also the fourth sprint
Stachowiak beats Esmaeli at the fifth sprint, where they drop the other escapees
Provisional KoM Stachowiak 32, Esmaeli 24, Areruya 8, Brockhoff 2
They won't contest the sixth and final mountain sprint though, as the peloton catches all escapees with now still 37km to go! 103 riders are left in the peloton, where Guardini is setting the pace now. Which is rather surprising after all.
The general pace of the race so far makes the pack going into further pieces then and it's on the next climb (32km before finish), where we see the first premium climber being dropped from the bunch:
Duarte can't follow anymore and he's already two minutes behind the 82-men-peloton with still three climbs ahead!
Pantano Gómez and Topchanyuk are the next notable names being dropped soon after Duarte couldn't follow the pace anymore..
Next lap of the finishing circuit and it's 16km to go now - a flat sector prior to the penultimate climb and we see several puncheurs attacking the pack:
Palini
Roux
Mehr-Wenige
Castroviejo
Dieteren
Tatarinov
Kuboki
Stuyven
Dall'Oste
Rabottini
Bagot
The group can't really go clear though, but several riders are trying again at the bottom of the penultimate climb - 10.5km to the finish:
Mehr-Wenige and Roux with another attack!
Shikai is the next big name dropped from the peloton!
No luck for Roux/Mehr-Wenige and just like the earlier attack, it's only a short-lived attempt. The attacks go on though - 9.4km to the finish:
Bagot and Palini try to go clear!
Dieteren quickly jumps behind..
Yet again, no luck. The trio can't go clear and close to the hilltop, we see the next attack anyway - 8.7km to the finish:
Bennett with his first attempt!
And this one is looking quite promising, actually! He enters the final descent with a 21" gap on the peloton, that is down to 42 riders in the meantime..
Roche, Poljanski and Kwiatkowski at the very front of the main group now, trying to close the gap to solo leader Bennett. There's still the final, steep climb ahead.
A few more notable names are dropped from the main group:
Henao Montoya as the biggest name, who's no really suffering from the pace! He's quickly a minute behind the peloton and will surely lose valuable time today.
Just like Tvetcov, Nazaret, Carthy or Brenes, who are in the same group as Henao!
Back to the front though, where Bennett enters the final climb with an 18 seconds advantage on the main group:
Kwiatkowski still setting the pace there..
..and now he's trying to attack: Kwiatkowski accelerates with 2.7km to go and Bennett about 15 seconds ahead!
There's Konovalovas, who supported his captain until now, and there's Chhetri, who's impressively strong as SPAR's domestique so far.
Poljanski/Roche
Scarponi and Kudus
Roux
Jang on the further positions at the front of the pack..
1.7km to go and Bennett maintains the sole leading position..
..Kwiatkwoski's attack though made the gap going down to just 9 seconds now!
Kudus, Roche, Roux, Mehr-Wenige and Squire on the next positions.. there's also Choi, Denifl and Velits amongst the better placed riders in this group, that is down to just 31 riders now:
Ji as the next climber, who's dropped from this group..
Final kilometre and just when Kwiatkowski and Kudus caught up to Bennett, the Kiwi accelerates to grow the gap to 16 seconds again!
Kwiatkowski and Kudus with a 19 seconds gap on the main group, where Roche, Denifl, Mehr-Wenige and Velits are in the front positions now. Kwiatkowski however looks exhausted now and Bennett's latest acceleration might have been his winning move!
25 riders in the main group now, with Mehr-Wenige, Talansky, Denifl, Roche, Velits, Choi and Squire in the best positions right now..
Pluchkin ain't looking good further behind in the group, just like Monsalve.. Úran tries to accelerate with Pluchkin at this side..
..and Bennett indeed holds on to win this action-packed stage! Quite a good gap between him and the chasing duo Kwiatkowski/Kudus as well, so that's surely been a huge performance from the Kiwi, who may actually become his team's first GC option that way! Even though Velits appears in the background as one of the strongest from the pack now..
+ 23" Kudus, who gained some seconds on Kwiatkowski in the sprint
+ 31" Kwiatkowski, who tried, but failed to catch Bennett
+ 1'04" Talansky, who had a strong finish to gain seconds on the main group
+ 1'19" Velits, who delivered a great sprint as well
+ 1'25" Mehr-Wenige, Roche, Denifl, Squire, Choi, Roux and Poljanski
Two minor splits on the final metres then:
+ 1'42" for a small group with Úran and Berhane
+ 1'52" for a group with Pluchkin and Monsalve
+ 4'34" Ji
+ 5'46" Tvetcov
+ 7'37" for a group with Henao Montoya, Nazaret and Nazaret
+ 11'12" Shikai
A few riders DNF the stage, but Appollonio (points leader) survived..
Bennett the big winner of the day, gaining quite valuable time on many premium climbers. Kudus, however, must be considered another big winner, as he managed to gain more than a minute on guys like Denifl, Choi, Úran, Pluchkin, Berhane and Monsalve. With just 31 seconds off Bennett in the GC, Kudus may actually be something like the top favorite for the overall victory now.
Kwiatkowski at 0.43 and therefore in striking distance, too. Velits with some nice gains as well, as he's more than 20 seconds ahead of Pluchkin, who really needs to deliver in tomorrow's brutal queen stage. This stage will be another killer and the GC probably won't like today anymore.
