Tour de Langkawi - Stage 7

Stage 7 - Kuantan > Dungun Final stage of the Tour de Langkawi and after the peloton failed to catch the breakaway yesterday, it's obviously the biggest question for today again. Will Salleh finally get a stage-win here? The Aussies Matthews and Von Hoff amongst yesterday's best sprinters, but only for a Top-5 finish. Will they aim for more today?

Guillén leading the points classification, that is still all open though. Beside another stage-win, this is probably his biggest goal for today's stage, that should suit him better than yesterday's profile (where he was still in the mix for the reduced bunch sprint though)!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_001.jpg

Like yesterday, it's 7 riders in the first group going clear from the pack - and like yesterday, this first group will make for the break of the day then:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot (6th in KoM, 5th in Points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Puusepp
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Hindley
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Girdlestone
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Urcelay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Appleby

Despite being in striking distance for the points classification, Vichot doesn't contest the first sprint, that is won by Girdlestone (without showing any interest for it, tough)..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_002.jpg

Vichot however takes the only mountain sprint, which will make him jump to 5th in the KoM classification..

..he continues to ignore the further two intermediate sprints though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_003.jpg

The usual business: Sauber Petronas as the most active team in the chase and like yesterday, they cut down the breakaway's gap to a minute with now 21km left in the stage.. some minor support from Swisslion and ENI-MOL, just like it used to be since three days now. The mission is clear enough: Salleh wants to have a shot at his first ever stage-win in this race..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_004.jpg

..but it's probably another fail today: just 5km to go for the leading group, that is still 1'08" ahead of the peloton! The first attacks go now:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Girdlestone launches the first move..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Hindley tries to follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_005.jpg

No luck for both and they got caught by their breakaway companions soon after.. the young Australian does not give up though:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Hindley goes again with now 3km remaining!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh's train once again at the front of the pack, but today the disadvantage is even bigger than yesterday! There's Coutinho, Matthews, Guillen's train, Korzh, King and Vanoverschelde, but it's all about minor Top-10 positions and of course the points classification from now on..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_007.jpg

..speaking of the points classification:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot is becoming a real threat for Guillén, as he's the only one launching another attack to catch up to Hindley with now only one kilometre to go!

Vichot is known for his great kick and he quickly bridged across Hindley, who's still 15 seconds ahead of his former breakaway group! Quite a strong showing of the young gun so far..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_008.jpg

..and it ain't easy for Vichot to finally go past Hindley! Just a few hundred metres to go, it's Hindley vs Vichot for the stage-win and the young Aussie somehow maintains his narrow lead..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_009.jpg

..for the win: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Hindley indeed held off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot to take the final stage of the race! That's definitely a surprising winner from this breakaway group and once Vichot launched his move, it was hard to believe that Hindley would have something left to keep his lead. His second attack though apparently came with a perfect timing..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Puusepp sprints for 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Appleby!

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Girdlestone finishes ahead of the nearing bunch as 6th on the day..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews again the best in the bunch sprint, but again for only a minor result as 7th today.. Aregger 8th ahead of Salleh, breakaway rider Urcelay and Guillén - that's just minor points for him and with Vichot scoring so many points.. well..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_7_012.jpg

Let's talk about the GC first though: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza is the well deserved winner of the Tour de Langkawi 2018! After taking the first mountain stage in a dominant fashion, he went with the only serious attack on the second key stage and finished on the stage-podium again. Definitely what he came for and so his team will be quite happy with the race (even though Matthews might have done more, if it wasn't for two late breakaway wins).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König completing the GC podium ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Costagli - which ain't a surprising result at all. Pinot a deserved runner-up and shared KoM-winner, since he did so well in the second key stage. König with a somewhat quiet performance, but good enough to achieve a podium result in such a prestigious stage race.

A great 5th for Seibeb ahead of Pomoshnikov, Stancu, Rodrigues, Panayotov and Grmay..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot takes the points classification with 56pts! Guillén 50pts as 2nd and Suaza kept his third place thanks to no sprinters claiming big points today. A nice reward for Vichot's aggressive racing here and maybe something, that will make it easier for him to forget that he could not grab the stage today..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Potocki best young rider and therefore adding additional key points for a quite strong GCN ProTeam here. They showed their colours quite prominently and should be happy with the overall points haul coming from Malaysia.
