Tour of the Middle East - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_000.png

Stage 2 - Dubai > Dubai We're heading for the United Arab Emirates, where the second flat stage will start and finish in Dubai. Less wind than yesterday and therefore another great chance for sprinters to shine: Guardini took the opening stage and will certainly try to be in the mix again. Te Brake had a superb first day, too, while Guerao and Appollonio definitely should aim for line honours today. Just like a few other guys, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_001.jpg

Like yesterday, it's a rather hectical start with a few empty-handed breakaway attempts in the first kilometres:

#1: Speirs, Areruya, Owen, Cherkasov, Savini, García Cortina, Castrillo
#2: Areruya, Owen, Cherkasov, García Cortina, Castrillo, Grossschartner
#3: Owen, García Cortina, Castrillo, Palini, Speirs

..and it's Speirs, who eventually holds on to stay clear, accompanied by two other escapees:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Nonaka
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Konovalovas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_002.jpg

SPAR, cycleYorkshire and Carlsberg again as those teams leading the pursuit of the early break with now just 33km remaining, the peloton has narrowed the gap back to two minutes (it peaked at six)..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Speirs has an easy time winning the two intermediate sprints with Nonaka and Konovalovas sharing two 2nd and two 3rd places each. No surprise to see Speirs dominating those contests.

The breakaway's gap is down to 1'16" with now 17km to go..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_004.jpg

..and 5km before finish, the breakaway's over! Carlsberg, cycleYorkshire (and also SPAR) working well at the front of the pack and they will provide their sprinters another bunch sprint decision today!

2.3km to go and it's once again no ideal picture as for the trains, but at least there's the already mentioned three teams trying to set up trains again:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_006.jpg

1.5km to go and Kvist has done his work - Carlsberg has lost some ground in the meantime though!

Nelson is moving forward with some great speed, but just like yesterday, he totally missed out on the early positioning.. Petit/Guardini really not too well positioned now and it's surely a dangerous move to drop back that far at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_007.jpg

700metres to go and now that's a great leadout from Kvist today! Just when the other sprinters caught up, he's leading Appollonio to quite a notable gap now!

Guerao lost Hsu's wheel, who is still at the front of the bunch.. Drapac and Te Brake right behind him and there's also Willwohl, Guerao, cycleYorkshire's leadouts (!), Nelson and Vingerling..

Guardini quite far behind and that ain't looking good for him so far!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_008.jpg

Appollonio now launching his final kick with Kvist dropping back now.. that's certainly a premium position he's been brought to!

Drapac now head-to-head with Nelson, as Hsu can't compete anymore.. Guerao though in danger of getting boxed in by Kvist/Hsu..

Te Brake still going strong, there's also Tvetcov/Corti/Rowe, Petit and Peeters.. Guardini still to far behind the action, though making up some ground now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_009.jpg

Appollonio is going to win this and Drapac is pushing for a podium result now! Te Brake right behind him, but Nelson can't keep up with his pace anymore!

Petit and Peeters with a strong finishing kick so far and Guerao indeed struggles to slip through those guys ahead of him.. also Guardini won't make it to the front, he's really not too fast at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio finishes off a great leadout today and he wins the second stage by quite a margin. After missing out on the podium yesterday, that's surely a great redemption. And with Guardini definitely missing out on bonifications today, the GC lead should be possible as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac had a great sprint, too, finishing as 2nd. He did not do too well yesterday, but played it much better here in Dubai. Well done.

A narrow 3rd for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Peeters ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Te Brake. A great final kick from both Peeters and Petit, as they launched their sprints with Guardini still at their side!

Willwohl 6th ahead of Nelson (who won't be happy with his two sprints here), Vingerling, Rowe and Serebriakov as 10th.. an underwhelming 11th place for Guardini today, the same goes for Guerao as 13th! Also Lay and Stauff with a shocker here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_2_012.jpg

And that's indeed the GC-lead for Appollonio, who's on the same time with Guardini (who's 11th place today does not play into his own favour though). Te Brake 3rd ahead of Drapac and breakaway sprinter Speirs. That's one day in yellow for Appollonio, who's also leading the points classification and who now has to try to somehow finish the race with two quite brutal stages to follow..
