Tour de Langkawi - Stage 6
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_000.png

Stage 6 - Mentakab > Kuantan The longest stage in the tour comes at 213km with a few minor difficulties. Definitely the most challenging of all flat stages here and someone like Guillén probably may suffer more than he did so far. Will the sprinter teams once again control the early breakaway? It's about stage-wins and of course the points competition..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_001.jpg

The breakaway group of seven riders is quickly formed and they establish a three minutes gap soon:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot (20th in points, 16pts)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Reddish
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Laizer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Umerbekov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Min (GC's 58th, + 19.16)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Halvorsen

No serious GC threat and despite Vichot having collected some points already, he doesn't give anything about the three intermediate sprints today. He still takes two of them (by accident, it seems) and also one mountain sprint. No one else would contest those sprints today, so it's not really worth to show you events, that did not happen..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_002.jpg

Swisslion and Sauber once again as the most active teams in the chase today - with some minor support from ENI-MOL:

the breakaway's gap peaked at seven minutes, but is down to 1'31" with now still 30km to go. It's looking good for the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_003.jpg

But unfortunately (at least for the sprinters), it's still the same gap with now just 4.6km remaining! The peloton struggled to finally close the gap and is still a minute in arrears.. this will be tough to make up now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Umerbekov won't trust on his decent sprint and is the first to attack the leading group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh's train is quite impressive (in numbers) today, but the gap is still too big with the escapees already entering the final couple of kilometres now! Von Hoff, Guillén, Vanderaerden, Matthews and Coutinho showing up at the front, too, but it's pretty unlikely that they will fight for anything more than maybe a Top-5 or lower Top-10 result here..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_005.jpg

So let's get back to the front, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Umerbekov is holding on to a small gap on his former breakaway companions! Just 2.3km to go and he's 24 seconds ahead of the group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Halvorsen is the first trying to jump across the solo leader and he's not too far behind now..

..also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Laizer jumps behind Haloversen and they go clear from the former breakaway group that way!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_006.jpg

The final few hundred metres and Halvorsen catches up to Umberbekov! He's not yet going past him, since Umerbekov is giving him a huge fight here..

Laizer can't join them.. the other early escapees are in between him and the nearing peloton..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_007.jpg

..that's still too late to fight for a podium.. also Vichot and Johansson still have a gap there..

Aregger/Salleh, Guillén, Vanderaerden, Von Hoff, Coutinho/Hochmann and Matthews as those sprinters, who may eventually fight for some valuable points at least!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Umerbekov though did not fight for points, but for the stage and he succesfully held off his strongest opponent to raise his arms towards an unexpected victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Halvorsen still a strong 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Laizer...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot comes in 4th with the same time as the stage-winner..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/langkawi/MG18_langkawi_6_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews wins the bunch sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Von Hoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh, who's once again missing out on this long awaited Langkawi stage-win!

Coutinho, Korzh and Guillén complete the Top-10 and that's just enough for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén to move up to 1st in the points classification (45pts): Suaza (41pts) and Dzervus (38) on the further positions, Vichot (36) and Umerbekov (35) today's best and on 5th/6th now.
