Tour of the Middle East - Stage 1
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_000.png

Stage 1 - Doha International Airport > Doha Arabian Harbour The tour kicks off in Doha, Qatar, where the first of two consecutive (pan)flat stages will give the sprinters two chances to go for line honours. Heavy crosswinds around 50kmh as the only real challenge today and a potential danger for some less strong roleurs amongst the GC contenders.

Guerao as the favorite for the expected bunch sprint decision, but there's some possible threats like Nelson, Appollonio, Guardini and Stauff. Several more sprinters on the same level though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_001.jpg

Attacks went right from the start, but it took several empty-handed attempts to finally form the break of the day:

#1: Aranburu, Stachowiak, Insausti
#2: Aranburu, Stachowiak, Insausti, Dlamini, Powless, Arifin
#3: Aranburu, Powless, Arifin, Dieteren, Margaliot
#4: Areruya, Margaliot, Konovalovas, Castrillo
#5: Nonaka, Castrillo

..and eventually, it's the next four riders, who go clear from the pack with now just 145km to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Dlamini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Jallays
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kasperkiewicz

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_002.jpg

Three intermediate sprints for valuable bonifications and a possible high GC position after the stage:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Dlamini takes the first ahead of Kasperkiewicz and Roberge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Dlamini also takes the second ahead of Kasperkiewicz and Jallays
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kasperkiewicz wins the final sprint ahead of Jallays and Roberge

Provisional Points Dlamini 12, Kasperkiewicz 12, Jallays 8

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_003.jpg

The winds blows at 33kmh now, but there's no rider being dropped from the peloton despite the steady chase from teams like Carlsberg, cycleYorkshire and SPAR: those teams looked always in control of things today and about 4.5km before the finish, Jallays is the last escapee being swallowed by the pack! It's indeed a stage for the sprinters..

With 2.5km to go, the picture at the front of the pack goes as follows:

1.5km to go and it's still SPAR vs Carlsberg at the very front, where the final leadout men have taken over the job now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Serebriakov though has joined the front with a nice kick coming from too far behind.. he's going past Stauff and Lay easily and tries to slip through them all on the left side of the road!

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac are finally in the mix, though with quite a way to go..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_006.jpg

Both Kvist and Suryadi are still ahead of their captains with now 800metres to go and the leadouts not working perfectly..

Guardini, Te Brake, Serebriakov and Keough not far behind Guerao and Appollonio.. Stauff is trying to go past Serebriakov now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_007.jpg

And still Kvist/Suryadi in the leading positions with Guardini and Te Brake making up some ground in the meantime!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_008.jpg

Guardini and Te Brake go past the Kvist/Suryadi, who are finally losing some speed now: Appollonio and Guerao now going past their leadout men, but they have lost their superior positions over Guardini/Te Brake!

Keough, Stauff, Serebriakov, Drapac and Lay are too far behind for a podium finish..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Guardini crosses the line first! Well played sprint and he surely did benefit from Appollonio and Guerao not accelerating with a perfect timing..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Te Brake with a great 2nd place then! He had a good position behind Carlsberg's train and opposing to Appollonio, he played it almost to perfection!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao lungs in for 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio! That's at least a podium finish then..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist somehow managed to complete the Top-5 ahead of Suryadi, Keough, Lay, Stauff and Serebriakov! That's actually quite good results for those two leadout men, who lead the bunch sprint for such a long time.

Despite some heavy crosswinds today, all riders finish in the same time - no splits or even single riders struggling to follow. Which is good news for the breakaway group, as the bonifications will come into play - at least for one day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/tome/MG18_tome_1_012.jpg

Guardini however is the first GC leader with Te Brake as 2nd ahead of Dlamini and Kasperkiewicz and Guerao. It's always a special bonus to win an opening stage and tomorrow's second flat stage offers an opportunity to defend his yellow leader shirt for another day.
