Stage 4 - Tapah > Kapar Back to flat roads and we have a pretty unchallenging profile today. Just some crosswinds up to almost 30kmh could maybe do some damage, but otherwise it's the usual question, whether a breakaway will survive or not. Two days ago, the peloton controlled things easily though and Guillén sprinted to a dominating victory. Will he do it again?
A first breakaway attempt had been shut down quickly: Min, Chérel, Afonso, Losch, Schultz and Vichot couldn't go clear after attacking right from the start..
..a few of them would try again though and that's indeed the break of the day then:
Chérel (13th in points classification, 12pts)
Vichot
Magnusson (GC + 8.27 as best placed)
Losch
No real GC threat and also no one, who's taking care of those three intermediate sprints across the road today. It's all about holding off the peloton until the line!
The gap to the pack peaked at 5'30" halfway through the stage, but with teams like Sauber Petronas and Swisslion working together, it seems like the peloton is control again: 17km to go now and the advantage has been cut down to 1'12" in the meantime..
Let's keep it short then: the escapees fought hard, but are soon to be swallowed with now just 2.5km to go. The sprint trains have been built and we will witness the tour's second bunch sprint in two flat stages now:
Manan Aregger Manninen Salleh Szalontay Von Hoff Krasnov Zekavica Coutinho Vanoverschelde Mezgec Keough McLay Guillén Dzervus Korzh Matthews Liepins Vanderaerden Cimolai Hochmann King Dahlberg
And the sprint is on, Aregger now at the very front with Manan/Salleh losing contact! Manninen right behind Aregger instead..
Krasnov/Vanoverschelde and Mezgec going strong on the left side (Guillén lost his wheel though), Von Hoff is all on his own on the right side of the road!
We're entering the final kilometre and it's still Aregger and Manninen at the very front of the bunch sprint.. Vanoverschelde has left his leadout's wheel, Mezgec is going right behind him now..
Liepins has moved forward with a strong kick, Von Hoff is now ahead of Keough and Korzh.. Coutinho/Hochman, Guillén, Dzervus and Matthews next riders on the road..
Mezgec is done, but Guillén goes to the front with some great speed.. Aregger can't keep his tempo and so it's Manninen in the leading position now! Vanoverschelde right behind him now..
Von Hoff behind Liepins.. Hochmann seems to be faster than Coutinho today.. Dzervus again strong and hey, there's Salleh as well! Vanderaerden/Matthews, Keough, King.. it's going to be a tight decision today..
..Manninen still leading, but Vanoverschelde is trying to overtake him now! Vanderaerden has moved forward in the meantime, Guillén ain't too far behind either..
Korzh, Drzervus, Hochmann, Salleh, Liepins.. Von Hoff is blocked though, Matthews too far behind..
It's going to be a thriller indeed:
Vanoverschelde went past Manninen, but they are almost head-to-head with the line approaching.. Vanderaerden has the better speed now and he's still in striking distance for line honours!
Guillén, Korz and Hochmann are maybe too far behind, but should be in the mix for maybe a podium finish..
Vanoverschelde lungs in for the win! A great timing and further good news for his team after doing so well in yesterday's first mountain stage..
Vanderaerden with a fast finish to cross the line as 2nd ahead of Manninen, who might be disappointed with his timing today. Not a bad result of course, but he might have been too early in the wind here..
Guillén comes in 4th ahead of Korzh and Hochmann!
A good result for Guillén, even though the leadout from Mezgec didn't work well at all - opposing to the perfect display two days ago. It's still enough for Guillén to claim the lead in the points classification - by one point ahead of Dzervus, who sprinted to another good result as 8th today.
Salleh 7th this time, Coutinho 9th ahead of King, Liepins, Matthews and Von Hoff..
