The final mountain stage might be the hardest with just 135km to go but two Cat 2 and a long final climb all on the 2nd half of the stage. Pinot dominated the race so far with 3 stage wins and again he is top favourite and at least unbelievable that he is losing the GC lead.
Behind him though lots of small gaps for the podium and remaining GC spots. Warbasse vs Cataldo right now but more with big chances to jump on the steps.
Also the KoM fight between Ratiy, Pinot and Man Senan is close while Henao and Potocki still within seconds for the Youth Ranking!
A break of 7 including the KoM leader Ratiy in todays break! He really wants to defend the lead, he has gained in the previous stages. Though also Mat Senan in there and hence yet another thrilling fight for the points!
With them:
Tempier
Domagalski
Matte
Lundberg
Howes
While GCN with Belgasem and Cuming is keeping the gap small, the first Cat.2 is reached and the strongest climber takes the maximum points. Ratiy ahead of Mat Senan, Domagalski, Howes and Tempier. Hence the lead is up to 10 points and also 22pts to Pinot!
And Ratiy also takes the next 10 points and basically secured him the jersey. Lundberg and Tempier next with Mat Senan struggling, though also at 49 points now which is 16 more than Pinot.
The GCN riders never did allow them more than 3-4min and with now Potocki and Anguilet working the gap is getting even smaller. Just 70s for the group, where Ratiy was caught again due to his desastrous descending.
All the big names right behind Pinot starting with Elissonde, Grmay, Bardet, Warbasse, Cataldo...16km to go for the big attack!
13km and all are caught. The steepest section is actually the last few kilometers but for a big time gain, you need to attack earlier surely.
10km and not sure it was the Cat.4 that made Campero attack. But at least he is having a 40s gap now and not waiting. As 13th in the GC he is still quite a bit below his possibilities.
5km and now Atapuma tries to bridge to Campero. Same for him. 14th is far beyond expectations.
Bardet (11.), Costagli (23.) and Medvedev (37.) neither the big attacks yet but they try to get a stage win at least!
As Potocki has worked for a long time already, it`s now Andorra trying to prepare something for Warbasse as Baltazar is chasing now with Cataldo being aware though and also coming to the front now. The podium all next to each other.
And it`s actually Cataldo with the first move and he is followed by Hacecký, 6th in the GC and also chances to step onto the podium as he is less than a minute behind.
All those accelerations see the first top20 rider dropping but it`s Ratiy who has done his job today and now he might drop 3-4 spots but the jersey is safe.
The situation right now. Atapuma and Bardet both bridged to Campero and they have a small gap to the next around Cataldo and Hacecky.
Though the group of 20 around Pinot and Warbasse isn`t far behidn neither.
2.1km to go and we hit the steepest part. Pinot, Warbasse, Elissonde, Grmay, Brajkovic and also Aasvold joined the Cataldo group while behind a group around Teuns, Henao, Roe, De Marchi.
Potocki after his work another group behind with Khripta and others, hence the Youth ranking might go towards Henao today!
With 1,6km also the top3 are caught and on the left Pinot not playing any games. He immediately continues the domination and attacks.
This high speed sees Grmay and Aasvold in trouble. In especially first must keep contact to remain in 4th!
Further behind Roe and Teuns as other 7. and 10. also will lose a bit most likely. De Marchi as 8. also in the 2nd group.
Atapuma and Hacecky really having a great day it seems as they are the only riders being able to "follow" Pinot. But there still are some small gaps under the Flamme Rouge.
And on that last ramp all but Pinot cracked and hence his gap became bigger and bigger so that he can celebrate his 4th stage win early.
Atapuma and Hacecky didn`t gain a lot of time. In fact only 13s ahead of Cataldo, Campero, Bardet, Brajkovic, Warbasse and Costagli.
But the gap to Pinot is yet again huge. 1'24 gained on a bit over 1km!
Grmay at 2'06 with Medvedev. And also Elissonde struggled late to lose another 9s!
GC wise the big change is Hacecky up to 4th with Grmay down to 6th as also Brajkovic is passing him.
Elissonde despite this late struggle up to 7th, but only just as Bardet in 8th is just 1s off.
Atapuma new 9th and Campero 10th, which means Roe, De Marchi, Teuns all out of the top10 as they lost more than 2min on the Cataldo group today.
And Henao indeed ahead of Potocki now and in the Youth jersey. Though tomorrow is another hill stage, which could yet again make differences.
With more stage wins than Kip, Pinot also takes the point jersey and while the sprinter is still in the race, it`s unlikely for him to get it back on tomorrows circuit.
