Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0213.jpg

5th of 10 stages and the last chance for the sprinters. This time a lot less pan flat as the other 3, which means the race top sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip surely prefered the other stages, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Modolo should prefer this a lot more even though still could have been even harder really.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0214.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson for todays breakaway duo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0220.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ikibe did attack for the 2 remaining points, which moves him up to shared 2nd with 10 points.
He does not stop despite no more points rewarded today and instead joins his team mate in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0226.jpg

And with 10km to go, they still have ~1min time gap to the peloton which is led by mainly Festina and BNZ for the sprint stage winners Kip and Von Hoff so far.
And now the numberous advantage of Camparis becomes interesting.

More interesting though that despite there is no win here, a gap opened due to the extremely high pace and just 31 riders in group 1 and we see the yellow jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot.
Only other stage racers are the helpers of Von Hoff: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Roe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold, who are integrated in the sprinter work while their actual GC top rider Campero is also in the later group just like all others, that did not expect such scenario.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0231.jpg

With 5km to go Ikibe as last man of the break with another attack but the sprinter group is flying and soon to catch him as well.

Meanwhile Telia`s Torckler as only rider trying to close the gap for his leader Khripta. No other team is helping them and at one point he was just a few meters behind with a 10s gap but then not able to go any faster while any kind of help at this moment surely would have closed the gap fully.

Instead it`s up to 35s now. Teams of Warbasse, Cataldo, Teuns etc. surely with the wrong tactic today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0234.jpg

3km and Ikibe is just meters ahead while BNZ and Festina form their trains.
As said Roe chasing and Aasvold being part of the train giving them a nice advantage today by the look of it.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Simon - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Tleubayev - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Dupont in the perfect position.

Then in a long line in the middle:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Brus - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Cano - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xmc.png Jones - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Bogdanovics - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xnf.png Sweeting - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Keough - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png McLay - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Modolo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0244.jpg

Tleubayev taking over with 1,7km to go and at this point the BNZ train not able to match the pace and Von Hoff and Baterdene try to switch over behind Dupont.

In fact a lot of "gaps" behind in the sprinter zone while those long stretched group might help the 2nd peloton to come back?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0249.jpg

Yet again Tleubayev destroys all the other sprinters and just Kip and Dupont, who were with him since the 5km mark can follow.
Von Hoff now in 4th a bit behind but surely has a gp now as Baterdene was not good enough of a leadout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0251.jpg

500m and that`s an okay range for Kip to go into the wind. Perfectly done by the team yet again and the only realistic threat is Dupont, who though is not having such great final speed in comparison.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0253.jpg

And Kip with win #3 and it`s still January! Dupont yet again with a fantastic result and overperforming quite a bit here. Though finding a good wheel seems to be key and he is pretty good in it.

Von Hoff closed the gap a bit due to using the slipstream but never was a danger today. In 3rd he at least remains in contention for the point jersey, though it`s the last chance for them today and now it`s to hope for the climbers to share the points a bit.

Bogdanovics with his best performance today in 4th ahead of Brus and McLay. Modolo below expectations only 10th today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Tachira/mg18_tachira_05_PCM0255.jpg

And while it looked good at 1-2 occasions, the big peloton couldn`t close the gap enough and hence they all lose 1'18 today. As most of them are in there, it`s not a problem for the actual positions, but with Pinot in the first group the fight for the GC win became even harder!
Also Roe and Aasvold this way move up to 2nd and 3rd in the GC and while not being as strong climbers as others, this still is a bit of an unexpected advantage.
