Tour Down Under - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0051.jpg

The big day in Down Under and we face the popular Willunga stage. Though as said in the preview, back to the roots with only one passing on Old Willunga Road and then after a flat section and a descent towards the finish.

If you want to win here, either be a sprinter, who can climb quite decent or be a great puncheur with a big attack on the uphill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome were strong on the Corkscrew stage and hence must be considered again just like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png McCarthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi, who also were strong without gaining time. Later with the best sprint of them should have an advantage.

Other names to mention clearly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs, who will need a big stage though to be back in contention as he had a bad on day 3. Same goes for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Gaviria both not the top puncheurs but just like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander still in GC contention and hence riders to watch today.

And lust but not least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kreder, who seems to have a great form here with huge results already and hence not to ignore today neither.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0052.jpg

4 riders in the breakaway as you always hope to surprise the favourites and winning on a queen stage is always twice as prestigious.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Fankhauser
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Kosic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xre.png Andersson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Duchesne
Last even a bit dangerous as 55th but just 3'02 off and hence not too far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0061.jpg

Gautier sending the Moooh boys to chase while the other team is Generali, who are having some huge depth here with all 8 of them liking hilly races and hence great support for Ulissi.
Quite handy if you can use nice riders like Canola or Molard as first support riders and stronger ones to follow later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0066.jpg

As other teams such as cycleYorkshire (Bellis), Indosat (Anuar Aziz) and Fablok (Froome) joined the chasing, the gap basically is gone with 18km to go and ahead of the corner towards Willunga Hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0069.jpg

And actually just after that corner the break is caught with De Clercq now chasing massively. He really makes lots of riders struggling and 1/4 of the peloton already forming a gruppetto.

Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Quevedo but also the others.

The sprinters in ~30-40th position maybe a bit far behind and still 2,5km to go until the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0085.jpg

Silva, Molard, Tanovitchii, De Clercq! What a hill train this is for Ulissi and Gautier knows exactly why he tries to sit right after them.
Some heavy pace on 8% slopes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0088.jpg

That`s how you play the team card right! The whole peloton was stretched and then 4 Generali riders were free with Gautier being the only one able to follow and actually leading right now over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0093.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs needs to gain time and hence attacks. 26th and 1'40 is far from his aims. But he is in an armada of Generali riders. Molard with him, Silva and Tanovitchii ahead with Ulissi also in the chase of Gautier, who has a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0095.jpg

The next group then of 10 riders includes again some Generali riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png McCarthy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Yates
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Waeytens
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Hermans
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Rovny
as also Generali`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Silva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Molard, who came from ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0104.jpg

And then with another gap the group around the top sprinters:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Holloway
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Gaviria
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Anuar Aziz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Quevedo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Duchesne
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Lavery
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png De Clercq

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0106.jpg

Hence Roelandts and Lander couldn`t make that split and are further behind in a group of 10 also including Klemme, Kadri, Jans or Alaphilippe. Even Guardini is fighting today for his nice GC position and in a group of 9 around Barrio as well. And most important some team mates with him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0107.jpg

Some riders were able to jump from the 2nd group to the first:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Anuar Aziz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso
and hence their chance for a high GC is better again while Ewan/Holloway/Gaviria still have to fight but with Yates/Waeytens in the first group chasing is also difficult.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0108.jpg

From behind Kadri did attack the Roelandt`s group and is about to join them soon.
Meanwhile the Guardini group was caught by the main pack and slowly lose ground as there is no team capable of highering the pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0109.jpg

3km and Schreurs is close but also so far away!
It`s actually him vs. Ulissi as Gautier is not working a single second since getting caught by Ulissi again after the KoM. He is the weaker sprinter and doesn`t really need to gain time different to Ulissi but still sharing a bit of the work would be more sportmansship.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0111.jpg

1,9km and still Ulissi pacing as crazy. He might not win the GC but the stage and in especially jumping to 2nd in the GC is his aim here and hence he doesn`t stop a single second.

Behind Schreurs really struggling now and the group behind getting closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0113.jpg

Flamme Rouge. Just 28s to the next riders as Bystrom and Froome have closed to Schreurs but others are coming in as well.

It`s Gautier to make the move now. Can he make it a second stage win to put next to the GC?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0115.jpg

Yes! Not the fairest win but still a strong win surely. He did exactly what was needed to win today and Ulissi must settle with 2nd.
Having an obvious gap in the end will make him feel good as well to improve GC wise. But it`s some kind of tragedy in his kind of riding. Far too often he is in a perfect win position but others don`t ride with him and hence he has to use all the energy to keep a gap but then can`t also fight for the win as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0117.jpg

Bystrom with a late acceleration takes 3rd and actually is rewarded a gap even.
28s to Gautier/Ulissi but 13s ahead of the next, where Prevar surprisingly wins the sprint against Yates and Anuar Aziz. Schreurs caught up by this group also included just like McCarthy, Froome, Bellis and impressively Duchesne after the early break.

57s in the end for the 2nd group around Hermans, Waeytens and most of the Generali riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/TdU/mg18_tdu_05_PCM0119.jpg

And only! 1'13 for the sprinter group where Holloway takes the sprint for 19th. Gaviria and Ewan also in there with Quevedo and Edmondson or Villella. Also Kadri made it to them.

Roelandts and Lander lose 2'52 and hence drop down in the GC.

The new one looks like 1-3 as on todays stage while Yates and Froome follow. McCarthy and PRevar as well with Ewan remaining inside the top10 as 8th and still with chances to improve with more bonus seconds tomorrow. Same for Holloway, who also sits in 10th behind Anuar Aziz and Gaviria in 11th!

Bellis and Schreurs remain outside the top10 but onto the top15 now after a screwed up Corkscrew.
