Rothaus was a ManGame cyling sponsor from 2012 - 2014 and since then the nice beer lady was missed in the peloton.
With an attempt to make the World Famous Rothaus Tannenzäpfle more popular on other markets, the management decided to have a short test sponsorship for one year on the Portuguese market!
The team Rothaus - Aegon was founded as Dutch-Portuguese team. Aegon obviously needed for the main money, while Rothaus asked to get riders from more countries than the German/Benelux area and in especially Portugal was seen as a valuable market alongside famous beer brewing countries such as Belgium, Czech Republic or Ireland.
Back from the 2014 days, this nice beauty by OlegTinkoff makes a comeback in MG cycling in 2018.
The bottles just contain water...of course...I promise.
Wouter Wippert | Ricardo Ferreira | Barry Markus | Lionel Coutinho | Jasper Ockeloen | Jose Mendes | Marco Minnard | Jíri Hochmann | Bauke Mollema | Vojtech Hacecký | Juan Van Heerden | Stijn Vandenbergh | Jack Bauer | Sean Downey | Nick Bain | Maciej Bodnar | Kristoffer Halvorsen (on loan) | |
The teams main strength are sprints and cobbles. Hence whenever the roads are flat, the team should do decent.
A real sprinter armada with Van Heerden as main leader but also Wippert and Coutinho as threats while Markus and Hochmann add something as well. 5 sprinters, which all basically can win a stage. Most actually have some MG wins already!
Ferreira then the big cobbler in the CT division who is getting support from veteran Vandenbergh.
Then some timetrial powerhorses. Downey and Hacecky can challenge with the best while Bodnar and Bauer will need a good day. Later though can climb a bit and might go for other races.
For the hills the team signed with MG legend and ageing star Mendes, who might still have a bit more left. He is supported by Minnard and Mollema. Two more MG veterans. Though the gap to the CT elite puncheurs is big and hence luck is needed.
On longer climbs the team surely lacks depth. Even the only solid rider in Ockeloen won`t do a lot against CT climbers. But maybe a lucky break here and there.
Last but not least two talents. Nick Bain, a former Aegon stagiare found the way to the squad and finally will get the races needed to develop.
Same goes for young Norwegian rocket Kristoffer Halvorsen, who is on loan from Volvo to get his first MG experience in the CT division. |

Unfortunate circumstances, but you've been dealt with a nice set of cards. I will, for obvious reasons, be following your performances during the season. I might actually even be rooting for your team over my future amateur boys

Looks like you have tidied this up quite nicely Roturn with sensible regional riders still in Free Agency. Shame to be losing new managers, but good to maintain team numbers in terms of C2HC race AI.
Looks like a project you can have some fun with this year, with some intriguing riders. Van Heerden with his odd Sp/Acc combo can be very hit-and-miss, so Ferreira is the only rider that can be fully relied on to bring in consistent points (and nice to see VdB get one last season - was a steadY presence for Nutresa in 2015). The TT pool is quite competent too Though in saying that. WCC tried to sign Downey in the transfer window, but not to be. I'm sure he'll enjoy the drinking culture on this team rather than the strict discipline imposed on riders by Scorchio Cycling Managment .

Real wildcard this team. Interesting to see how they do.

@jt: Almost didn`t remember this team. But yes, think it was Torckler and co that made it a dangerous team indeed.
@gustav: Was surprised two Portuguese were in this squad formerly from Porto. Probably the most decent riders here indeed. Hence high expectations for them.
@Scorchio: Yes, should be a fun project for 1 year. The team was hugely one-dimensional on the flat races. Both sprints and TT though.
Think I got some decent riders in without changing the team focus.
@redorddead/D2B: Same here. Very interested as I don`t know about Van Heerden`s potential and neither the cobble strength despite looking good on paper. |

Definately not a bad looking team. Obviously very depending on the racecalender, but I could see this team in the promotion spots, if played well

Rothaus back on the road!
It`s been quite some time since Rothaus left the cycling world after the 2014 season but now in 2018, the German beer brand is back on the road and already showed up to the season opener Classico San Cristobal.
Team strength in the uphill races is rather low but in veteran Jose Mendes a former winner was in the lineup, hence small hopes were there despite him being not at his best anymore and the division itself improved year for year.
The team in general was a veteran`s team with Mendes at 33 and Mollema at 32 being the road captains clearly and had a free role. Same goes for Jack Bauer at 33 as well!
Minnard (29) and Ockeloen (28), who neither had a contract late in the FA season were almost young riders with good potential.
The squad was completed by time trialist Downey for some support work and talents Halvorsen and Bain. First as Volvo loanie and later as only talent of Rothaus itself.
Sean Downey leading the peloton
Post race only 1 1/4 pictures were found by Rothaus riders. This one above showing Sean Downey in a move, he couldn`t explain himself properly post race. He pretends to have worked for Mendes but the others are sure, he tried to attack uphill and failed miserably and made themselves some fun of it. At least the team atmosphere looked pretty well post race as they all had nice laughs and talking in the bus and also Downey was in a very good mood and jumped into that fun talk. Surely there will be stages a lot more suited to his strength and he will wait until the others make a weird move themselves.
Well, most of them were laughing. Mendes wasn`t very happy with his performance and excused himself in front of the others. Mollema and Bauer, who accompanied him in the struggling kilometers said, he shouldn`t worry and they know about his skills and opportunities will come for them all.
Our top performer of the day was Ockeloen, who jumped in as team leader and did pretty well as 24th, which was first of a rather big group, hence showed he still had energy towards the end. But same for him, there are better suited races. |
