Career: Team Index Ranking
eiriksg
Does anyone know what exactly ranks teams in the Team Index in career mode? Is it performance(rankings in the other rankings) or overall attribute ratings?
Trying to get from Continental Pro to CWT, but doesnt know whether which riders to prioritize re-signing.

from what I've seen, only a few of your top riders count. I had a team of 72/73, and couldn't get to Pro Conti because teams had a few 74/75/76 and a bunch of scrubs

The CQ Ranking should be the deciding factor in the promotion/relegation index.
Inactive due to personal reasons.

The message you get on january 1st only states, that it has to do with team strength. Nothing about results.

Knowing Cyanide, this may be completely wrong, but it would be nice to actually know what is weighted

I like this sort of stuff, so I did some calculations. From what I can tell, it's neither all CQ, nor all rider rating. Here's what I've found:

First I looked at the CQ Ranking. I've calculated the cumulative points of the top riders of a few teams at the end of the 2018 season, with all transfers already done, to see if there are any incosistencies with the Index Rating. I quickly found one:

TeamIndex RatingTop 3Top 5Top 7Top 10
Bora34517593571688895
Team EF46078702577518453
BMC94561602171868726

As you can see, EF had easily the most points when looking at the Top 3, Top 5 and even Top 7 riders, mostly thanks to a monster season by Uran. Still, they were ranked behind Bora. Counting the Top 10, Bora has more points, but there's a huge discrepancy with BMC coming in only at #9 of the Index Ranking.

I checked this in my save game with Virtu Cycling, so I had a look at my team and the teams directly in front and behind me in the Index rating. Here's the cumulative CQ Ranking points rider by rider for the Top 10:

12345678910
Gazprom56596212031392157417371895196920382081
Virtu595102514191593170417471776179418111828
W52 FC Porto148213228232
Sport Vlaanderen359611725766805841871893913919

Gazprom, who are one place above me in 38th, overtake me when accounting for more than 7 riders. But when you look at FC Porto and Sport Vlaanderen in places 40 and 41, nothing makes sense anymore.

I also loaded a savegame from the start of the transfer window, to check for the prognostic Index changes when signing a rider. Maciej Paterski, who didn't ride one day all season, but had an average of 75, lifted my team from a projected 41st to 32nd. Damien Howson, who would have been my best rider in terms of CQ points, but only had an average of 74, got me to 33.

So I turned to rider average as a measure. Here's the cumulative rider average stat of the Top 10 riders of the four CT teams mentioned above:

Gazprom73146218289360431501571641711
Virtu73145217289360430500569638707
W52 FC Porto74146217289358426494557619681
Sport Vlaanderen73145216288359430501571641711

So this would make sense if the first three or four riders would be taken into account. Beyond that, Porto takes a deep dive, just like in the CQ Ranking. However, if we look back up to World Tour, we had BMC in 9th, one place behind Ag2r. Here's the Top 5 riders of those two teams:

Ag2r80159235311387
BMC79158236312388

I've checked this with the "real" averages with decimal places in the editor. It gets closer, but it's still the same. Ag2r is also vastly inferior in the CQ Ranking, no matter how many riders you look at.

I had another look at the beginning of the transfer window. Someone who, by average, would have been my fourth or fifth best rider at the time did not give me a better projected ranking when I signed him. In contrast, a rider who would be my third best did.

So my conclusion is: The closest thing is the average stat of the Top 3 riders of any given team. However, there has to be something else that also goes into it to explain some of the differences (Ag2r higher than BMC, Michelton as well).

I thought about not taking the average stat but instead the calculated stat of the rider specialisation, but that doesn't hold up either. Another idea might be that the specialisations are weighed differently, so for instance a stage racer is worth more than a sprinter, but QuickStep leads the ranking with Alaphilippe, Gaviria and Gilbert, and a few other examples also go against that.

For those that just want to promote, I suggest that you concentrate on your top riders. Otherwise, do you guys have any more ideas?

My guess is there is probably some weighting system so lower riders count less than higher ones factored in to assume that some of their race days will be as domestiques, and not leaders so they would score less comparatively.

Even if it is as simple as top 3 at 1.00, 4 and 5 at 0.75 6 and 7 at 0.5, 8,9 and 10 at 0.25. That said not having the game yet I can't check this theory out for myself and the weighting would be near impossible to guess unless it was really simple, but you still would have to guess how far down it goes as well. could just be 1-10 dropping by 0.1 for each spot down the list.

Don't know if that is of any help or something you want to investigate or not but thought it worth throwing the idea out there.

I thought about that. If you look at the difference between Porto and Sport Vlaanderen after the Top 5, Vlaanderen is so vastly superior, and the Top 3 are quite close, especially if you put my team into the mix, that I have a hard time believing that anything in that range matters. BMC in general has more depth than Ag2r as well. It seems possible that there's a weighting system among the Top 3, but UAE with 79-79-78 is ranked higher than Movistar with 80-78-78, and there are a few other examples as well.

Maybe there is a quotient that explains it all, or there's another element besides the stats. I might try a few variations.

Hi,
If you still haven't figured out how this team index is made, here is a part of the answer I got from a Steam Discussion thread:

"Also know that the highest "average stat" rider will have most of the weight on your index for next season.
In exemple, if your best rider has an average of 74, then it will be considered he will have less chances of winning than 75+ average riders of other teams, but you are likely to be above the team with 73- average leaders."
