Come on then. Tomorrow sees us exactly 2 weeks away from the start of the tournament. I know we are all here because of our love of cycling, but I don't think anyone can deny that the FIFA World Cup is the greatest sporting event, and possible the greatest event full stop, in the whole world.
So...
Who will you be supporting?
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
And how do you think they will do in reality?
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?

Iceland/Liverpool players
Win
First Knockout/Third in Group
A little predictable but I'd go for a Brazil - Germany final, with Brazil to edge it 3-2 (finally a higher-scoring final ). Some craziness along the line for sure will disrupt all the likely outcomes.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Who will you be supporting?
The usual, England until we lose on Penalties, then USA who arn't there, then Germany
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
For England, top their group ahead of Belgium and make it the Quarter Finals going out with heads held high! (Germany to win it all)
And how do you think they will do in reality?
Knowing England, we'll just about get second in the Group before losing to fairly poor opposition in a fairly poor manner.
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
Lots of reports of racism and violence, especially when Russia do badly. Other than that, it'll be a World Cup. So some relative unkowns will light it up with flair and overall it'll be fun

Will always remain supportful of my nation, Portugal, regardless of their result. Bar the central defenders, we’ve a solid team consisting mostly of European Champions, a key to the overall success. Luck won’t be at our side for sure, someone as lucky as we were, though incredible fighters, in the euro, won’t replicate the same good karma. I’m assuming difficulties on our group but I hope to reach the quarter finals, at least. Iceland, like two years ago, will be the other side I’ll have a good eye on ans hopefuly the strength of the squad can overcome on another good performance. |

Who will you be supporting?
Germany as always, Liverpool players except when they play against Germany
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
Always hope for the best with a win.
And how do you think they will do in reality?
I've predicted them to be the losing finalists to France in the FIFA.com tournament predictor. Anything below a semi-final run will be a disappointment.
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
One of the most open World Cups in a long time I think. While club football is tending towards predictability, International football is going the opposite direction. There's enough quality in most teams to compete against the historical favourites. Also hope for less of the off-field distractions and more of the limelight on football.
(Perennially wondering whether I'll ever see my country in this tournament...)

Who will you be supporting?
Belgium, but I may need backup.
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
You come to the world cup to win it or you stay home.
And how do you think they will do in reality?
Quarterfinals at best
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
I hope we will see some good matches, but I predict lots of 2-0 victories.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I agree entirely with TMM.
I hope England Qualify from the group easily. Go through the second round without to much effort against any of the 4 fairly average teams from group H and then go out with our heads held high to Germany or Brazil in the Quarters.
What will most likely happen is that we struggle through the group with 4 points and then go out on penalties after a pathetic 0-0 draw with any of the fairly average teams from group H.
After the last few pathetic showings from England at major tournaments I just hope we play some decent football and try to score a second goal if we go 1-0 up. We've scored more than 1 once in the last 3 or 4 tournaments from my memory.

Who will you be supporting?
Spain, obviously. Apart from my country, I will be supporting Belgium. I think it's a great team with a lot of good players I like (De Bruyne, Hazard, Mertens specially), and I find them a good alternative to the usual Germany, Brazil, Argentina... who dominate world football.
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
I think Spain has a great team but I guess they'll reach semifinals at best. Nothing else. Same for Belgium
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
I think the title will be between Germany, Brazil and France. Argentina will fail (it's only Messi after all...), Spain will fail, England will fail as well... If you ask me who will win... I'd probably tell you Germany, as they are the most consistent team in the tournament. Great goalkeeper, solid defenders, a good bunch of midfielders and young attackers such as Werner or Sané who will score a lot imo.

Who will you be supporting?
Sweden ofc beside them Iceland.
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
Repeat of The World Cup 1994, so bronze.
And how do you think they will do in reality?
More realistic qualify for round of 16 or even last in the group, hard to predict team behind Germany between Sweden, Mexico and South Korea.
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
Germany to dominate as the machine they are. Russia gets the most penalties. |

2 wins for England in their warm up games. Obviously friendlies don't really mean anything, but at least we go into the opening game against Tunisia on a bit of a roll.
I've still got a horrible feeling the first game will be 0-0 and we'll put pressure on ourselves straight away to get a result against Belgium.

Who will I be supporting?
Denmark & France
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
Hope that France will win the final obviously and that Denmark will make a good fight, but most likely lose in the first Knockout Game
And how do you think they will do in reality
France will probably end up losing already in the quarter final and Denmark will probably lose to Peru in the group stage
What are your expectatiions & predictions for the tournament in general?
I hope that it will be as good as the last World Cup, which was the 2nd best World Cup I have ever seen (the best being 2006) . I hope for some surprising performances like last time (Wales and Iceland) and thrilling football obviously. Dunno how the Russian weather will be for the South American teams, but I expect it to be fine for them and will get to see some nice technical football from them. The final will most likely be Germany vs Argentina

Who will you be supporting?
All the way Denmark – but also Japan and for the win Brazil
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
Go forward from first round.
And how do you think they will do in reality?
I don’t dare to hope for more than just good fun.
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
Final between Germany & Brasil – with Spain or France as outsider.
So basically this - just that I think Spain will beat Arg.

Who will you be supporting?
and
What are you hoping your team will achieve?
World Cup title for Brazil and semi-final for Croatia
And how do you think they will do in reality?
World Cup title for Brazil and QFs for Croatia
What are your expectations & predictions for the tournament in general?
I expect great World Cup...nice large stadiums, no clear favourite, some great dark horse teams like Croatia. I expect another England fail and i will be happy to see it, i dont like overhyped English footballers.

Sané is not going to WC, he was left out of the squad...dont know why, seems crazy to me.
Or is there any medical or other reason i dont know about?

Reason is simple and imo totally understandable.
Sane is young. He had a huge season for Man City but probably due to the young age as well, he never had a good game in the German National Team. Might be because he used to be nervous or no idea. In his last 2 games, he was twice the worst player on the pitch. Not getting passes to his team mates, dribbling into the enemy again and again. Doing the wrong runs far too often.
Hence even if individually being better than others, for a World Cup you can`t make tests, you just take the best 23 players as a team. And with Müller and Reus on the Wings you can`t do much wrong while Draxler has a lot of experience and actually led the team in the Confed Cup while Brandt took the last winger spot due to his better performances within this squad in comparison to Sane.
His time will come surely though. |

Makes sense, thanks for some info on tha matter roturn...then again, it would be nice experience for him to be part of the team instead some ageing guy. He will be 26y next WC, which is best age for the attacker, so he will probably get two WCs at his best max...

Basically though it was Sane vs Brandt as the other 3 were secured spots with Reus, Müller, Draxler.
Brand actually is same age as Sane. Draxler also just 24.
Müller 28 and Reus 29. Not any of them really ageing guys already. Later 2 actually in their prime age wise.
Sane: ~100 1st division games (England & Germany) 26 goals, 27 assists, 14 CL, 7 EL Games
Brandt: ~130 Bundesliga Games 27 goals, 26 assists, 21 CL, 7 EL
They are very similar and hence one of them in the squad is probably enough if it`s for joker spot anyway plus one of Draxler/Reus/Özil on the bench as well.
Brandt in fact always was one of the better players in the National Team when comign from the bench. Immediately had an impact and good scenes.
I had said it ~2 month ago when the second last National Games took place. That it would just be fine if Sane remains home due to his "not yet ready" performances. And while I haven`t watched it myself, the performance recently against Austria wasn`t a tad better by him and hence a fair decision in my eyes. |
