Time for the Italian National Championship Road Race, where Simone Ponzi is the huge favourite. But can an outsider put an end to his fiendish scheming on this hilly course?
The early stages see a number of escape attempts by local amateurs enjoying their day out on the course, but the peloton has it all under control and as we approach the final climb with 7km to go the race is back together - 175 riders remaining up front.
Ponzi is the first to show his colours with 3.5km to go, surprising no one - he quickly gaps the MOL duo of Canola and Di Maggio by 15 seconds, with a group containing Zaini and Nibali among others a further 10 seconds back.
Heading under the Flamme Rouge and Ponzi still has 10 seconds to Di Maggio which should surely be enough. The real battle is for 3rd (at 25 seconds to Ponzi), with Caruso, Canola, Felline and Zaini present.
And Ponzi indeed takes it, with Di Maggio picking up second. Caruso wins the sprint for 3rd ahead of Canola and Felline, with Zaini tailed off in the closing stages. Ratto, Mareczko, Bongiorno, Carboni, Braidot, Marcato, Visconti and Agnoli are also worth mentioning - all facing the shame of finishing behind amateurs.

Now for the TT - a far more exciting prospect than the RR was on paper. Cattaneo is listed as favourite, but Malori, Dal Col and Balloni should all be in contention.
Malori is the first of the big names to finish, in a time of 1h07’40” - over 4 minutes quicker than the previous fastest.
However, Balloni is quicker than him at every check and takes the lead by 44 seconds. But with Dal Col and Cattaneo on course, will it be enough?
Cattaneo disappoints, coming in 2’22” down - in a provisional 4th, one second behind Nibali.
And Dal Col can’t better Balloni’s time either, coming in 55 seconds down in 3rd place. So Alfredo Balloni is the Italian TT champion 2017!
