Barbados Cycling Festival - Stage 3
jandal7
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_0.jpg

Welcome to the third stage of the Barbados Cycling Festival. So far we've seen wins for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni and former World Champion pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss - but with consistent performances it's the Manx Missile himself, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mark Cavendish who is in the GC lead. Another sunny day in the Carribean, today takes in a mostly flat, 230km course which could wear on the legs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_1.jpg

A rather large break going free - featuring nobody with previous KoM points. The merry men are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Ariko
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Hristov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Balloni
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Abelouache
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Abreu
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Belevics
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Würtz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pozzato.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Valio do much of the early pacesetting with small help from riders of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Indosat, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Netia, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kraftwerk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Novatek. A few teams clearly wanting to atone for a subpar couple of days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_4.jpg

In the intermediate sprint and KoM points there was three or four recurring names but only one stood out: Essaid Abelouache. The punchy Moroccan dominated sprints and climbs alike to claim the KoM lead and move up towards the top 10 on GC.

Even on the last one he was (probably illegally) blocked!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_5.jpg

No surprises for guessing the four strongest break members are also the four surviving ones in the final 15km. Abelouache and Wurtz gapped the other two on the descent of the last KoM, with Abelouache now having a gap of 1'43 to the peloton, now lead by a sea of red shirts with black ties. Doable? Yes. Likely? No.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_6.jpg

Dream over after a valiant fight with 7km to go for Abelouache. Netia and Valio dominant now with Cav just visible in the background. A fightback for Vantomme and Lo Cicero? We'll see.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_7.jpg

5km to go and Reckweg leads the peloton under the kite with his teammates Franczak, Sobota and Vantomme behind. Valio have five men but their relegation rivals have cut their train in half! We also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Vanoverschelde and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni amongst those riding the wheels - could be a big day for relegation dogfighters! Cav is isolated here but calmly finding the wheel of Vantomme. Goss in the points jersey and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden on the wheel of the Manx Missile.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_8.jpg

A textbook leadout from Netia and Valio, three riders apiece with 3km left! Franczak has the egde but Vastaranta coming in hot! Cavendish, Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Guerao in the wheel of Vantomme.

Bouhanni, Van Heerden, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss behind the Italian Champion. Meanwhile the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Fablok duo of Mohs and Guardini floundering in the wake of the two trains and going side by side to keep up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_9.jpg

The leadout men go with 2km left, all others bide their time. Guardini has caught up to Kreder's wheel. The Kraftwerk man rather sneakily not helping his leader on the opposite side of the road but absolutely bullying Van Heerden and Goss off the wheel of Bouhanni!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_10.jpg

Sobota well in the lead giving Vantomme a beaut of a leadout! Kreder continues his agent role by kinda blocking Lo Cicero, Bouhanni and Guardini - Vinther will need to accelerate hard to make room! Vanoverschelde and Guerao electing to go long to get the drop on Cav and Vantomme!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_11.jpg

Lo Cicero finds the gap and hits it with speed! Guerao leading with Goss in his wheel, whilst Vantomme launches but is at a big deficit in speed already. Cav and Vanoverschelde looking a bit lonely in the second row!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_12.jpg

Vantomme struggling here, losing to his leadout! Guerao continues to lead with 600m left but it looks like Goss vs Lo Cicero!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_13.jpg

Guerao still leads just ahead of Goss, then Lo Cicero! Battle for fourth looks tight, Vantomme has the gap but no speed, whilst Cav and Van Heerden have the wheel of Lo Cicero!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_14.jpg

Guerao still going with a long, long sprint! 200m left, do Goss or Lo Cicero have a second wind?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_15.jpg

Oooooooh! Anyone could have got that on the line... it seems like Goss pipped his rivals but hard to tell at full speed! Cav will be fourth for sure!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_16.jpg

Van Heerden fifth ahead of Vanoverschelde, Bouhanni and Maksimov. Vantomme couldn't finish of his team's excellent work and can only muster ninth whilst Guardini, who was very badly positioned, takes tenth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Barbados/bcf3_17.jpg

Goss seems to think he's won... and he's correct! From the second row, he rode the smartest line... and was very quick, no doubt about it. That puts him in the yellow jersey ahead of tomorrow's decider, whilst the tough Guerao hops onto the podium.
