Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 2
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_000.png

The longest stage of the tour today: 233km from Torun to Warszawa. Same weather conditions like yesterday: rain, but no winds at all. And the first mountain sprint of the race.

Thorsen took the opening thriller by the smallest margin ahead of Krieger and Brus. Quite a big surprise. Will he be amongst the best again?

Opposing to yesterday, it takes quite a while until the first working breakaway is formed. Several empty-handed attempts:

#1: Stash, Nordhaug
#2: Goddaert, Schwarmes, Urcelay, McCutcheon, Georgiev, Nordhaug
#3: Gaimon, Goddaert, Schwarmes, Urcelay, Georgiev, Jacobsen, Baterdene
#4: Georgiev, Gaimon, Urcelay, Baterdene, Schwarmes, Jacobsen

..and with almost 50km into the stage (still 190km to go), a breakaway group with again just three riders is allowed to go clear:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Mihaylov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Gaimon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_002.jpg

In a close decision, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Gaimon takes the mountain sprint ahead of Mihaylov. That's the KoM lead for Gaimon, if he finishes the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Mihaylov though takes both intermediate sprints of the day, with Gaimon coming 2nd in both contests.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_004.jpg

And straight into the final: 15km remaining, WCC and Reddit as the teams leading the chase now. Also Eddie Stobart and Philips showing their colors and the gap to the early break is already down to just 30 seconds. It's just a matter of time, when the pack will catch the early escapees.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_005.jpg

With 10km to go, the break had been caught indeed.. a crash in the pack:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss as the most prominent name of 14 riders going down on slicky roads. The group will lose five minutes eventually. Other names are Vliegen, Agostini, Mannion, both Haedos, Stash, Handley, Benott, Appleby. No real GC contenders involved though (except of Haedo maybe).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_006.jpg

And now just 2km to go. The long stage obviously with a bigger impact than yesterday, as the sprint picture is significally smaller in relation to yesterday's packed front of the peloton.

A few riders have a small advantage and it seems, those will be the names fighting for line honours today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Bush
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castañeda
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Haussler
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Nizzolopcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Vanderaerden
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Vingerlingpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Seeldraeyers
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Darbinyan
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Simon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Croket
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Krieger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Thorsenpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Bar
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Bennett

Thorsen already totally exhausted, he won't be as strong as yesterday!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_007.jpg

Yap, he's not even sprinting with still 1.7km to go:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Smukulis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Awang/Chavanne and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Havik went past him in the meantime, but the leading riders are still quite far ahead:

Reddit again with an early kick and Simon/Croket moved to the very front now. Bush/Castaneda, Haussler, Nizzolo and Brus right behind, just like Vanderaerden and Vingerling.. Krieger has some way to go here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_008.jpg

Simon/Croket with a small advantage, still more than a kilometre to go though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_009.jpg

Simon goes on his own just under the kite: Nizzolo now catching up with Vingerling trying to hang on!

Brus loses some ground and Krieger does the exact opposite! Vanderaerden, Haussler ahead of Castaneda, who couldn't yet benefit from his good position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_010.jpg

Simon cracks! It's Nizzolo versus Vingerling at the very front, but Krieger is super fast to move further forward..

Croket and Brus still ahead of the others, but Castaneda has finally found his speed. Bennett not far behind, Bar and Awang fighting for maybe the final Top-10 spots..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_011.jpg

Vingerling goes past Nizzolo with just a few metres to go! This looks very promising, as Krieger (who's similar strong) is probably too far behind..

Croket and Castaneda now in the Top-5 positions.. Bar, Bennett, Brus behind them.. Awang, Haussler and Vanderaerden fighting for the minor bonifications..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Vingerling takes the second stage with a perfectly timed sprint! Opposing to yesterday, a clear winner, who may go up to 1st in the GC as well.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Nizzolo a good 2nd and clearly improving from yesterday's result..

..and who came 3rd?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castañeda! A huge finishing kick and he lunged in for the final podium spot ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Krieger, who looked so promising to finish 3rd here. Both came from quite far behind and delivered some good speed eventually.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Bennett completes the Top-5..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_013.jpg

..ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Bar as 6th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Croket as 7th. Kip (68th) a non-show today, clearly suffering from the length of the stage. Croket couldn't match the speed from today's best, but gets some bonifications.

Just like Awang as 8th ahead of a strong Chavanne and Brus.. Haussler, Vanderaerden and Lay on the further positions.. Thorsen finishes 45th..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Osorio the only DNF today. Injured.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_2_014.jpg

..to lose the GC lead to Vingerling! Krieger 3 seconds behind as 2nd, Nizzolo 5 seconds down as 3rd.. Thorsen drops to 4th with 8 seconds behind and then a first bigger gap to Brus as 5th and Castaneda as 6th (17sec)..
