The Herald Sun Tour concludes with probably the easises flat stage: the route from Bendigo to Nagambie doesn't come with challenging climbs and we also have no notable crosswinds today. Will the sprinters finally catch a break right in time?
Haller as yesterday's best sprinter will certainly hope so and it would be a huge bummer for all top sprinters, if they can't even sprint for one singly stage victory..
The breakaway group is quickly formed, six riders go clear right from the start and they are allowed to stay clear:
Chérel (GC's 69th, + 4.08)
Pellaud (GC's 82nd, + 5.01)
Onodera
Eg
Afonso
Hofstede
No one takes care of the mountain or intermediate sprints, but given the history of the past four days here, the possible stage-win is a realistic target anyway..
So we're jumping straight into the final 20km, where the peloton again shows interest to catch the break:
Sauber, In--Out and Garmin once again leading the chase and the breakaway's gap is down to 1'24" in the meantime..
..it's the usual business then though: the pack can't really finish the chase off! With now just 3km to go, the gap is still a 1'12" and with a panflat finish ahead, it ain't looking too good for the top sprinters.. yet again!
Pellaud tries to break away from the leading group! Almost exactly at the same distance as Van der Ploeg broke clear yesterday, the puncheur surely hopes for the same level of success.
Onodera, Chérel, Hofstede, Afonso and Eg as the order in the group, that tries to hold contact..
Pellaud though enters the finishing stretch with still a small advantage and the peloton set the trains in the meantime.. the gap though is too big! This will be another fail from the sprinter teams:
Von Hoff with his train at the left side
Haller's train with Kreder, Corti and Bole
Salleh and his train ahead of Clarke
Meyer, Park and Martinez on some further positions
Yap.. the gap is too big.. with still six riders ahead, this may be good news for Kreder afterall: his narrow points lead should be favored by yet another breakaway win taking the big points..
Monfort also showing his colors now, In-n-Out's train in the leading position now..
Back to the front group, where Pellaud still holds on to a small gap! Onodera surprisingly doing very well in this group, with only Chérel being able to hang on!
The other three early escapees with quite a gap, they won't fight for the podium spots today..
Pellaud takes the final stage! Another strong puncheur winning a stage, just like Monfort three days ago. Opposing to the latter, Pellaud won't make a huge jump in the GC, but a stage-win hadn't to be expected here. Good stuff for him.
Chérel outsprints Onodera to get another very good stage result for Eddie Stobart here. They finish on the same time as Pellaud..
..just like the other three escapees:
Hofstede 4th ahead of Afonso and Eg!
Von Hoff wins his second bunch sprint, but again it's for minor points only.. he comes 7th ahead of Opie, Corti, a strong finishing Park and Salleh as 11th. Kreder fading away to finish 19th, but as said before, the early break might have secured him the points classification..
No further gap rewarded, they all finish with the same time today - except of three of yesterday's crash victims..
..and so it's Monfort celebrating an unexpected GC victory, taking the Herald Sun Tour 2017 thanks to a breakaway win on a challenging second stage. The veteran took the perfect opportunity to play his puncheur skills to perfection and thanks to the peloton struggling to control breakaways, he rode to a crucial gap, that he even could defend in the decisive timetrial.
Taborre with almost the same story as 2nd in the final GC. Some great points for Statoil and definitely unexpected as well. If Bookwalter can't deliver in TT races, why not send Taborre to Australia to take a GC podium?
Ma the best TT specialist as 3rd in the GC then. Even though Meyer couldn't do anything special for Reddit, the performances from Monfort and Ma make this a huge race for the team.
Dennis a good 4th and with Tennant as 8th in the final GC, cycleYorkshire (also taking the team's classification) might just be happy enough - despite missing out on the podium thanks to those two breakaway riders finishing 1-2 eventually. Clearly a missed opportunity for Dennis in particular, but it's a solid result nevertheless.
Grabovski, Sepulveda and Mottin with some good results as 5th to 7th..
Roe and Cruz complete the Top-10 ahead of pre-race favorite Reus and local favorite Van der Ploeg. Three Aussies in the Top-12 is certainly what the locals had hoped for.
Kreder indeed defending the points lead thanks to no sprinter scoring significant points today. Salleh moved up to 6th, Pellaud (31pts) to 8th.. Von Hoff 9th.. so Kreder wins ahead of Van der Ploeg and Monfort/Taborre.. the breakaway wins made for a close decisions, but kinda random as well.
Besada celebrating the KoM-victory ahead of Eiking and Stöhr. He delivered on the key stage and will be happy with this achievement.
Opposing to Mullen, who does win the U25 classification - but who won't be happy to finish only 17th in the GC. He hadn't the best day on the crucial timetrial and his team would have hoped for something better. Still, a shirt is a shirt.
That's it from the Herald Sun Tour 2017. A premium puncheur surprisingly taking the GC win - a great decision to bring him here. Also Taborre (and Pellaud today) enjoyed some good success in a tricky race with crosswinds adding a challenge. The sprinter teams couldn't really catch breakaways (except of a very close decision in the first stage), so there's definitely some disappointed managers leaving Australia as soon as possible. See you next year anyway.
