Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 1
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_000.png

The first of four flat stages leads the peloton from Gdanks to Bydgoszcz, over a course of 224km. Surely no easy day and some less allrounded sprinters will at least love the fact, that we have no crosswinds (just some rain at the beginning of the stage) today.

A packed startlist with several sprinters aiming for the first stage win - while the biggest question may be, if someone like Thorsen can actually survive such a stage until the to be expected bunch sprint decision.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_001.jpg

The first breakaway attempt is already allowed to stay clear - with three riders building the break of the day. Marentes as a fourth rider trying to join them, but he couldn't connect and is back in the pack soon after:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Koch
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Wu

Koch took the first intermediate sprint ahead of Flaksis/Wu (quite surprisingly a rather uncontested sprint) and the German would also go and take the second (and last) sprint ahead of Wu/Flaksis. The group's advantage peaked at 9 minutes halfway through the stage, but with now 57km to go, the peloton has narrowed this gap back to 3'30" with several teams (WCC, Eddie Stobart and Reddit as the most active) sharing the work in the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_002.jpg

14km reemaining and it's now mainly WCC to lead the pursuit through the finishing circuit. The breakaway's gap is down to 55 seconds in the meantime and so far, it seems the pack is control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_003.jpg

We're jumping straight into the final 5km of the stage and the escapees are still a few seconds ahead of the bunch! Koch and Wu though are soon to be reeled in:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis tries to play his strengths on the flat and keeps fighting to hold off the chasing pack! Just something like 25 seconds for him though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_004.jpg

And he's almost reeled in with now just 2.3km to go! Flaksis is dead empty and he won't stand a chance against the sprinters. A huge fight after a long day in the break, but the sprinter teams delivered their captains a bunch sprint decision:

A rather messy picture with three trains yet trying to sort things:

WCC remains in the lead with a tricky corner ahead. Reddit's train moving forward as well - with Flaksis not causing any blocking on his way backwards.

It's a battle for the prime positions here. Awang getting in between Lay/Castaneda, Vingerling loses some ground. So do Nizzolo, Krieger, Thwaites.. even worse: Bennett.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_006.jpg

Reddit's train not only moving forward, but now storming towards a nice little gap there! Still Simon/Croket ahead of Kip.

Lay going on his own after Castaneda lost his wheel earlier on! Awang though can't benefit from his position and loses ground quickly. Cimolai/Thorsen though still going strong and trying to hang on with a fast Reddit train.

Vingerling back at Thorsen's wheel and also some other sprinters are trying to go a so far struggling Castaneda..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_007.jpg

Simon/Croket are done and they delivered Kip a great position there! What gap he got there. Neither Lay nor Thorsen could hang on, but they are still (closely) ahead of the other promising names now:

Haussler, Brus, Vanderaerden, Vingerling, Krieger.. Nizzolo and Castaneda a bit further behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_008.jpg

Kip now struggles to keep the pace of those others! The gap is melting down with the finish line already approaching quickly:

Lay still ahead of Thorsen, who's almost head-to-head with Haussler, Krieger and Brus!

Vanderaerden, Vingerling, Nizzolo then.. Castaneda seems to be out of reach for a notable result!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_009.jpg

Oh this will be a thriller: Kip loses groun with every metre and he's just a tiny little bit ahead of Lay now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_010.jpg

Kip is out of contention! How close to the finish, but he won't even fight for a podium spot or Top-5, it seems.

It's Lay, Krieger, Brus and also Thorsen in the most promising positions...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_011.jpg

..and it's an incredibly close finish! Wow. Thorsen with a huge final lung-in.. Krieger on the same level and also Brus crosses the line in the same moment!

Lay an unlucky 4th, it seems.. Kip, Vingerling, Nizzolo, Haussler fighting for the final Top-5 spot..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_012.jpg

..but who won? It's sooooo close, that it was impossible to find a picture showing the actual winner. The race judges take their time to announce the winner, but..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/soli/MG17_soli_1_013.jpg

..pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Thorsen already raises his arms soon after the finish! Quite an impressive celebration, as we can't be 100% sure if he really did it..

..a few minutes later though, it's been confirmed: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Thorsen indeed takes the opnening stage! What a fast finish, that really comes as a surprise after a 224km stage. Surely a big achievement and good sign of what to expect from him here.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Krieger (2nd) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus (3rd) could hardly be more unlucky runner-ups, but eventually, they should be happy with some crucial bonifications today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Lay 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Nizzolo, who had the better end against Vingerling, Haussler and Kip. Vanderaerden 9th ahead of Castaneda as 10th. The latter rather disappointing, but WCC at least got two riders inside the Top-10.
