Herald Sun Tour - Stage 4
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_000.png

Stage four of the Herald Sun Tour and we have the second stage finish in Bendigo, with a start at Mount Macedon today: the toughest climb of the whole tour early into the stage, while the profile in the second part of the stage ain't too challenging this time. We do have heavy crosswinds again though, blowing at 48kmh at the beginning of the stage.

The sprinters struggled to take a stage so far, as Anderson took the opener and Monfort the second stage from an early break. Will Haller, Salleh, Meyer or Von Hoff strike back today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_001.jpg

The early climb sees some good action with two bigger groups attempting to break clear with no success yet:

#1: Eiking, Stöhr, Scotscon, Aadel, Afoa, Eg, P Van der Ploeg, Besada, Richardson
#2: Besada, Eiking, Van der Ploeg, Stöhr, Eg, Richardson, Afoa, Scotscon, Konwa, Aadel, Laizer

Those riders from the second attempt though try again and they do reach the mountaintop with a small advantage over the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Stöhr as a next trio a few seconds behind

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Afoa trying to join them

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Eg a few seconds further down the climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_002.jpg

It took them quite a while, but finally - with 98km to go - the group has formed and we have a 6-men-breakaway group leading by 4'49" now:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Besada
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking (GC's 79th, + 4.45, 5th in KoM with 4pts)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Van der Ploeg (GC's 29th, + 1.22)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Stöhr
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Afoa (8th in KoM with 2pts)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Eg

Van der Ploeg the only one going for the intermediate sprints and the takes the first one easily..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_003.jpg

A few kilometres earlier (114km before finish), we had a crash with 14 riders involved - quite some notable names goind down:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Sepulveda (GC's 6th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Roe (8th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Joeaar (13th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Kasa (22nd)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana (30th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Angarita

With the pace in the pack obviously rather moderate, there's no need to panic yet - the group is back in the pack about 15km later. Crosswinds surely didn't make it easy to come back and while they all made it back, the question remains, whether someone suffered an injury from this crash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Besada also takes the second Cat2 climb halfway through the stage and those points will give him the KoM lead today:

KoM: Besada 20, Eiking 18, Stöhr 14, Monfort/Taborre 13

At this point - 72km to the finish - the breakaway leads by 4'14" on the peloton..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Van der Ploeg would then also take the second intermediate sprint (so 12 bonus seconds in total), which would make him move up to 25th in the GC if he finishes the stage with the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_006.jpg

Sauber (Salleh), Garmin (Von Hoff) and In-n-Out (Haller) leading the chase and with 14km to go, it's at least not looking bad for the pack, that is down by 1'23" with the winds still blowing at 35kmh.

Bad news for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Kasa, who's the most notable crash victim to be dropped from the bunch now! He will lose big minutes, clearly injured.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_007.jpg

3.5km to go now and the peloton once again struggles to finally close the gap! It's now 40 seconds behind the leading group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Van der Ploeg attacks from the breakaway and he opens up a gap quickly! Will Eddie Stobart succeed this time after Partridge's unlucky 10km solo attempt on the first day here?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_008.jpg

It ain't looking bad for Van der Ploeg, who's still 35 seconds ahead of the pack with now less than 2km to go for him!

The peloton has set the trains and - at least - is soon to swallow the other five early escapees:

Flamme rouge for the peloton and they are swallowing the last few escapees: Haller, Salleh, Rowe, Altanzul, Clarke and Meyer in the best positions now..

Kreder quite far behind and in danger of getting boxed in..

Van der Ploeg though still maintains a comfortable gap! This might be enough to take the win..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_010.jpg

Yes! Big win for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Van der Ploeg on home soil! The peloton fails once again and the Aussie (who already took 12 bonus seconds with intermediate sprints) may actually see a nice jump in the GC as well. Will there be a further gap rewarded?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_011.jpg

Haller sprints to the leading position with Rowe, a strong Altanzul and Salleh right behind him.. Meyer next, Manan is done..

Kreder moving forward now, but too far behind to be in the mix for the podium spots..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/herald/MG17_herald_4_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Haller comes 2nd and there's no further gap rewarded! Another missed opportunity for the sprinters to take line honours - they will certainly be more attentive tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Altanzul, who did well with Von Hoff struggling (9th eventually)!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Meyer completes the Top-5 ahead of Salleh, Clarke, Kreder, Von Hoff and Canelon. Will this be enough for Kreder to defend his points lead?

Yes: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Kreder still leading the points classification (43pts), but Van der Ploeg (37) came pretty close today! Monfort (34), Taborre (34), Anderson (32) and Haller (32) on the further positions. It should be a thriller for Kreder tomorrow.

As for the GC, Monfort is still leading, obviously. Van der Ploeg as the big winner of the day though, moving up to 12th in the GC (+ 0.50) - what a day for the Australian and Eddie Stobart. After missing the first stage so close, this surely has become an even more special day.
