Hi Chuck,
Throughout the latest 1½ year I've bought two laptops - so I have quite some experience.
First of all, you shouldn't really notice the processors - they're often below 2ghz, yes, but that's because they're equipped with chips which doubles the processor - f.e. I've a laptop now which is only 1,7 ghz - but because it has two kernels, it performs like 3,4 ghz.
Anyway, when searching for processors, search for either Core2Duo, Core Duo or Turion 64x2.
A minimum of RAM now-a-days is 1024 (1 GB). Go for the laptops which has 1x1 GB and not 2x512. You can live with 2x512, but you should prefer 1x1024. That way you'll be able to expand the laptop with another 1 GB of RAM at a later time.
The videocard should be either Geforce 7600 or ATI x1600
Also, your screen size should be 15,4 - if it's less it's not really good for gaming. Be aware that if you choose a larger screen, it'll use more battery - and therefore, the battery time will be shortened.
For the harddisc:
You can choose the size of it yourself, but it should be at least 5400 RPM (fastness). Anything less is too slow. However, if you choose a faster one, it uses more battery. If you choose two hard discs, that'll also use more battery.
And I guess that's what you need to know.

I have the same laptop as Boka - the HP 9045ea one. It's brilliant; the design is really fantastic, it has two hard drives of each 80 GB, 1 GB of ram (unfortunately 512 x 2, and not 1 x 1024), Geforce GO7600 and a 17 inch screen. However, this also means that the battery life is shortened.
One suggestion that I don't agree in: Zepto! No way - keep your hands off Zepto. My first computer was from that firm, and I've never had so much trouble. Actually, I thought that we had ended my case (I had required my money back which they said I would get), but when I returned from USA I saw that my old computer was back - at the post office, even though they had agreed to give me my money back. So, I'll have to call them again tomorrow.
So, the support is unbelieveably bad - but their computers (or - at least some of them) are not any good either. I had a 6515WD (now called 6615 with slight differences), and it only lasted for 1 hour and 15 minutes on the battery - no matter what I did. It was crazy. Especially because they had promised 5 hours when it was released. |

Oh okay ! I only heard good things about Zepto. But like Mike said the battery life is very short but if you only use i at home or in the school it isnt so important because you can always charge it |

Core 2 Duo is the new version of the Intel processor - it's not that much better than the Core Duo-one, but well, there's slight differences.
And yes, I can only recommend those two cards - but also better cards, of course, like Geforce 7800. Again, if you give me an amount of money you maximum want to spend I'll see what I can find for you. |
