We're heading back to Ballarat, where the decisive 17km timetrial will be held today: no crosswinds this time, which should be good news for the main GC contenders (aka TT horses):
Monfort and Taborre have a comfortable gap in the GC and may hope to hold off the most dangerous TT specialists: Reus, Tennant, Mullen, Hofer, local favorite Dennis, Ma or Grabovski are all + 1.36 in the GC. Other contenders for the GC are Christian, Kneisky, Cruz or Hacecký, while some TT specialists like Stannard, Mottin or Robert are out of any GC ambitiouns and just fighting for the stage-win today.
Robert with an early start then and as he easily beats Laizer by 17 seconds, his best time could be an indicator, of which time is to beat today:
20'50" for Robert and there are a few more early starts for other specialists..
Rijntjes just a second off Robert's split time, but he can't improve in the second part:
+ 6" as provisional 2nd at the finish
Stannard as cycleYorkshire's second stage contender, but he ain't better than the two riders above:
+ 7" as provisional 3rd - not, what he might have hoped for today
Mottin as one of the first stage favorites, who's + 1.36 in the GC as 62nd. He equalizes the split time by Robert:
+ 4" at the finish though, losing some seconds on the final sector!
Petrus + 23"
Joeaar just 5 seconds off at the split, looking good on the road:
+ 15" at the finish though, clearly behind Stannard as provisional 5th
Sepulveda the biggest surprise so far then, as he's at the same time as Robert/Mottin at the first split! Can he improve further?
+ 4" at the finish as provisional 3rd! Just like Mottin, he loses some seconds, but definitely a great performance
Cruz with a similar strong performance then - even though he might have expected to beat his teammate today:
+ 6" to finish with the same time as Rijntjes and a second faster than Stannard
Hofer + 22" for a disappointing outing
Ma doing signfically better than Hofer, as he tops the split time from Robert by 3 seconds! Will he lose on the second part as well?
No! In fact, he grows the gap to 7 seconds to finish the stage with the new best time: 20'43"!
Hacecký + 29" to disappoint like Hofer did
Tennant next and as he's 4 seconds off Ma at the split, he needs a similar strong second sector to at least finish on the provisional podium:
+ 12" at the finish though, provisional 5th behind Sepulveda
Roe on the road now and the local hero is impressive at the first split, just 3 seconds off Ma with the same time as Robert/Mottin:
+ 12" at the finish, so losing some ground as provisional 6th - still a good effort
Mullen not at his best then, just like his teammate Hacecký.. 13 seconds off at the split:
+ 29" at the finish, on the same time as Hacecký - a bad day for Kulczyk
Grabovski as the next serious GC contender and he's much better with just one second off Ma at the split:
+ 5" at the finish! Provisional 2nd with two seconds gained on Robert - this could become a good TT result
Reus as one of the big favorites for today - he's not bad at the split, but still already 5 seconds off Ma:
+ 15" eventually and this probably won't be enough for a Top-10 result at the end of the day
Dennis as cycleYorkshire's last option for the stage-win (and maybe their biggest option for the GC anyway). The Aussie goes strong at the split, just 2 seconds off Ma:
+ 5" at the finish to finish narrowly behind Grabovski as provisional 3rd so far
Christian the next TT specialist, who did quite well on the opening two days. He's 8 seconds off at the split:
+ 22" at the finish, with the same time as Joeaar as provisional 14th
Kneisky + 28"
With no more TT specialists to come, this is likely to be the Top-10 result for the stage. The other GC's Top-10 riders like Von Hoff, Bercz, Bole, Angarita, Salleh, Partridge and Kreder lose quite some time - as to be expected. The biggest question may be, how the Top-3 in the GC will do on the stage though:
Anderson (GC's 3rd, + 1.16) ain't exactly known as solid TT rider, but he's doing better than the other Top-10 riders so far:
+ 56" as 42nd on the stage
Taborre (GC's 2nd, + 0.02) going into the timetrial with half a minute advantage over Ma, Grabovski and Dennis.. he's "just" 36 seconds off at the split:
+ 1'26" at the finish as 92nd on the stage! It's been a huge fight!
Monfort is a better TT rider than Taborre and so he may fancy his chances to actually keep yellow for another day. He's 27 seconds off Ma at the split and so it's indeed looking good for him here:
+ 1'03" as 50th at the finish! And that's indeed enough to keep the leader shirt. What a huge day he had yesterday. The GC victory is very well possible!
And what a huge day for Reddit also today: Ma takes the stage and Monfort retains the leader shirt!
Monfort now leading the GC by 25 seconds on Taborre, who did enough to defend his 2nd place! Ma moving up to 3rd with 33 seconds off his teammate Monfort. Big big two days for Team Reddit.
Dennis moves up to 4th (38sec) ahead of Grabovski (38sec) and a strong Sepulveda (44sec).. Mottin 7th ahead of Roe, Tennant, Cruz and a rather disappointing Reus as 11th. Mullen (16th) and Hofer (18th) as maybe the biggest disappointments today. They definitely should have aimed for at least a Top-10 in the GC here.
Anderson dropping from 3rd to 23rd, Meyer the best sprinters as 25th (+ 1.10).. the next two flat stages are less challenging, but of course we could have crosswinds again.
