Forza Titani | FM17 Story
Game Setup:
- Game: Football Manager 17
- Club: San Marino Calcio
- Disable player attribute masking
- Sports Director mode (a.k.a. the "Ralf Rangnick" ): I will manage the roster (transfers, contracts, staff) but for the most time i will go on holiday for the actual games so my assistant manager will have control over the season. I might take over at times for a few games but most of the first decade of this save I won't control the team line-ups and tactics.
- I aim to take control over the national team at a later point
- Loaded leagues: Italian Serie A-D & a huge number of players loaded from other leagues & continents

Chapter 1 | San Marino Calcio Club Presentation | 2016/17 |
Spoiler Note: I only decided that i want to make this a story some time into the save so i have to improvise a bit with screens for the first couple of updates. e.g. the team presentation in this post came from a new save so there might have been some changes to my save.
San Marino Calcio is a semi-professional club based in San Marino. Unlike other San Marinese clubs that play in a Sanmarinese league, San Marino Calcio (nicknamed "Titani" ) plays in the Italian league system and is currently in Serie D. Our target has to be to turn professional as soon as possible and a quick first promotion to Serie C is a key factor for any potential future success. Luckily, we're predicted to finish 2nd so with a few good transfers we look good for an immediate promotion.
The team finished the previous season 4th and has been in Serie C in 2005-2007 and in 2012-2015 which makes us arguably one of the bigger teams in our division. The best league finish in club history was a 10th place in 12/13.
For a fourth division team the facilities look solid with a 5,500 all-seater, average training facilities and adequate junior coaching but upgrading this set-up a lot will be one of our key focus points for the next decade in the hope of developing better Sanmarinese players. We will have to be a club that signs and develops young talents to make an impact due to not being attractive enough for star signings for quite some time. Good facilities will be important in that regard as well.
This is our team right now. It’s a young squad which is necessary in Serie D due to squad registration rules (more for that in the next update). The team looks already quite good but with the absolute will to promote to Serie C in the first season I will try to strengthen it as much as possible. I have a bit of wage budget left but I also intend to use loans to improve short-term. The screen suggests lots of potential but most of them are players who could only be well suited to Serie C in a couple of years so they likely will never be a real factor for us. One notable negative is the lack of Sanmarinese players. We have striker Mattia Stefanelli loaned out and a couple of Sanmarinese players in our youth teams but not a single Sanmarinese player is close to our first team. Only Stefanelli plays in the San Marino NT. This is something which hopefully looks a bit different within a decade.
Club Goals till 2099:
- Promote to Serie A
- Qualify for an European competition
- Win Italian Cup
- Win Serie A
- Win Champions League
- Win Serie A without non-Sanmarinese players
- Win Champions League without non-Sanmarinese players

Yeah exactly. Loved that challenge when i read it elsewhere and being a couple of years into the save this is one of my favourite saves I've ever had. Getting to 2033 is impressive already
Thanks for your comment

Had a great career on FM17 with Parma, moving them from Serie C upto A and beyond. Some of those lower leagues can be very competitive and very challenging fun!

Abishek - awesome
TMM - starting in the lower leagues of a major country is my preferred set-up for careers. My favourite saves have been one where i took Portsmouth from League 2 to European competitions and one where i took Paderborn from 2.Bundesliga underdog to the Bundesliga title.

I've got a lot of love for the San Marino Challenge, always had fun with it, so much so that I ended up creating and adding the National League on a couple of the older games. Best I ever managed was to get Pennarossa, one of the Sammarinese league clubs to the Champions League group stage, I think that was a good 15-20 years into the save though.
Lower League saves have been my preference aswell, and I managed to get up to France on the Alphabet Challenge on FM14 but am really struggling with it on this years game, taking 8 seasons to promote to Austria's top division as opposed to the 3 (with a cup win along the way) last time.

I'm not surprised that you like the SM challenge. I've tried it once before but stopped quickly after only a couple of seasons because i switched to a newer FM. Not gonna happen so quickly in this attempt though
I dont like to change clubs during a career. I mostly pick a club and stay with it until i get fired or lose motivation and then start a new save with a new club. Dont think i could ever attempt the Alphabet challenge although it surely is nice to get to know differents leagues and clubs.

Jandal - Great to hear!
Chapter 2 | National Team Presentation | 2016/17 |
World Ranking: 200th
We don't need to look at the world ranking to see how bad the national team has been but being tied with the Turks and Caicos Islands is probably the perfect description of being shit. A short look at some statistics show where the national team starts:
135 matches,
1 win, 4 draws. 130 losses
21:582 goals
Highest victory:
San Marino 1:0 Liechtenstein
(Serravalle, San Marino; 28.04.2004)
Highest loss
San Marino 0:13 Germany
(Serravalle, San Marino; 06.09.2006)
Most Capped Player
Andy Selva (72)
All-Time Top Goalscorer
Andy Selva (8)
To call any Sanmarinese footballer a star is a bad joke in itself but these are the best footballers in our small country right now:
Elia Benedettini is our young starting goalkeeper and he is the only professional player coming from our country. The former San Marino Calcio talent is playing for Serie B side Novara as their backup keeper and would go on to play seven matches in the 2016/17 season. With the young age of 21 he could be in the squad selection for quite some time.
He is THE legend in San Marino. Nobody has earned more caps for our country and nobody has scored more goals for the country. However, he won't be part of our future as his age is already on the wrong side of 40.
Vitaioli plays even below Serie D level in the Italian football pyramide but he is probably the most useful player outside of our goalkeeper. He is quite versatile and has the best chances to overtake Andy Selva as record player. This is the type of player that is already a massive upgrade over the current starters. However, better players will be necessary if the team wants to become competitive and San Marino Calcio will have to be the club to produce them.
New San Marino Calcio manager Johnny Football didnt want to take control over the national team until it isnt the only question how many goals a country like Cyprus or Luxembourg will score against them so Pierangelo Manzaroli will stay manager for now.
National Team Goals till 2099:
- Qualify for a major tournament
- Win the European Championships
- Become the number 1 ranked national team in the world
- Win the World Cup

Funny to see a FM story just coming up when I decided to play FM17 after some years without playing! Already screw the idea though
Good luck. Will certainly stop by at some point.

Chapter 3 | Serie D League Rules | 2016/17 |
Not everyone is familiar with the league system in Italian lower league football so a quick presentation of Serie D rules might make sense. The Serie D is divided into 9 groups with 18 teams each and every team is played twice. The top team promotes and the 2nd to 5th teams qualify for promotion playoffs. Further rules:
Match Day squads
- There must be at least 4 U20 players in the first 11
- There must be at least 3 U19 players in the first 11
- There must be at least 1 U18 player in the first 11
- 9 subs named, at most 3 used
- Maximum of 8 loan players in match squad
Others
- Maximum of 2 Non-EU players
- Minimum wage for full time players: 17,500€ p/a
Extra Time will include ideas about my strategy in building the club and random thoughts. Most of the time it will be about the topic of the post itself, sometimes it will be out of context.
# Securing immediate promotion has to be key so we think short-term in player evaluation for now. If a player is 35 but will help us this season I'll not hesitate to sign him.
# The board gave us quite a bit of wage budget but our bank account is empty (-170k) and loan players are better and cheaper than most available players. Only a few key signings or very cheap role players will be signed permanently.
# We aim to save as much money as possible for facility upgrades.
# All of our players are on part-time contracts so the minimum wage isnt valid for us
# I don't like the look of our U18/U19/20 players so those spaces will mostly be filled with loan players
# We have an affliation with Cesena which will be used a lot to bring in loan players

Chapter 4 | 2016/17 Team | 2016/17 |
"Loans, slow wingers and German“
Spoiler I will change the reporting format for future seasons but i couldn’t figure out a better way to present the first season without a pre-season safegame. From next season on, I intend to give a pre-season team preview, midseason update and end of season post at the very least. Feedback for what you want to see ofc much appreciated.
Despite struggling to sell players because nobody was interested i had a few departures: i cancelled all incoming loans where we had to pay some wage. As mentioned in the previous update i looked to make quite a few additions to the squad. Lots of loanees were brought in and also a couple of free transfers. The roster was quite large but i prefered to give my assistant a squad with good depth and at least two players for each position so that he would not have to improvise too much in case of injuries and the loan player didnt cost anything. Also six loan players were only added in the winter to bolster our push for promotion which made the team look bigger than it was.
# Many updates give you two options for how detailed the information are:
option 1: look at key moves and key players in this thread
option 2: open the imgur album for a complete overview (link below)
In this thread i'll only present some key players. For a more complete overview click on the link below:
Complete team overview
On loan from Sassuolo, Ravanelli was an absolute corner stone of our defense. He's got everything you wish for a central defender with pace, size, the defensive trifecta (tackling, marking, positioning), mental stats. He's well suited to Serie C football and was a beast in Serie D. He played every league game this season and I was super glad when i could extent his loan for 2018.
Maleh is a well rounded offensive minded playmaker who excels with great passes and a good understanding of the game. 3 goals, 9 assistant and a 7.21 grade are awesome from a central mid who often was used as box-to-box midfielder by my assistant manager despite not being particularly suited to that role.
Sgrigna has been an absolute beast for us. The veteran attacking midfielder was mainly used as inside forward on the wings. His pace might be super low at this point but his technical skills are nearly unmatched in the division. Whenever the ball touched his feet the opponent knew it was going to be dangerous. With 11 goals and 11 assists he was one of the key drivers of our succesful season.
Half Brazil, half Italian, Bondi looks quite similar to Sgrigna and he often played as winger on the left attacking side for us. Also not the quickest player his technical skills were very useful for us and helped to set our striker up for goals, goals and even more goals.
The one and only German Pomiro. Playing at Sangiustese (an Italian lower league club) on a non-contract, i found this gem for a free transfer. He's already 27 and he isnt the best rounded player but quickness, off the ball and finishing are key attributes to be a good poacher and scoring goals was his only job. And he absolutely excelled at this throughout the season. 32 goals in 33 games is outstanding and makes him the obvious choice for player of the year.
Full team:

A nice start so far, good to get that first season promotion under your belt, is the squad ready to step up already or do you need to make a few changes to prepare for the higher level? I guess that will likely be in the pre season posts.
I would personally prefer a next season expectations at the end of the season review post to make it clearer how much transfers strengthened the squad and if that and the preseason in general went according to plan or if things changed, e.g. missed targets, found a bargain etc.
And it would be nice if we could get an overview of each youth intake, who the best player is, if there's anyone that you think will make it into the starting lineup, and the best Sammarinese players you bring through, and they're chances of making the national team.
I guess that the youth intake stuff and their progression is hard to do until you catch up with where you are up to but it's something I'd like to see as you progress through the save and as the years go by it would be nice to look back and see if they panned out as expected/ hoped or not.
