Tour of Japan - Stage 6
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_000.png

The Tour of Japan concludes with a flat (crit style) circuit in Tokyo. An almost panflat profile with no real difficulty. And a short one. Surely some managers will see a breakaway taking the stage and with many sprinters being out of the race already, there's definitely a question mark behind Lavoine or Lobato del Valle's chances today. We will find out soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_001.jpg

Like every time in this race, the break of the day is quickly formed - eight riders today, establishing a comfortable 3'30" gap quickly:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Ssabagwanya (showing his polka dot)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Tolhoek
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Georgiev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Passalacqua
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Semple
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Craven
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grossschartner

No minor GC threat in the group.. Craven surely as the best allrounder amongst the escapees.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_002.jpg

We're jumping straight into the crucial moments of the day: with 27km to go, the peloton at least looks interested in chasing the break, that is now 1'25" ahead.

Euskaltel and Garmin, as well as Fablok sharing the work in the chase. Lobato, Giacoppo and Lavoine obviously not willing to just give up on the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_003.jpg

They struggle to finally close the gap though: 3km remaining and the pack is a minute in arrears!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Craven attacks from the leading group now! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Semple tried as well, but he couldn't yet open up a gap. Opposing to Craven, who's acceleration looks strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_004.jpg

Indeed! Craven enters the final 1.7km with a 16 seconds gap on Semple, who finally got a gap between hismelf and his breakaway companions:

Ssabagwanya kicking off the sprint from this group now, with Passalacqua and Mutsumine in the most promising positions.. too late to catch Craven? The gap is quite big at least.

The peloton is further 32 seconds in arrears and it's pretty clear, that they won't catch up to Craven in time. A minor crash happened, with one rider forced to quit the race:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Krizek can't go on.. bad luck on this final day for yesterday's breakaway participant!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_005.jpg

Euskaltel and Fablok setting the trains for Lobato and Lavoine. Also Stacchiotto, Yamamoto, Bole and Brammeier in the mix. Giacoppo a few metres further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_006.jpg

They are indeed to late anyway: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Craven didn't slow down in any way and he crosses the line first! Second consecutive stage-win for Eritel. Apparently, they didn't really miss Van Heerden today!

Semple couldn't hang on and he's also been caught by the breakaway group now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Ssabagwanya takes the 2nd place (26 seconds off Craven) with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Tolhoek sprinting for the final podium place!

Semple totally empty, but yet fighting to at least hold off the nearing peloton! All other early escapees have been swallowed in the meantime..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Semple comes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Lobato del Valle, who wins the bunch sprint for a 5th place on the stage!

Brammeier 6th ahead of Reza, Bole, Yamamoto and Giacoppo as 10th. Ignatiev 13th to collect some minor points towards his green jersey. GC leader Denifl finishing safely in the bunch as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Craven celebrating his solo victory. Two pretty damn good days for Eritel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl the winner of the Tour of Japan 2017 then! Thanks to a huge performance on the climb up Mt Fuji, the premium climber rode to a well deserved overall win today. He's been attentive in the hilly stages as well. He's not amongst those riders, who take wins left and right, but this time, he delivered his team a big GC victory. Well done.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard a strong (and narrow) 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus. They all should be happy with their GC results here, even though Kudus missed out on the podium by less than twenty seconds. His stage-win (and the U25 win) will surely make up for this, though.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche a good 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Cataldo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Roglic then. Kinoshita couldn't repeat his GC podium from last year, but he rode to another stage-win (his second in two years here) and a solid GC result. Meiji with their two leaders inside the Top-8 of the GC: they might have hoped for something better, but it's still a good achievement. Duarte with a solid result as well, given his weakness as a puncheur.

Former race-leader Ignatiev 11th, while the other former race-leader (Dennis) has to settle for an 18th place eventually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ignatiev with a stage-win and the points classification as well. Definitely some very strong first three days for the Russian, who struggled yesterday though. Kwiatkowski (6pts off) and Kudus (12pts) came closer, but they couldn't go past Ignatiev, who had a comfortable lead in the classification on the first three days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Ssabagwanya celebrating his KoM-victory by 6pts on Schlegek and 8pts on Novak/Tanovitichii. With an additional 2nd place in today's final stage, he definitely enjoyed a great race here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/japan/MG17_japan_6_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus a clear U25 winner by more than two minutes on Shikai and five minutes on Schachmann as 3rd.

The team's classification goes to SPAR - Shimano ahead of Eritel and Ferrero. Definitely three teams, which performed pretty well on the key stages here.
