The Tour of Japan kicks off with the traditional prologue - held in Sakai. The big chance for the timetrial specialists to slip into yellow for tomorrow's first (tricky) flat stage:
Dennis as the best prologue specialist, Ignatiev and Viennet as his most dangerous competitors. Also Robert, Hamza, Balloni and Li with a good chance to ride to a stage-win, while Sicard, Shikai, Kwiatkowski and Duarte should be the most promising GC contenders to gain some first seconds on their rivals today.
Viennet has an early start and he sets the first notable best time - which doesn't come as a big surprise. He's 5 seconds faster than Zardini, who's been the best of the earlier starters.
Shikai as the first main GC contender and while he misses out on the best time by just 2 seconds eventually, he's faster than a few other stage contenders:
Rolland + 3 seconds
Oba + 3 seconds as the best local rider so far
Tennant + 5 seconds and rather disappointing
Robert as cycleyorkshire's second promising option and he's doing significally better than Tennant:
new best time, 4 seconds faster than Viennet!
Ovechkin + 6 seconds as provisional 4th
Flens + 7 seconds
Bauer + 7 seconds
Roche + 8 seconds
Teklehaimanot + 8 seconds
Leung next - a future prologue star - shows his talent and delivers today:
5 seconds behind Robert as provisional 3rd at the finish!
Nonaka as the new best local rider, finishing also 5 seconds behind Robert as 4th so far..
Balloni going strong, too:
4 seconds off Robert as new provisional 3rd!
Li has been solid in his timetrial outings most recently and he's doing fine again:
new provisional 3rd, but 4 seconds off the still leading Robert!
Bartl + 5 seconds to finish narrowly behind Leung and Nonaka, a strong effort as well
Dennis on the road now, the favorite for the stage win. The Aussies looks good on the technical parcours through Sakai and it's good news for his team:
2'44" to finish one second faster than his teammate Robert! New provisional leader.
Hamza now, the next promising prologue specialist. Like Dennis, he's looking fine on the road, but:
4 seconds off Dennis as provisional 3rd behind Robert!
Ghyselinck + 5 seconds to finish close behind Li and Balloni
Kwiatkowski as one of the most promising GC contenders:
+ 7 seconds to finish narrowly behind Shikai inside the Top-20 of the stage
Sicard is doing slightly better and his result will be enough for a Top-10 on the stage:
+ 5 seconds to finish behind Balloni, Li and Ghyselinck!
Ignatiev as the last rider on the road - can he beat Dennis eventually?
There's some confusion, when he crosses the line. The unofficial timer shows Ignatiev as the winner with the same time as Dennis..
..but a few moments later, the official results show a different outcome:
Dennis lived up to his favorite role and he takes the prologue with a narrow victory over Ignatiev! His teammate Robert completes a strong result for cycleYorkshire as 3rd.
Tomorrow's flat stage may give some changes though: Serebriakov as the best sprinter today (10 seconds behind Dennis). Chen (12 seconds), Giacoppo (13), Rowe (14), Bole (15) or Lavoine (15) would be in striking distance, if it comes down to the expected bunch sprint then.
