Van Avermaet leads the standings after a stunning ride in the closing stages of the last stage. He needed it, with time trialing being his weak link. The group did help his cause, preferring to conserve energy for today's ITT and limiting their losses with a controlled chase. Whose strategy will pay dividends? Let's find that out.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Predatsch is the first to set a competitive time. 38'42" is his effort at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%202.jpg

Goldstein (Porto - Prio) is much faster though, clocking in with a time of 37'58".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%203.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kovalev is 28" slower, in 2nd place for the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Olman is just 2" down on Goldstein (Porto - Prio) at the first time check. He goes on to clock times which were exactly 2" down on the current leader in the next two time-checks as well! He sits 2nd for the moment.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Ligthart has a decent run to take 4th place, 38" down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aramendia does 7" slower through the first time check. He improves to share the lead at the second time check. And improves even further to take the lead at the finish. His time is 37'56".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col is up next, and while he was slower than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aramendia in the intermediate time-checks, he puts in blistering last section to take the lead by a second!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%207.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Sutterlin is 5" down at the first time-check. Can he improve?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%208.jpg

Yes he can. He shatters the best time. The time to beat now is 37'48".

But he doesn't hold the lead for long! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Durbridge has just come past the finish and swept away the German's time. 37'35" is the new mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%209.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Jungels doesn't have his best day. He is 37" slower to be provisional 8th only.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2010.jpg

But his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel is flying! He is already 6" faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Durbridge at the second time-check!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel improves the best time by 11"! A near-perfect run from the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio rider.

It has started to rain now.

Zmorka (Porto - Prio) takes the brunt of the impact and loses a whopping 1'16" on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel. A bad day and serious bad luck for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schadlich loses 34" at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Hepburn starts badly, being 25" down at the first intermediate and it gets worse for him. His time is down by 1'9".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Campenaerts is strong in the middle sector but loses time in the other two sectors. 40" off the pace for the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Gazelle rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2015.jpg

The rain has stopped.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Vlatos is fastest through the first sector! He is also fastest by 9" at the second time-check!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2016.jpg

But he runs out of steam and loses 4" to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Yatsevich loses small amounts of time in each sector to finish 23" down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel, one time winner of this race, starts off as the stage favourite. But he starts off badly, being 14" down at the first sector. It doesn't get better for him as he ends up 40" off the pace. This has been a bad race for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Malori does better but is still 22" off the best time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2019.jpg

The rain has started again!

We have to wait a long time for the next competitive rider to come through.

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png de Gendt. However, he is not a threat to to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel, ending up 37" down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2020.jpg

The skies have cleared up a little as the final 15 riders start. The rain has also stopped. We will follow all our their rides to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Breen is nowhere close to the best time, losing 2'32" on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Roelandts is further behind, losing 3'5".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Vanspeybrouck is worse still at 3'30".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Van Zyl is competitive, if not outstanding. 1'28" down for the RBC, and he is likely to move up a couple of places in the GC today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb loses 2'37".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van der Velde is slightly better, 2'7" is his deficit.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom is the first of the top 15 to pose a threat to the TT specialists. He loses 15" at the split and a further 11" at the second split. He has an excellent final sector to end up 28" behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel and in provisional 9th place on the stage. He too is sure to move up in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Baugnies loses 3'21" on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Trentin is slower still at 3'42".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2028.jpg

The times don't improve as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Summerhill reaches the finish. 3'27" down for the Canadian.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Saber is only slightly better. 2'56" down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gerts is among the better finishers among the GC contenders. He still loses 2'11".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff is 2'28" off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley needs to make up 64" to take the lead, while also not losing too much to have someone else overtake him.

He goes at a steady pace and finishes losing 2'6" on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2032.jpg

The question is how has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Averamet been doing?

The answer - not too good. He was down 1'50" at the first split itself! He is down 3'6" at the second check, meaning he will lose his lead if he loses just 4" in the final sector.

He goes on to lose 54" in the final sector! He is 4' down on Kittel today.

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Marcel Kittel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sam Bewley is the new GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/TONE/TNES5%2034.jpg

Away from our cameras, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kristjan Koren achieved 4th place on stage and moves up to 15th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Avermaet falls to 5th in the GC standings. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom jumped seven spots and is 2nd currently, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gerts, who is having the race of his young professional life! Despite the time losses for the GC contenders, the time gaps created on the last stage means that there isn't too many changes in the top GC positions otherwise. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel is up to 2nd in the Points classification.
