Week 3 starts and the race still is in some kind of GC break. Good for many riders who needed to recover a bit. Good for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling of course as well as it`s realistic to defend the lead for another day. And good for the breakaway as those kind of stages favour the attacking riders regularly.

Today it`s not that different. It`s hillier than the most recent sprint opportunities but might not be as difficult to be ridden that fast to force big gaps.
The main difficulty is the late Cat.1, which probably could have been a Cat.2 only as well and then a long descent and a flat section towards the finish. Hence not easy to attack and remain in front.

Most likely it`s breakaway vs. a bigger chasing group today in which some punchy sprinters might be able to fight for the win.

6 riders in the breakaway. It wasn`t easy to get into it today as many riders wanted. The following six then succeeded:

The Reddit rider Manfredi being the best placed as 26th and 22'05 down. More interesting his attempt to improve in the U25 ranking, where he sits in 4th place and just 4'35 behind. Sakalour, Hadi and Quintana surely be warned.

Behind MOL, Newton, UBS and Haute Route are working.

Latest team not for their GC rider Pinot it seems, who sits in 4th position.

Apparently they wanted to be part of the break and now they decided to send pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Girdlestone on the hunt.
88km to go and 3'20 the gap for him. But not bad. Only took him 8 km to reach them...stunning.

But while this is good news for the team, some bad one at the same time. Their helper pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Anguilet crashed but was able to get back into the peloton again.

Bookwalter being active and winning both Cat.3 competitions while behind him a nice mix of riders take the remaining points.

35km to go and this means we hit the long climb. 10,5 km with an average slope of 5,5%. Not that difficult but surely something that can hurt on day 15.
Aregger, Ivars and Schir for UBS and Rybalkin and Stancu for MOL are chasing. The break is just 1'45 ahead and almost in sight.

Not a lot happened on the climb but in fact the break did split into pieces and the first couple of riders actually gained some time on a slow peloton, where the teams surely didn`t go all in. UBS just wanted to avoid attacks and also MOL wasn`t working much.
Löbau started to help out here and there but was far from going fast really.

In the break though we now have a solo rider in the lead as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Jim attacked and is now 18s ahead of the trio Ebsen, Bookwalter and Offredo.

Manfredi and Girdlestone follow another 45s later while Delgerbayar is just seconds ahead of the peloton.

Barguil actually tried to "attack" for the last 2 points as Delgerbayar was caught just in time. But he wasn`t able to pass chasing rider Rybalkin on the final meter.

Bookwalter hence the big KoM winner today collecting 24 points in total, which sees him moving up to 52 and hence 2nd position behind Barguil at 58 pts.

11km to go and Jim kept his 20s lead over the following trio.

The peloton though came closer. 1'37 and hence gained ~1min on the way down and now about to catch Manfredi/Girdlestone.

The trio didn`t work together very well once it was flat and just like now with 3,5km to go where Offredo attacks, they worked against each other.

This means that Jim, who rode a steady and fast pace gained half a minute and is likely todays stage winner.

Also the peloton isn`t really coming closer. Still 1'35 to Jim and 45s to the trio.

A group of ~20 riders though led by UBS have opened a gap and some big names are behind such as Berhane, Warbasse, Chamorro, Atapuma.

Though UBS is actually also chasing in the later group with Goncalves and Ramos Ticona and hence not really getting the chance to gain time on some.

In the end Jim wins 22s ahead of Offredo, who was rewarded for his late attack. Nothing surprising though after the descent and the first kilometers on the flat as the winner became clear.

Bookwalter for 3rd ahead of Ebsen and actually just ahead of the peloton where De Marchi, Campero and Fraile were coming over the line first. And as said, all the "dropped" riders came back and were lucky.
