Tour of Northern Europe Stage 4
Name COB ACC Bewley 83 83 Summerhill 83 73 Van Avermaet 82 78 Blythe 82 73 Senechal 82 74 Vanspeybrouck 82 69 Trentin 81 76 Zepuntke 81 64 Baugnies 80 73 Vanmarcke 80 72 Daniel 80 72
We've had three different GC leaders after each stage of this race so far, and with Degenkolb being the current leader, it looks like that trend is likely to continue if this stage goes according to plan. Krostoff in 2nd and Bewley in 3rd look to be the favourites to take up the GC lead at he end of this stage. Degenkolb will need to ride out of his skin to protect his position!
50 km/hr winds greet us at the start-line.
Eight riders get away forming the break of the day.
Thurau
Declerq
Vanmarcke
Ferreira (Porto - Prio)
De Backer
Randrianambinina
Tharuka
Vermeltfoort
Declerq and Vanmarcke are very strong cobbles riders and it is surprising that the pack have let them go. They're both just over seven minutes down in the GC.
Vermeltfoort leads the KOM standings, with Ferreira (Porto - Prio) second. The latter is strong on the cobbles too!
Vermeltfoort wins the only KOM sprint of the day to extend his lead at the top of that standing. Ferreira (Porto - Prio) is 2nd. De Backer is 3rd.
Vermeltfoort also wins the first intermediate sprint, ahead of De Backer and Declerq.
The peloton reach the first cobbled section, all together. 70 km to go.
Lots of riders have been dropped over the first couple of cobbled sections, including stage 3 winner David. No other big names are in trouble so far.
De Backer, Tharuka, Vermeltfoort is the order through the second intermediate sprint. Their lead is 1'57".
39 km to go. Vanmarcke, De Backer, Declerq and Ferreira (Porto - Prio) are what's left at the front of the race. Tharuka, in the background, is getting distanced. Thurau and Randrianambinina are already caught by the pack.
The pack hit the next cobbled sector just a kilometer later and there's a split! Ciolek, Bakelants, Gastauer, Howard, Boivin, Rosskopf, Coppel, Vakoc, McCarthy, Aberasturi, Boeckmans,
De Bie, Guerao, Stallaert, Daniel, Furdi, Nepomnyachsniy, Lander, Kelderman and Weber, among others, are all on the wrong side of the split.
The situation with the front three groups is as follows with 30 km to go:
E1 -> Vanmarcke, De Backer, Declerq, Ferreira (Porto - Prio)
E2 (1'31" ) -> Bewley, Saber, Van Avermaet, Boom, Trentin, Kristoff, Kluge, Gerts, Roelandts, Degenkolb
E3 (1'59" ) -> Dakteris, Fenn, Senechal, Hnik
25 km left now. Senechal and Fenn are back in the first chase group. So is Stallaert, who has jumped up a couple of groups in the last 5 km.
Degenkolb is dropped 3 km later! It looks like his brave ride to protect his jersey has finally come to an end.
Nooytens crashes from the front group, which has swelled in size again. He just missed that rock on the side of the road!
Degenkolb is back in the front group. Declerq and De Backer have been caught from the break.
Degenkolb's defiance does not last as he's dropped again with 19 km left. He has no teammates around for support.
De Backer, Van Zyl, Taubel, Fenn, Potts, Van der Velde, Kluge and Maes form the second chase group behind the Bewley group. The break have two riders left at the front - Vanmarcke and Ferreira (Porto - Prio).
Van Avermaet and Senechal attack with 17 km to go.
14 km left. Van Avermaet catches the break. Senechal lags by 16". The group behind is 1'24" behind the leaders and consists of
Bewley
Saber
Boom
Breen
Stallaert
Kristoff
Summerhill
Zepuntke
Lampaert
Gerts
Trentin
Baugnies
Roelandts
De Backer (with still enough energy to catch up from the next group despite having been in the break earlier)
Van Averamet attacks agian just as Senechal makes contact with the lead group. No one has an answer to the Belgian. 12 km to go.
10 km left for Van Averamet. The gap to the next group is 1'27".
And now 5km left for the Evonik rider. The break has been caught by the chasing group but they've slowed down considerably. The gap is up to 2'36"!
Van Avermaet goes past the kilometer banner. The group behind has Bewley, Senechal, Vanmarcke, Ferreira (Porto - Prio), Saber, Summerhill, Stallaert, Zepuntke, Breen, Lampaert, Boom, Gerts, Kristoff, Trentin and Baugnies. They seem content to ride at their own pace to the line.
An easy win for Van Avermaet in the end! He trailed Kristoff and Bewley by 1'30" and 1'20" respectively. He will surely take the leader's jersey tonight, but the question remains by how much?
Lampaert is dropped with 2 km to go for the chase group.
They ride in formation till the kilometer banner and then start sprinting!
Bewley leads with 400 meters to go. Saber, Stallaert, Kristoff and Trentin is the order behind.
Bewley claims 2nd with Saber in 3rd.
Stallaert is 4th and Kristoff is 5th.
Trentin is 6th. Boom is 7th.
Senechal, Baugnies and Summerhill complete the top 10. Gerts and Vanmarcke are next.
Ferreira (Porto - Prio) and Zepuntke are 13th and 14th. Breen completes the top 15.
Vanspeybrouck is 16th, ahead of Lampaert.
Van Avermaet takes the stage win and the leader's jersey.
Van Avermaet gains 2'15" on the stage to lead the GC by more than a minute. Bewley jumps above Kristoff by virtue of bonus seconds. Degenkolb lost 7' on the stage to fall to 11th in the GC. Bewley leads the Points standings. Vermeltfoort and Gerts continue to lead the KOM and U25 standings respectively. Aker now lead the team standings. 12 riders finished outside the time limit!
