Tour of Britain - Stage 8
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_000.png

The final stage of the Tour of Britain is set to begin and the scenery couldn't fit any better: a circuit race through the centre of London. Flat as flat can be, with a total amount of 200km. Only the second flat stage in the eight days here and of course the sprinters would love to fight for line honours: Castaneda did dominate the first bunch sprint decision a few days ago and he should be the favorite again. If it comes down to a bunch sprint, of course. The ever dangerous final-stage-breakaway is definitely alarming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_001.jpg

And the 7 riders, who will try to be this dangerous breakaway, have been found quickly:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hollenstein (GC's 31st + 12.16 as best placed)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Partridge
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Hofstede
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Koch
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Lampier
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Ssabagwanya

They build a lead up to 3 minutes halfway through the stage, with teams like In-n-Out, WCC and Löbauer controlling the gap for most of the time..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png The Balkan Project took over the charge with still WCC and now Wiggle showing some support in the chase. The gap is down to 1'23" with now 27km remaining. Obviously, some sprinter teams show less interest in allowing the breakaway to stay clear..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_003.jpg

Anyway, the situation hasn't changed much afterwards and with now just 4km to go for the breakaway group, the peloton is still about a minute in arrears! It's looking better and better for the escaping group to survive:

The crowd is getting louder, as they see local hero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Partridge trying to solo away from the group now!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Lampier - another Brit - as the first jumping behind and so do the other 5 riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_004.jpg

The escapees are already inside the final 1.5km of the stage and Partridge struggles to get away, with Lampier closing the gap now!

The bunch sprint is about to be kicked off as well, but the disadvantage is still at 48 seconds:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Angarita

Plus those three WCC domestiques Restrepo, Koshevoy and Visconti - who are slowing down now though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_005.jpg

800metres to go for the escaping group, that is still 47 seconds ahead: the stage-win will go to one of them!

Lampier moved to the front now with Partridge cracking! Hollenstein trying to follow, Vila and Hofstede seem to be out of reach..

Ssabagwanya and Koch are further 12 seconds behind now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_006.jpg

Lay/Castaneda enter the final kilometre and they will realize, that they are coming too late today:

Mezgec, Vanderaerden, Horton, Dabkowski, Jones, Giacoppo somewhere behind.. Belletti, Angarita even further down the line..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_007.jpg

Lampier holding on this advantage with Hollenstein not being able to close the gap..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Lampier takes this stage through London! A big victory for himself, winning a stage in front of such a big crowd - on home soil as well. It's the second stage-win for cycleYorkshire after Dennis took the timetrial on third day. A nice consolation price for Dennis losing all GC ambitions in the first two days of the tour. Which should still hurt, of course.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hollenstein a clear 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Partridge as 5th. The latter gave it a go, but totally cracked on the final few hundred metres.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Ssabagwanya managed to finish ahead of the nearing pack as well.. opposing to Koch..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Lay wins the bunch sprint for today's 7th place ahead of Vanderaerden, Castaneda and breakaway rider Koch. Giacoppo and Angarita ahead of Mezgec then, something that doesn't really matter anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_010.jpg

All that matters for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben is the GC-victory! With two stage-wins and taking the points classification (as well as the team's classification), this has been a huge tour for van der Hugenhaben and his team. With also Reus wearing yellow for one day, they should expect a huge points haul coming in.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort completing the podium ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss. The latter once again proving that he can always be a force on this level, even though he didn't come away with a stage-victory. Opposing to Roux, who took the opening stage and who looked so strong for a couple of days. The ITT definitely hurt, but he came back strong - until his unlucky crash two days ago. Xero really not amongst the most luckiest teams this season.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png R Galindo completing the Top-10: certainly some strong results for the first three and the latter. While Gilbert may feel, that he could have done better if he had done better in the last two hilly stages. With Cunego adding a solid 13th place in the GC, Repsol will get away with something though.

Vichot 11th ahead of Khripta, Cunego, former race-leader Reus and Grippo as 15th. A rather disappointing race for local favorite Diggle (24th), who obviously rode under Roux's captaincy though. A few other riders dropped off previously gained GC positions, like Roe (26th) - who ranked 10th after the timetrial. Of course, we have to remember Pellaud as the unluckiest rider here: crashing out of the race as 2nd in the GC (and a comfortable U25 leader) is surely amongst the worst case scenarios.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi with a commanding KoM-victory ahead of Hofer and Rocchetti, with stage-winner Panayotov a narrow 4th in the classification. Pirazzi with an aggressive race throughout the week here and he also came 2nd in the stage, that Panayotov eventually had won.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_8_012.jpg

It hasn't been a special race for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk, who finishes 23rd in the GC with his teammate Kebede as the clearly better performer for Campari. The victory in the U25 classification has to be considered a lucky one, since Pellaud wouldn't have been beaten if it wasn't for him to crash out of the race. Anyway, a nice jersey for his palmares nevertheless.

And that's it from the Tour of Britain 2017. A well deserved overall winner, a nice mix of stage winners, a truly unlucky crash victim and an interesting battle for the GC podium. The best puncheurs delivered, which is always good news for their respective teams. See you again next year.
