Name HIL STA RES REC ACC Hagen 85 81 74 72 79 Ponzi 84 77 72 76 80 Bobridge 83 74 74 69 80 Skujins 83 80 77 73 76 Van Stayen 79 76 71 80 83 Ginanni 83 78 78 76 74 Trofimov 82 79 77 77 75 Gastauer 82 78 70 68 76 Froome 82 77 73 72 75
With Ponzi leading by a small margin and the rest of the favourites all together, could this stage turn into a one vs all situation? Maybe, but that won't be favourable for everyone. Right now, it's too close to call regarding who will have the leader's jersey tonight. Let's just hope the field lives up to their billing.
A lone breakaway rider, Feillu, is off. he is just 1'12" down in the GC.
The pack chase him furiously, knowing his small gap could mean potential disaster for the favourites.
Haas and KOM leader Van Zyl attack. They reach Feillu to form the break of the day. The pack surprisingly back off.
Van Zyl wins the first KOM sprint further extending his lead at the top of the standings. Haas and Feillu is the order behind the RBC rider.
Bouhanni is dropped early again, similar to what happened on the last stage.
The first intermediate sprint is placed on an incline! Feillu wins it, ahead of Haas and Van Zyl. They have a 3'26" lead to the pack. Feillu is the virtual GC leader by a comfortable margin.
60 km left for the peloton and they trail by 2'49". Gazelle, Vesuvio, Grieg, Tinkoff and Hugo have all sent riders to do some work.
It is hard to spot Ponzi in the Hugo Boss colours and the leader's jersey! But he's there in about 10th position.
Van Zyl also wins the second intermediate KOM sprint. Haas is 2nd and Feillu is 3rd.
A crash took place as the breakaway was passing through the KOM point. Ewan, Howard and Boivin were the big names involved.
Riders have started getting dropped because of the pack's high pace.
Gazelle lead the peloton forward with 35 km to go. The gap to the break is 1'15".
Feillu is dropped by the break...
...and is caught by the pack soon after.
The pack splits up with most of the sprinters caught in the second group. There is no let up to this relentless pace!
The peloton catch the break with 25 km to go.
Mudarra, Silva and Siskevicius is the order through the second intermediate sprint.
Waeytens, Scheit, Acevedo and Simon Yates are among the 12 riders dropped with 22 km to go.
94 riders still remain in the peloton.
2 km later, 30 more riders are shed by the pack including Kristoff and Ewan.
10 km to go. Smirnovs pacing the pack. Gazelle have disappeared from the front.
61 riders remain in the peloton with 6 km left. We are on the final climb now.
5 km. Acceleration from Hagen and Gastauer. Ponzi is not in a good position to counter.
4 km to go and the situation at the front is as follows:
E1 -> Hagen, Gastauer
E2 (9" ) -> Skuijns, Trofimov, Ponzi, Vakoc, Van Staeyen, Furdi, Bobridge, Ginanni
E3 (38" ) -> Froome
Another kilometer later, Skuijns has caught up to Hagen and Gastauer. Froome has moved up to the second group.
The third group now has Borges (Porto - Prio) and Beltran 46" behind the leaders. The peloton is a further 30" behind.
2.5 km left. The first group remains the same but the second group has now split. There is further reorganizing among the riders:
E1 -> Hagen, Gastauer, Skuijns
E2 (18" ) -> Trofimov, Bobridge, Ponzi
E3 (26" ) -> Vakoc
E4 (32" ) -> Ginanni, Froome
E5 (53" ) -> Van Staeyen, Beltran, Furdi, Borges (Porto - Prio)
Hagen attacks with 1.5 km to go. Skuijns leads the chase. Ponzi and Trofimov look tired but Bobridge and Gastauer still looks fresh.
The situation is still the same as we go past the kilometer banner.
A look at where everyone is at various points on the hill.
Skuijns and Bobridge leave the others behind with one last push to catch Hagen. 600 meters to go.
Hagen puts in one final acceleration and effectively puts himself out of reach of the chasers. Is this also the push for the GC win? Skuijns is feeling the pinch as Bobridge looks much fresher.
Hagen wins in Ukraine! He dominated that final climb. The timer now starts as to how far back Ponzi is. Hagen has to make up 40 seconds, including time bonuses, to take the lead.
Bobridge caps off a good ride to claim 2nd. Skuijns is 3rd, Trofimov is 4th and Ponzi is 5th. This group loses 17" to Hagen, which is small enough for Ponzi to hold on to his GC lead!
Gastauer lost some ground at the end. He hangs on to 6th ahead of Froome.
Ginnani is 8th and Vakoc is 9th.
Beltran completes the top 10 with Borges (Porto - Prio) 11th.
Barbin finishes in a lonely 12th.
Pichon, Tsatevich and Mohoric complete the top 15.
Van Staeyen is 16th with Furdi 17th.
Ion Izagirre is 18th, ahead of Dyrnes.
Vanendert pips Sushemoin to 20th.
Today's winner - Edvald Boasson Hagen.
Spoiler
Missed taking the picture in the stage winner's podium!
Hagen's victory margin was only 2" short of Ponzi's overall time, who retains the GC lead. As the picture above shows, Hagen takes the lead in the Points classification. Van Zyl puts the KOM classification to bed with two stages still remaining. Vakoc now leads the U25 standings. Evonik still lead the team standings. Van Staeyen drops from 4th to 16th in the GC. Borges (Porto - Prio) also falls from 3rd to 11th. Bobridge moves up to 4th.
