Tour of Britain - Stage 7
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_000.png

Last hilly stage and the peloton will go from Dorking towards a finishing loop featuring the 'Box Hill' climbg, that has to be ridden seven times: Box Hill is one of Britain’s most iconic climbs. The statistics don’t look particularly impressive – 2.5 km with an average gradient of 5%, for a mere 129m height gain. If Box hill was located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, it would barely mention a footnote. But, given it’s accessibility and closeness to London, it has become a popular test for every type of cyclist.

Tricky weather conditions with rain and crosswinds between 15-30kmh add another challenge. It may not be the toughest hilly contest of the race, but of course it's yet another opportunity to fight for the prime GC positions.

Hugenhaben however brought himself into a comfortable position with two stage-wins in the last two days. The battle for the GC podium is still close though: Chaves, Roux, Monfort and Wyss all within less than a minute - surely one of them will try and go with an attack today.

The break of the day is quickly formed today - 4 riders going clear with the comfortable KoM leader making the group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi (GC's 28th + 10.46, KoM leader)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Thomson (GC's 40th + 13.39)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Shaw
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Rocchetti

Let's keep the first news short: Pirazzi would be the only one taking care of the three mountain sprints later in the stage, taking them all to seal the KoM victory (if he finishes the race, of course):

Provisional KoM: Pirazzi 142, Hofer 68, Rocchetti 60

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_002.jpg

A crash early into the stage, a moment of shock for some GC contenders:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Cunego (GC's 13th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Haavardsholm (GC's 16th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming (GC's 19th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Marentes (GC's 27th)

They would be all back into the peloton soon after the crash, but as always, the question remains, if they will suffer later into the stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_003.jpg

We're going straight into the final 20km of the race now: the Box Hill hasn't done any bigger impact yet, with the peloton still at 165 riders with 18.5km to go.

Reddit and Kulczyk amongst the most active teams in the chase of the breakaway, that has already been caught now:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Rocchetti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk now leading the bunch onto the penultimate climb up the Box Hill..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_004.jpg

At the top of this climb (16.5km to go), we see the first bigger attacks of the day then:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Othman
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort trying to follow as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kratochvila though as the main support for Hugenhaben and he's pulling the attackers back on the following the descent! The peloton remains strong in numbers, 140 riders still there..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Gradek joining Kratochvila for the pace setting now: 8.5km remaining..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_006.jpg

No further attacks until the final 3km of the stage then: the pack enters the Box Hill for the last time, hitting the steepest sector with slopes up to 7.5% now. Still a big group, but it's obviously stretched now - with positioning yet again becoming a key for any stage-success:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kratochvila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Diggle - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png R Galindo - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Othman - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Khripta
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_007.jpg

The group now goes into pieces with three riders attacking at the 2km mark:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort

The battle for the final podium places is on!

17 riders in the group behind them, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png R Galindo trying to follow: Kebede, Kratochvila/Hugenhaben, Taborre, Lietaer, Khripta ahead of Gilbert/Vichot!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_008.jpg

1.3km remaining and the trio stays clear with a 8 seconds gap on Galindo, who's now at the front of a 4-men-group, that is going clear from the main group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png R Galindo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre about 10 seconds ahead of group Hugenhaben!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Khripta at the front of this group, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kratochvila ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss! Also Vichot and Diggle not far off and given the latest gaps with just a kilometre to go, there's no need to panic for Hugenhaben so far:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_011.jpg

The first two groups come together with now just 700metres to go, holding on to a 24 seconds gap on group Hugenhaben, who's still having a great support with Kratochvila:

Roux still ahead, but Monfort is trying to go past him when he's kicking off his sprint!

Chaves next and there's still a small gap on Kebede, Lietaer, Galino and Taborre..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_012.jpg

Hugenhaben looking good to defend yellow without any drama yet: the gap is too small to be of any concerne for the man in yellow.

Wyss, Vichot, Khripta, Gilbert, Diggle, Finetto, Othman, Bratashcuk, Costa, Squire and Cunego on the further positions..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_013.jpg

Back to the front, where the line is approaching:

Monfort indeed going past Roux, who can't match his speed! Chaves catching up to Roux with also Kebede making up some ground now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort wins on Box Hill though! Being just 10 seconds off GC's 3rd Roux prior to the stage, that will make for some crucial bonifications!

Even more since pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves outsprints Roux to finish 2nd on the day, finishing with the same time as Roux!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede a strong 3rd with quite an impressive sprint here..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png R Galindo - they are all finishing with the same time as the stage winner. A good effort from Roux after yesterday's crash, but quite an unlucky 4th place after being one of the most aggressive favorites today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_016.jpg

+ 20" for group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss leading the 12-men-group as 8th at the finish..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot 9th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kratochvila and Hugenhaben.

Cunego 44 seconds off Monfort as 20th, a group with Haavardsholm, Grippo, Reus comes in at 1.04 eventually..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_7_017.jpg

Monfort today's big winner with a prestigious stage-win and moving up to 3rd in the GC! Chaves did well to maintain his 2nd place, but Roux drops to 4th with now 10 seconds off Monfort. Tomorrow's panflat circuit race through London probably won't lead to any further changes between the GC riders, so Monfort might just have secured an overall podium here.

Wyss still 5th ahead of Taborre, Lietaer, Kebede, Gilbert and Galindo. No bigger changes inside the Top-20 of the GC. Hugenhaben defended his points-lead, Pirazzi secured the KoM-victory to almost 100%.
