The sixth stage of the Tour of Britain goes from Sidmouth to Haytor: a short stage, but another key day for the GC contenders. The uphill finish is the longest of all here and while it doesn't come with such steep slopes as the two hilltop finishes so far, it can surely make a difference.
van der Hugenhaben leading the GC ahead of Pellaud - the strongest duo in yesterday's stage. Roux, Monfort and Chaves as the main challengers for the duo, still within striking distance, if they start to gain back time today. There's still quite a good advantage for Hugenhaben in particular.
13 riders tried to go clear on the first 10km of the stage: Fuglsang, Meersman, Biondo, Diaz Grailler, Zoidl, Grabovski, Magnusson, Jacobsen, Joeaar, Thomson, Sella, Connolly and Chaoufi. In-n-Out though didn't want this group to get away and they were pulled back with 126km to go.
The break of the day was then formed soon after, leading by more than two minutes with now 110km left in the stage:
Fuglsang
Tennant
Meersman
Rocchetti (GC's 60th + 12.57)
Koshevoy
Neither a minor GC threat nor a possible KoM contender.. none of the escapees shows any interest in today's three intermediate sprints and four mountain sprints. It's all about the stage-win.
Rocchetti and Koshevoy as the strongest of the group and as we're now jumping straight into the final 21km of the race (with the last climb prior to the hilltop finish already passed), the duo went clear from their former breakaway companions.
They are leading by 2'40" on the peloton, that is down to 77 riders in the meantime..
A quiet stage so far, but the first big news unfortunatelly come from a nasty fall at the front of the peloton:
Roux goes down and hits the turf badly! The 3rd in the GC going down just at the beginning of the last downhill sector and of course it's a difficult moment with the pack chasing the leading duo with quite a good pace now..
Even worse and terrible news for Pellaud though: the U25 leader and 2nd in the GC rode right behind Roux's wheel and (even though it's not captured on the screenshot) he falls over Roux soon after his crash. Opposing to Roux, who's back on the bike soon - then fighting to get back into the peloton - the race for Pellaud is over! Horrible news and definitely something, we did not want to happen here. He rode such an impressive stage yesterday and now he can't finish the race. Just terrible luck for him and the team.
Roux would have caught back to the rear of the peloton with about 9km remaining - about 14km after his crash! And with the pack being quite stretched (85 riders now), he still had to move to the front of the pack as well..
With now just 3.8km to go, the escaping duo and the bunch (71 riders) have entered the final climb up to Haytor. The gap is down to 34 seconds and it looks like In-n-Out (Kratochvila and Reus as the main chasers now) is about to catch the duo soon!
3.3km remaining and it's now Kratochvila ahead of van der Hugenhaben at the front of the field, just 13 seconds behind Koshevoy/Rocchetti..
Nzeke trying to pull Roux further to the front of the group, where positioning will become a big factor from now on. Quite an effort for Roux after his crash and definitely no ideal situation with the crucial moments yet to come..
2.7km to go and the two escapees are reeled in by Kratochvila! Hugenhaben looking strong, Chaves right behind his wheel now.. a small gap on Bratashcuk and Vichot..
2.3km and still no attacks from the GC contenders.. let's have a lookg at the positions now:
Kratochvila
Koshevoy
vd Hugenhaben - Vichot
Chaves
Bratashcuk - Rocchetti - Wyss
Taborre
Monfort - Lietaer - Kebede
Grippo
Roux - Cunego
R Galindo
Haavardsholm - Schoonbroodt
Godoy
Gilbert a few spots further down the road
Roux not yet at the very front, but he's been fighting hard to make up position after position.. Gilbert not looking too good and surely in a dangerous position, if the first attacks will come soon..
..which happens now with 1.4km to the hilltop:
vd Hugenhaben and Vichot attack!
Chaves following immediately - that may already become the crucial moves here!
The trio opened up a small, but promising gap quickly - with now three more riders attacking from the main group as well:
Wyss, Lietaer and Kebede!
Group Hugenhaben 14 seconds ahead, group Wyss is further 14 seconds ahead of the bigger group Roux/Monfort!
R Galindo at the front of this group, that is down to 18 riders now. The gap on the first two groups is growing though!
Taborre, Grippo, Cunego, Monfort, Roux, Kratochvila, Marcato and Bratashcuk at the front of the group.. Roux though doesn't look like he can respond on the latest attacks and also Monfort not showing any sign of doing so soonish..
The stage-win will go to one of those three in the first group, where GC-leader van der Hugenhaben goes clear with another acceleration and the finish line already approaching:
Vichot with a small advantage over Chaves..
Second consecutive stage-win for vd Hugenhaben, who's been impressive again! With Kratochvila setting a ridicilous strong pace on this climb, the man in yellow would then launch his winning move in the perfect moment. He opened up a good gap on Vichot/Chaves as well - another big step towards the overall victory.
+ 15" for Vichot and Chaves
+ 23" for Kebede, who had a fast finish to go clear from group Wyss
+ 33" for Wyss and Lietaer - both should happy with their result today
+ 47" for group Roux and Monfort then
Taborre (7th) and Grippo finishig ahead of Roux, who surely had some tough luck today. A huge fight to come back though and despite losing crucial seconds, he might have done well enough to limit the damage..
Cunego completing the stage Top-10 ahead of Galindo, Monfort and Koshevoy
+ 1'00" for a strong Marcato
+ 1'07" for Khripta
+ 1'12" for a group with Gilbert, Bratshcuk, Nzeke, Schoonbroodt, Kratochvila, Haavardsholm, Godoy and Rocchetti
+ 2'44" for GC's 9th Reus, who had to work for Hugenhaben today
Two DNFs: the already mentioned Pellaud - who had this terrible terrible fall - and Petrache
This guy is on fire though: van der Hugenhaben with two impressive days to grow his GC-lead to quite a comfortable situation now. With tomorrow's last hilly stage (the "Box Hill" stage - maybe the least challenging of all hilly contests here) as the last real opportunity for his opponents to attack him, Hugenhaben has a comfortable gap of three minutes on Chaves now. With Pellaud crashing out of the race, Chaves goes up to 2nd with Roux and Monfort not too far behind. Wyss 5th in the GC with exactly four minutes off Hugenhaben.
Taborre, Lietaer, Kebede doing pretty well thanks to a good result today, Gilbert dropping a place to 9th ahead of Vichot. Reus down to 14th.
GC's 25th Bratashcuk taking over the U25 lead from Pellaud...
