Tour of Britain - Stage 5
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_000.png

Next hilly stage on the menu and it's the longest of all GC key stages today: 204km from Machynlleth to Caerphilly. Featuring a loop in the final kilometres of the day, where a short but steep climb has to be ridden four times until the riders go downhill into a fast finish.

Hugenhaben leading the GC by 10 seconds on Gilbert and 19 seconds on Reus. Monfort, Chaves and Roux well within striking distance. If stamina comes into play, Hugenhaben will certainly fancy his chances, with also Roux being one of the strongest in this category.

The first attempt of 6 riders going clear from the pack is already the succesfull move for the break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hofer (KoM's 5th with 30pts)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Chaoufi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Jallays
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Kaislavuo (GC + 10.52)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Manfred (GC + 15.56)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Rodríguez (GC + 10.33)

Hofer as the only one going for the early mountain sprints - no real threat for Pirazzi though, at least for today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_002.jpg

With less than 50km to go, the breakaway's advantage (that peaked at five minutes) is down to 2'17" with mainly In-n-Out taking care of the chase so far. Some support from Campari and Kulczyk as well. So far, the peloton looks in control and there's no minor GC threat in the escaping group anyway..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Rodríguez broke clear from the leading group on the first of the final four climbs up 'Caerphilly Mountain': 2.6km in total, average slopes of 7.8%.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Manfred would catch up back again on the second climb - 23km to go, the peloton is only 44 seconds in arrears!

The other escapees have been swallowed by the bunch already, but Hofer did enough to move up to 2nd in the KoM classification:

Provisional KoM: Pirazzi 112, Hofer 68, Panayotov 56, Rodríguez 44, Poorseyedi 42, Manfred 38

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_004.jpg

Third climb, 14.5km to go:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre (GC's 17th) as the first GC contender to attack and he went past Manfred/Rodríguez easily, yet leading by 32" on the duo, that has been joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert (GC's 2nd) in the meantime! Gilbert obviously feeling good to put some pressure on Hugenhaben and with Rodríguez at his side, it's been a tactical move as well.

The peloton though - now led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Diggle - is just 13 seconds behind..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert couldn't stay clear, as the trio was swallowed by the pack at the top of this penultimate climb:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves now trying to go clear with 13.5km to go and Taborre leading by already 51 seconds!

The bunch went into pieces with just 23 riders left in the main group..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_006.jpg

..and a few notable names dropped from that group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming (GC's 7th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Marentes (GC's 8th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot (GC's 9th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Roe (GC'S 11th)

amongst those, who can't follow the pace! This big group of 53 riders is already 52 seconds behind the main group of GC contenders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_007.jpg

Roux/Chaves couldn't go clear from that group neither and as they are soon to hit the final climb of the day, the chasing group with 23 riders - Taborre leading by a minute now - goes as follows:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Bille
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Haavardsholm further 17 seconds

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot another 40 seconds in arrears with now 8km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_008.jpg

7.5km remaining, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre now just 29 seconds ahead with the next attacks in the chasing group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_009.jpg

Halfway through the climb - 6.5km to the finish - we're getting a clearer picture of who's amongst the strongest today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben catching up to
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux can't follow, being 12 seconds behind now

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss have formed a next group, 21 seconds behind Roux!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_010.jpg

Pellaud and van der Hugenhaben drop Taborre at the top of the climb with now 6km remaining!

Roux catches up to Taborre, but they are 24 seconds in arrears now, holding on to a 34 seconds gap on group Chaves/Monfort though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_011.jpg

Chaves trying to set the pace in that chasing group, with Bratshcuk and Monfort hanging on - just like Litaer and Wyss..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_012.jpg

A clear gap to Kebede and a next group, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert as the biggest name in troubles now: he's part of group E5 with also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Reus in serious danger to lose the great GC position(s)!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_013.jpg

The leading duo enters the final 2km of the stage and they have increased the gap on Roux/Taborre to more than a minute now! Quite an impressive ride from Pellaud, but also van der Hugenhaben is on his way to defend yellow the most stylish way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_014.jpg

Roux and Taborre yet trying to accelerate for another time, but they are not far ahead group Chaves/Monfort, that is still at 5 riders and now clearly ahead of a next small group with Grippo, Haavardsholm, Kebede and Othman (45 seconds behind)..

Group Reus/Gilbert further 30 seconds in arrears, already 2'45" behind the leading duo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_015.jpg

And now the sprint for line honours is on: van der Hugenhaben launching it from the leading position..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_016.jpg

..and he holds on to it: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben does not only defend yellow, he also takes this tough stage with probably some valuable time gained on his biggest opponents! He's been on a great form today, very well done.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud obviously the same: a stunning ride for the U25 leader, who will likely improve in the GC as well. A bit unlucky to finish 2nd, but he definitely proved his talent here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_017.jpg

+ 1'38" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux as 3rd, staying clear with a minor gap on the next group

+ 1'47" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort

+ 2'02" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer

+ 2'14" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Haavardsholm as a strong 10th today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_018.jpg

+ 3'05" for a next group with Grippo, Cunego, Dahlberg, Ockeloen, Othman, Kebede, Rodriguez Galindo

+ 3'26" for group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Reus and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert

Quite a big loss for particularly Gilbert. He went for an attack today, but clearly suffered on the final two climbs, finishing 21st on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_019.jpg

+ 4'11" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot, who's another GC contender losing big minutes

+ 4'58" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming

+ 5'10" for a group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Marentes

+ 5'44" for a next group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Roe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_5_020.jpg

A huge step towards the overall victory for van der Hugenhaben, who is now more than two minutes ahead of Roux (3rd), Monfort (4th) and Chaves (5th). Pellaud with a big day as well, as he moves up to 2nd in the GC with 1'26" off the GC leader.

Wyss three minutes behind as 6th, with almost a minute on Taborre, Gilbert (dropping to 8th), Reus (9th) and more than a minute on Lietaer as 10th. Vichot dropping to 14th, Cuming to 19th, Marentes to 21st and Roe to 24th.

Tomorrow's next hilly stage will feature the longest hilltop finish here, even though the slopes ain't as steep as the short uphill finishes we had so far. Still another big stage for the GC contenders, of course.
