Tour of Britain - Stage 4
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_000.png

Fourth day in the tour and we continue with another hilly stage: the Stoke-on-Trent stage. A short, but undulating route, that comes with another short, but steep uphill finish. Just like on the first day, we will probably see a bigger group entering the bottom of this climb, that can create some gaps again.

Reus the new GC-leader and it will be interesting to see, how In-n-Out handles the GC situation with van der Hugenhaben as narrow 2nd. Chaves well withing striking distance and also Roux, though struggling heavily in the timetrial, remains a serious threat, if he continues his climbing form from the previous days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_001.jpg

The break of the day is quickly found - 4 riders going clear early and one ride with a clear mission today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi (KoM leader, GC's 71st + 4.51)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Poorseyedi (GC's 134th + 10.26)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Stannard

Panatoyov though destroys the competition at the first mountain sprint of the day:

KoM#1 (Cat2): Panayotov 10, Poorseyedi 8, Pirazzi 6, Stannard 4, Biondo 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_002.jpg

We're going straight into the final 36km of the stage now: the breakaway group - Stannard got dropped - leading by 2'20" on the peloton, that is slowly narrowing the gap now.

A big crash in the peloton destroys pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Zoidl's ambitiouns here. The GC's 17th won't make it back to the chasing bunch, just like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Juarez (GC's 30th) as the second notable name in the list of those riders involved in the crash..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_003.jpg

A quick summary of the four remaining mountain sprints:

KoM#2 (Cat 1): Pirazzi 16, Panayotov 12, Poorseyedi 10, Stannard 8, Afoa 6
KoM#3 (Cat 2): Pirazzi 10, Panayotov 8, Poorseyedi 6, Stannard 4, Hacecký 2
KoM#4 (Cat 2): Panayotov 10, Pirazzi 8, Poorseyedi 6, Stannard 4, Lloyd 2
KoM#5 (Cat 1): Panayotov 16, Poorseyedi 12, Pirazzi 10, Kossouhourou 8, Ssabagwanya 6

Provisional KoM: Pirazzi 112, Panayotov 56, Poorseyedi 42

The leading trio - as already mentioned - with a 2'24" gap on the pack with 35km remaining..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Davison/Nzeke leading the chase with now 28km to go and the gap being still the same. The peloton is down to 84 riders, but the biggest climbs have already been raced now. Still a few short hills until the final flat sector prior to the hilltop finish..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov attack the leading group with now 13km to go! The peloton struggles to close the gap and it's now 2'50" in arrears. It looks like the escapees will have a shot at the stage-win, with Pirazzi just being a minor GC threat at this point.

Poorseyedi can't follow the attack and will get drop from this move..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_006.jpg

12km to go for the pack now and on the last ascent before they go down to the finish, we have the first big attack today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux goes! It's time for him to put some pressure on Reus/Hugenhaben, even though it's a tough challenge with a 12km flat sector ahead..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot jumped behind and bridges across Roux with now only 5km to go! They got a gap, but it's at just 15 seconds with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire now leading the chase in order to pull the duo back!

Panayotov/Pirazzi now 2'20" ahead and Poorseyedi is about 1'40" in front of th Roux/Vichot..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_008.jpg

The stage-win will go to either Panayotov, who's the first to kick off the sprint with 800metres to go, and Pirazzi. They're on the final climb and Panayotov's kick looks good.

Roux/Vichot are 1'35" behind, so Pirazzi won't go for an upsetting GC move, it seems..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_009.jpg

Roux and Vichot couldn't stay clear, but the fast pace made for some selection in the bunch with now 1.7km to go for them. A small group of 8 riders got a tiny gap on the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Schoonbroodt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Hardy
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Marcato

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves at the front of the pack, trying to catch up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_010.jpg

Panayotov still ahead after the steepest part close to the finish..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_011.jpg

..for the win: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov takes the stage and that's certainly some fine news for VMP, who have no serious GC contender here. The Bulgarian climber played his strength on this steep climb.

+ 14" for KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi, who did well again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_012.jpg

600metres to go for first group of GC contenders, that is now down to 6 riders with still a small gap on the first chasing group:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Schoonbroodt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben

A strong Gilbert leading the group into the steepest sector now, with Monfort and Roux gaining a small advantage over Vichot! Hugenhaben struggling to hang on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_013.jpg

23 seconds behind, a chasing group with six riders as well:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Hardy
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Marcato
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre

Chaves still fighting to bridge across group Roux, but he will need to do it fast now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_014.jpg

Further 21 seconds down the road, the peloton with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Reus - obviously in danger to lose yellow. Hugenhaben as his team's prime option, which makes sense afterall.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss, Khripta, Bratashcuk, Roe, Galindo, Lietaer amongst those at the front of the group..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_016.jpg

+ 1'18" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Poorseyedi, who comes in as 3rd! The first group of GC contenders came close though:

Gilbert going strong with a small gap on Monfort..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_017.jpg

+ 1'25" pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert

+ 1'32" pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux

+ 1'40" pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud

Gilbert once again with a strong showing and Monfort/Roux did well to gain minor seconds on Hugenhaben! Still not a disastrous result for the latter, who's definitely a threat for yellow now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_018.jpg

+ 1'51" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Schoonbroodt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Kebede

Chaves losing some seconds on his main opponents, but he did well to limit the losses on the final few hundred metres. He certainly hadn't the best position or attention, when the crucial moves happened. U25 leader Pellaud with another solid performance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_019.jpg

+ 2'04" for group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss (13th on the stage) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Reus

Also GC's 10th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Roe amongst those riders losing some seconds on the best GC contenders today. Reus did quite well, but he will surely lose yellow: maybe as to be expected prior to the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/britain/MG17_britain_4_020.jpg

In-n-Out though retains the leader shirt, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png vd Hugenhaben moved up to 1st now! An impressive Gilbert 2nd (10seconds off) ahead of Reus, who dropped to 3rd only. Monfort, Chaves and Roux all within 34 seconds off the race-leader. This should make for some thrilling final four stages here!

Roux leading the points classification with 4pts on Castaneda and 5pts on Gilbert/Pirazzi.
