The ITT today: a 16km parcours from Saighton to Chester. An easy flat course. Obviously, not the longest timetrial, but given the TT weakness of GC leader Roux, there's certainly a chance to attack yellow today. Hugenhaben, Reus and maybe Roe as the most promising GC contenders today: they are well within striking distance on a very good day.
Opposing to Dennis, who lost all GC ambitiouns already. Still a favorite for the stage-win, just like Stannard/Tennant, Mullen, Hofer, Kreuziger or Grabovski and some other specialists.
Stannard with an early start as 185th in the GC. His best time should be an indicator for the following TT specialists: 21'03".
Hofer + 32" for a disappointing performance
Ma doing better and he's been 2 seconds faster than Stannard at the split:
new best time at the finish, with still 2 seconds advantage on Stannard!
Goddaert + 2" as provisional 3rd
Cruz + 12"
Hacecký + 10"
Mullen + 15" for a rather disappointing performance
Dennis next stage contender and despite having a disastrous tour so far, he's doing pretty well today. A couple of seconds faster than Ma at the split:
new best time at the finish, gaining further time on Ma to finish 12 seconds ahead of him!
Jallays + 8" with a super strong performance as provisional 2nd then - off the TV cameras, unfortunatelly..
Grabovski as the next TT horse aiming for the stage-win only: 3 seconds off at the split..
+ 16" at the finish - no podium finish today
Bille + 24" - he's not a GC threat anymore, though
Tennant as another serious threat for his teammate Dennis now. And indeed, he's in shape as well: 2 seconds faster than Dennis at the split:
+ 1" at the finish tough! Dennis apparently rode a super strong second sector here. Tennant provisional 2nd.
Kreuziger (GC's 42nd, + 2.09) with a chance to improve in the GC at least. He's doing fine at the split with just 5 seconds lost:
+ 2" at the finish as 3rd best so far! Gaining time on Tennant, but Dennis was stronger. Still a great ride.
Thomson (GC's 28th, + 1.29) + 27" and definitely a solid performance
Zoidl (GC's 25th, + 1.21) + 39"
Roe (GC's 21st, + 0.53) as a minor threat for Roux? He should definitely move up the GC, but his split time (+ 0.24 as 31st so far) ain't too promising:
+ 39" at the finish - certainly not, what he could have hoped for today
Reus (GC's 19th, + 0.51) next promising GC and stage contender. He won this stage back in 2014, but couldn't hold on for a high GC result. His performance today looks promising again, though: just one second off Tennant at the split and therefore a second ahead of Dennis..
+ 2" at the finish as provisional 4th behind Dennis, Tennant and Kreuziger! No podium, but amongst the very best today:
And now for the GC's Top-10, where there's no more outstanding TT rider with Roux being one of the weakest:
GC's
10th Becerra + 1'10"
09th Wyss + 55"
08th Kebede + 1'22"
07th Schoonbroodt + 1'37"
06th Monfort + 1'01" (picture above)
Wyss as the best of those five, with Monfort also doing quite solid..
05th Chaves (+ 0.32 in the GC) next and his split time ain't bad, being just 21 seconds off Tennant's best time there:
+ 49" at the finish, on the same time as Roe! A good effort..
04th Vichot (GC + 0.30) next and he's already 37 seconds off at the split.. likely to lose time on Chaves:
+ 1'22" to finish on the same time as Kebede, Kratochvila and Squire (just inside the Top-100 of the stage)
03rd Gilbert (GC + 0.22) ten seconds faster than Vichot at the split, looking solid on the first sector:
+ 1'01" to finish on the same time as Monfort
02nd vd Hugenhaben (GC + 0.15) as one of the better rated TT riders amongst the main GC contenders. He's 23rd at the split with 18 seconds lost on Tennant:
+ 43" as 30th at the finish - the best of all Top-10 riders today, 6 seconds ahead of Chaves
01st Roux the last on the road and it's all about limiting the damage somehow. He's already 46 seconds off Tennant at the first split, and so almost 30 seconds slower than Hugenhaben! A tough day for the man in yellow, who will probably lose his leader shirt:
+ 1'40" as 140th on the stage! Quite some time lost eventually, but how far will he drop in the GC?
Dennis ain't a GC threat anymore, but at least he took the stage win today. A narrow win over his teammate Tennant (1sec) and Kreuziger/Reus (2sec). Quite a good day for cycleYorkshire after some tough first two days here in their home race. A strong Jallays completes the Top-5 ahead of Ma, Stannard and Goddaert.
The GC's Top-20 after the stage now:
Reus moves up to 1st with vd Hugenhaben staying 2nd with a 5 seconds disadvantage! A huge day for Reus and his team, but the question will be, how the team will handle this 1-2 in the GC from now on. Tomorrow's the next big test already.
Chaves 3rd with just 28 seconds off the lead, Gilbert closely behind - Cuming, Marentes, Monfort, Wyss, Roux (going down to 9th) and Roe completing the Top-10 for today. Vichot dropping to 13th as the last rider being within a minute off Reus. With still some hilly stages to come, it remains a quite open battle for the GC. But today, Hugenhaben and Chaves gained valuable time on Roux.
